Computer Magic launches new video + plays Deli CMJ show at The Delancey on 10.18

Posted on:

Pixie Brooklynite Danielle Johnson – better known as Danz – began cutting music little over a year ago under the moniker Computer Magic, but has already garnered some encouraging write ups, an enthusiastic fan base and a sturdy collection of tracks, all of which she’s made freely available online. Despite not charging for her music, the 21 year old’s vintage synth pop style already sounds fully formed. The arrangements bounce along efficiently, with Danz’s gentle voice cooing out the sweet melodies with candid optimism. In fact, there’s not yet a dud among her growing portfolio, which could easily fill a double album. A DJ, graphic designer and blogger to boot, you get the sense that this super-gifted Hunter College kid can do whatever she puts her mind to. Check out this new video and come to see her live at The Deli’s CMJ electronic stage at The Delancey on Tuesday October 18 with Psychobuildings, Pretty Good Dance Moves, Caged Animals and other awesome NYC electronic artists. – Dean Van Nguyen

Get your dream on at DBA on 10.06: DIVE, Spanish Prisoners, Caged Animals and Quiet Lights

Posted on:

Not be outdone by his drummer Tommy Gardner’s own awesome EP as Crush, Beach Fossils guitarist Cole Smith’s new band DIVE is an even more washy and atmospheric group than anything the Fossils have given us yet. Dive’s new single ‘Sometime’ is as catchy as it is haunting. Complete with moody guitars that only hit one string at a time, it’s Beach Fossils on a rainy afternoon. The song will be released as a single October 7 on Captured Tracks. They’ll be playing one of their first shows at Death By Audio next month, supporting Spanish Prisoners at the CD release party for their dreamy self-released full-length Gold Fools. See the show next Thursday October 6 with Caged Animals and Quiet Lights and look out for Dive’s EP to follow this December. – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

New Performance Video: “3 Track Session” (Bowlegs) – The War on Drugs & Winter Tour Dates

Posted on:

We already mentioned that The War on Drugs will be out on the road with local pals Purling Hiss and the band Tulsa’s Carter Tanton. Well, it looks like they’ll be extending their tour without their mates which will include a two-night run in NYC at the Bowery Ballroom (our favorite NYC music venue) and the legendary Beacon Theatre with The National. They’ll be ending their extended road trip in Philly on December 12 at Union Transfer. (You can check out the rest of the winter tour dates via Pitchfork.) If you are having trouble waiting that long for your fix, below is a recent session that they recorded with Bowlegs music blog which includes performances of “Your Love is Calling My Name,” “The Animator,” and “Come to the City”. The band was nearly two hours late for their session because of heavy traffic and soundcheck for that evening’s show was drawing near so they only had one chance to lay it down, but that is all it took.  Enjoy!

SoundLand – The Black Belles, Those Darlins, JEFF, 9/24/11

Posted on:

There was a lot of rocking girly action going on late in the evening at the Neuhoff Factory Party Stage on Saturday. The Black Belles, Those Darlins and JEFF the Brotherhood were among those who closed the night, and SoundLand, with three killer sets on a secluded hill near 1st.

After seeing this dark quartet play, November seems like a long time to wait for The Black Belles’ self-titled debut, though we were repeatedly reminded that we could purchase their 7” in the “big yellow truck” from Third Man Records parked near the stage. These gothy fledglings, who’ve been taken under Jack White’s wing, are like four Elviras covering The White Stripes – they’ve got the same gritty guitar and spare thunderous drums of the late duo, adding in their own foreboding bass and vampire-ish keys.

Those Darlins know how to get an audience high – using some combination of white-trashed-out cowpunk, bits of ’60s and ’80s pop, backwoods vocal twang, imperfectly skilled musicianship, a genuine interest in the audience, and miles and miles of enthusiasm. In a flashy gold sequined one-piece, kinda-frontlady Jessi Darlin (all three ladies and gent share vocals) tramped around the stage, abusing her guitar and staring wide-eyed into the faces of the crowd in the entrancing “Mystic Mind” from Screws Get Loose. The set included the title track as well as others from their sophomore record like “Waste Away,” “Fatty Needs A Fix” and “Be Your Bro.”

The catching favorite “Red Light Love” from their debut weaseled in also, along with a revving new song “Burn Me Up” and some sexy “Shakin” delivered by Nikki. Two free 7”s made their way into fans’ hands that night; one made an aerial landing from Jessi’s hand into the crowd, and the other, she announced, would be given to whomever acted the craziest through the following song (it turned out to be a guy dancing on the shoulders of his buddy with arms outstretched). All were down-to-earth, charismatic and incredibly into their performance.

When JEFF went on to wrap up the night, the usual pushing, shoving, stage diving and beer sloshing ensued among the typical assortment of JEFF fans – a delightfully diverse mix of hipsters, bros and older, average dudes. It could have a lot to do with the atmosphere, but there just isn’t a bad JEFF song. They pulled from Heavy Days and We Are The Champions – neither record has become worn – and whipped out a prolonged new number that featured an awesome drum solo from Jamin. Part Two happened at the after party. – Jessica Pace

Saving you a whole bunch in plane tickets to Paris, you can just make the quick venture over to the venue to see some of the hottest French acts of Today. Thursday night will include an exclusive music entitled "Nouvelle Vague performs Dawn of Innocence" performed by Nouvelle Vague and directed by Jean Charles de Castelbac. Also on the roster is Hugh Coltman, an English folk singer who has gained much popularity in France. Friday features popular band Tinariwen and Moroccan folk singer Hindi Zahra. Saturday rings in October with a bang of electronic proportions. Bring your dance shoes over to the El Rey and jam out to the sounds of Chateau Marmont, Feadz, DJ Cam and Birdy Nam Nam. Bringing their own style of European dance music, they’re all sure to provide us with a good night. The event itself is sponsored by the Consulate General of France and Cultural Services of the French Embassy of LA, so it’s legit. Grab your buddies and come out to at least one night, if not all three! Tickets are $30 on Thursday and Friday and $25 on Saturday. Save a little extra and buy a 3-day pass for $75. À bientôt!

Recap and Photos: POPPED! Fest

Posted on:

POPPED! Fest came back once again for another year. Unfortunately, with the change in venue from FDR Park to Temple’s Liacouras Center and the elimination of stages, bands, comedy acts, and food trucks from the original promise for the festival, you can’t be blamed for feeling a bit underwhelmed by the whole experience, but there were definitely standout moments throughout the weekend. However, most of them came on the second day. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. was an act on the first day that really captured our attention. We are looking forward to seeing more of them.

Saturday was stacked with most of the acts that we were excited about seeing. The sound and light system also got a boost from the first day which might have been due to Pretty Lights traveling setup. Cults provided an enjoyable set after a quick much-needed adjustment to the system for Madeline Follin’s vocals. Hometown boys Sun Airway’s sound transferred quite nicely to the big stage proving that they deserve to be part of bigger tours and festivals in the near future. Charles Bradley sang with the heart of a warrior defying time and the cruel world of the music biz (now, if only someone would take Sly out of the van that he is currently living in and get him back in the studio or on stage). Titus Andronicus was a whole other beast when they took the stage, and really showed why they have received so much buzz. (BTW: Amy Klein fuckin’ rocks! We felt a little guilty inside about how turned on we were getting while she performed.) It was an honor to experience the performance by legendary rapper Rakim. Though we could have gone without the crowd participation that a lot of emcees go for during their sets and what felt really awkward when Rakim refused to perform and just have his deejay scratch until they fixed the sound to his liking, but we have never experienced what it is like to perform in front of thousands of people when you can’t hear the music so that’s OK. What wasn’t acceptable was the gentleman who ran all over the stage like a madman in the middle Rakim’s performance to cut his final tune short. That was really rather lame and a buzzkill. We guess that he wasn’t a fan of hip hop. Kreayshawn was really nice in the media room, but honestly, WTF!?! Not a very good idea to have her come after a hip hop legend. (And was that Arthur Kade who kept reiterating to us in the media room about how we were missing out on her genius?) Foster the People was one of the first acts that we felt really captivated the whole audience. Though we weren’t fans of their vocals, there performance was tight, and their sound was huge! For those who recently caught them at Kung Fu Necktie, you were very fortunate. We don’t think that you’ll find them on a stage that small for a long time if ever again. After the truly tired A.D.D. pop mash-ups of Girl Talk, Pretty Lights delivered the throw down dance party that most of the day was setup to do. There you have it. Those were our highlights from this year’s POPPED! Fest. We also do have some KILLER photos to share with you HERE. Enjoy! (Photos by David Turcotte)
