Boots Electric puns the movies with salacious new video

Posted on:

Better known as the frontman of Eagles of Death Metal, Jesse “The Devil” Hughes is now hosting his own raunchy party under his own moniker, Boots Electric. What doesn’t change about this testosterone-fueled frolic is a straight on desire to deliver pure, unadulterated fun without taking itself too seriously. The video for “Boots Electric Theme” is crammed with all kinds of excesses – more film references than a quick Netflix browse, heaps of comedic sexual innuendo and, last but not least, a bad ass mustache. Honkey Kong, his first solo output, will be released via Dangerbird Records on September 20th.

Photo Recap: WHYY Connections Fest

Posted on:

Mayor Michael A. Nutter welcomed the WHYY Connections Festival as an annual occurrence midway through the event’s debut run. The festival housed a copious amount of well-respected artists, including hometown favorites Dr. Dog with their eclectic ‘60s pop-rock vibe closing out Saturday night. Other acts included Texas country rocker and son of Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, who supplied a suiting set of blues and country, The Baseball Project with its anecdotal rock about America’s pastime, Philly’s own Kuf Knotz providing his positive rhymes and beats with aesthetically pleasing instrumentation, easy-listening folk songstress Birdie Busch, Toy Soldiers with their vintage rock ‘n’ roll-inspired energy, and the synchronized Japanese-influenced drumming by Kyo Daiko. In-between the featured artists included special appearances by First Person Arts’ Story Slam Champion R. Eric Thomas and Community Rocks! organization leader Sara O’Brien and her girls. You can check out our photos from the WHYY Connections showcase that helped to bond Philly’s community for the day HERE.

Mercury Radio Theater Record Release Show at JB’s Sept. 3

Posted on:

For some reason, it’s not weird to start the first weekend of September off with geezer werewolves, guns, and zombies. Well, at least, not where Mercury Radio Theater is concerned. The Philly trio, whose music can be best described as a ’50s sci-fi flick turned ravenous, will take over Johnny Brenda’s tonight for their Kilroy record release show. The third episode in their "Monster Trilogy," Kilroy tells the story of a "geriatric werewolf, an old-folks home and a handgun" in blasts of geeked-out rampageous rockabilly, jazz-punk and prog-infused instrumentals. And if you’ve followed Mercury Radio Theater’s career over the past few years, you know that their album release shindig will be anything but mediocre–in addition to playing Kilroy, the band plans on scooping up former MRT members to play their "lost episode," "Manhattan Zombie Massacre," while Miss Rose provides some sultry burlesque between all the madness. mewithoutYou‘s Greg Jehanian and his side project, Geology, will also add their sound to the foray. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia

Weekly Feature: American Darlings

Posted on:

American Darlings comprised of Jason Maksymilian (guitars, vocals), John Alexander (bass), and Daniel Vincent (drums), produce delightful garage rock that can be found on their two EP’s, aptly titled “American Darlings EP” and “American Darlings Second EP.” On their first, “Kimchee Princess” radiates feel-good vibes with cheerful modulations, while “Bender” is a waltzing love song, and “Divide” channels a grungier edge. “Million” begins American Darlings’ second EP with a weighty guitar jam which transitions quickly to a coasting jingle. “Stella’s” happy-go-lucky hi-hat ticks and romantic choruses change directions with the tenser and more somber melodies of EP-ender, “Replace.” American Darlings demonstrate that upbeat has many dimensions. – read Meijin Bruttomesso’s Q&A with the band here.

X-Ray Eyeballs open for The Black Lips in October + play Death By Audio on 09.02 (tonight)

Posted on:

The garage rock inspired, in-your-face pounding X-Ray Eyeball recently opened up for Cat Power at Webster Hall and is scheduled to warm up the stage for The Black Lips at the end of October. To top it off, their 7” hit “Sundae” was just made available for fans through the Seattle based independent label Hardly Art. The group holds a timeless rock feel mixed with a tendency to apply distortion to anything that makes a sound. Also, their leather jackets and "don’t mess with me" attitude are proven winners in this mad rock’n’roll world. You can catch their newest line-up consisting of Lizzah Lohse (guitar/keys), Carly Rabalais (bass/vocals), O.J. San Felipe (guitar/vocals) and Sarah Baldwin (drums) on September 2 (tonight) at Death By Audio in Williamsburg. – Kristen Ferreira

NYC Alt Rap on Monday at Mercury: Deathrow Tull and New World Side Order

Posted on:

On Labor Day NYC Hip Hop lovers who will be staying in town may want to head to the Mercury Lounge to check out two local acts who are trying to redefine the sound of Hip Hop. Deatthrow Tull (video below) mixes beats and rap rhymes with a indie/electro musical sensibility, and has recently also performed as an acoustic band – a concept quite foreign to the Hip Hop genre (see video here). The guys in New World Side Order (in the picture, getting ready for Irene) definitely like to experiment with their samples, with a preference for dark/bordering apocalyptic atmospheres – a perfect backdrop to their politically charged lyrics. Aceyalone and Riddlore and MC Homeless will round up the bill.
