Album Stream: Girls’ ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’

Posted on:

Proof that Oakland’s ‘Pill Hill‘ has produced more than crime and addiction, Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White of Girls found the perfect mixture to create new album Father, Son, Holy Ghost, out Sept. 13 and available here for streaming.

Fans who fell in love with the stoned California pop of Girls’ 2009 debut Album will immediately recognize the duo’s maturity and range in Father, Son, Holy Ghost

It’s not about one song or a singular theme, although the album successfully tackles love in all its forms, but truly this is an album. Listen to it start-to-finish and drown in Owen’s sorrowful gospel voice, memorize lyrics that rival a Raymond Carver short story and delight in the fact that someone is still making albums this interesting.

Baby Barnyard — Home Recordings

Posted on:

By the time I was done listening to Baby Barnyard’s 6-track compilation, Home Recordings, I was upset with myself. I was unable to recall many specific moments, not because it is stark, but rather it was so easy for me to get lost in thought, which I guess is the purpose of the genre “dream-pop.” However, upon second listen, I prepared myself and fought the urge to drift off to god knows where and listen closely. What was initially an endless pool of ambient layers started to sound like what it really is: a beautiful and floating concoction of slow, moody guitars with distant, sweeping vocals.

Baby Barnyard, the project of singer and songwriter Amanda Freeman, weaves in and out of dream-like trances seamlessly. The album starts with the track Uncertain Principle. The warmth of Amanda’s vocals panning from side to side sends chills down my spine as the guitars scratch and flutter. But just as your eyelids will begin to weigh down, the bittersweet third track Cloudy chimes in as Amanda begins with the hook, “down, up, down, up, up, down, up.” The minimalist song structure is reminiscent of the band Atlas Sound combining a beautiful and catchy vocal melody with simple acoustic guitar and synth, paradoxically instilling feelings of unconditional nostalgia and anticipation.

The album of home recordings is sure to be a great starting point for the talented musician. It will definitely stick with me after my initial lapse in focus. At times catchy, at times captivating, and always flowing. However, my one criticism, no matter how well it flows and grabs you, there feels like there is just a little something missing making it great. Then again, these are just home recordings, so, with that said, I’m more than excited to see her next step and if that next step will make room for Baby Barnyard to grab hold of the monopoly bands such as Beach House and Deerhunter hold on the genre.

Univox 7” Release Party at KFN Sept. 7

Posted on:

Incendiary art rockers Univox are celebrating their new self-released 7” Tonight with a FREE show at Kung Fu Necktie. I really can’t get enough of the band’s truly unique songs with their vocal harmonies sculpting epic tales filled with anthemic pop hooks that simply make me uncontrollably wail out lyrics as I ferociously jump up and down pumping my fist (and that’s just alone in my room). Univox will be joined by sinister post-punk outfit The Bad Doctors (whose Luke Nally created a club party-starter with his “Tonight” remix) and emo rockers Everyone Everywhere. Hopefully the Crystal Visions crew will give Nally’s version a spin tonight during their after-party when they unload a blend of 60s/70s psych rock on the crowd. You can check out the A- & B-sides of the 7” below to get your vocals and fist-pumping warmed up. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, FREE, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Future of Bookspace as a Music Venue Pending

Posted on:

Sorry folks for the website being down yesterday so we have a little catching up to do today. First off, we started seeing the rumors about the beloved Bookspace possibly being shutdown at the end of last week in the Twitter Universe as well as speculations from Philebrity and The A.V. Club Philly surfacing yesterday. Well, below is an update from The A.V. Club Philly that they received from Bookspace co-owner Ben Orlick.

Not shutdown completely– as of now the bookstore remains open our normal hours.  We have temporarily stopped hosting shows for now as we await further details from the city–we haven’t gotten any paperwork from them yet, so it’s hard to elaborate much at this point, but we’ll definitely be taking care of whatever is necessary to resume other activities.  I’ll keep you posted in the next couple days as the details evolve.

Obviously, we hope for the best for the space and its kind peeps who help keep it going. In the meantime, swing on by and purchase some items to show your support. (Photo by David Turcotte)

Experimental NYC: Joey Molinaro @ Lit Lounge (09.26) and Don Pedro’s (09.29)

Posted on:

We’re live from Joe Franklin’s office where there’s nowhere to sit because the office is rupturing.  I’m invited to partake in some boxed wine.  There’s 4 of us here with instruments and we don’t know each other apart from Jeff Young. We improvise, a woman from the Times Square Observer says we’d be perfect for the Upright Citizens Brigade.  Nervously, the Japanese businessman starts singing There’s a Hero.  A Pimp and his Ho drop by unexpected and record a segment about a boa constrictor vomiting pinkies.  Joe Franklin falls asleep.  A mystery man interrupts with anecdotes about pastrami. I got this video out of it.  I also met Joey Molinaro.

Joey plays acoustic grindcore violin with foot percussion.  At this point history fails to account for the modern ways of attraction.  Basically, I can’t imagine anyone not liking this. In the grindcore violin world, Shamans frequent hardcore shows.  Classical nerds don’t realize their punch is spiked with rotgut til they’re moshing and have lost their reeds. Perhaps the most beautiful part of this thrash violin business though – it creates new potential for dissonance.  Just when you thought sonority collapsed into a single drone loud enough to annihilate any thought you had as a child – low and behold, this Joey fellow appears and plays a single chord, 3 or 4 notes that clash like a mole-parrot.
Transfixed, you remember the simple delight of placing things together, forgetting you’ve forgotten you are more than the nullification of all noise. – Valerie Kuhene

September Album of the Month: Deleted Scenes “Young People’s Church of the Air”

Posted on:

DC’s Deleted Scenes have unleashed their sophomore LP Young People’s Church of the Air this month and it’s probably the coolest album to come out in years that equally balances spacing out with head bobbing. Oh yes, Daniel Scheuerman (guitar, vocals), Matt Dowling (bass, keyboard), Dominic Campanaro (guitar, keyboards, samples), and Brian Hospital (drums) are on to something, and each track on this showcases it’s own concoction of genre morphing and a blend of home vs studio recording.

Some fav’s include the first single "Bedbedbedbedbed." It’s insanely infectious with a dreamy soundscape, wrapping your eardrums in a comforter of warm noise while Scheuerman pleads on for that immaculate girl to crawl into his bed bed bed… hot! Keys warble, drums are dope tight, guitars lush out, and gorgeousness ensues.

"Baltika 9" is a super fun surfer romp tinged with some Brian Wilson inspiration that’ll get you "drunk enough for second base." A falsetto chorus soars above a rambunctious beat making it feel like summer isn’t going away anytime soon.

And "English as a Second Language" gets goofy-fun and hits all levels of the music spectrum, drawing you in with it’s happy pop friendly bass lines, electro beat, and fuzzy vocals, before busting into a punk outburst and melting into 80’s new wave territory. Totally awesome!

Young People’s Church of the Air is now available on iTunes, featuring the single "Bedbedbedbedbed" heard in the music video below. They are currently on tour throughout the US and Canada, and will be at DC9 on Oct.9! –Dawn
