Five Years of Music at Johnny Brenda’s This September!

Posted on:

This September marks the five year anniversary of Johnny Brenda’s as a music venue. To celebrate, the good folks at JB’s will be presenting special concerts every Friday and Saturday evening beginning Friday, September 16 through Saturday, October 1. There will be local acts like Work Drugs, Purples (members of the Teeth), White Birds, Meg Baird, Watery Love, Blood Feathers, Like a Fox and Dry Feet as well as acclaimed touring bands, such as Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (two shows – which also includes a rare All Ages Matinee on Sept. 24), J. Viewz, Jenny Owens Young and Home Blitz as part of the festivities. Come out and celebrate how JB’s has changed the landscape of the Philly music scene over the last five years (and hopefully many more to come)!

Y Luv rocks the Roxy on September 13th

Posted on:

While most of are replacing our brightly colored shorts, sandals and shades for scarves, socks and sweaters to prepare for fall’s inevitable reign, Y Luv’s music is forcing us to stay in summer mode. So, you may want to at least unpack those shades on September 13th, if you plan on going to The Roxy to catch the LA-based indie rockers perform tracks from their EP “How Chill Can You Let Go.” Midnight Mirage and Lucy Walsh are also set to perform for the evening. – Nicole Dawley

Brooklyn’s Escort release full-length debut this November

Posted on:

It seems almost unreal that a band as successful as NYC’s Escort is just about to release their debut full length. The 17 piece "disco-orchestra" has been around since 2006, and since then their music has been a constant presence in the country’s dancefloors through a seemingly endless stream of remixed versions of their songs. Escort’s long-awaited debut LP is finally set for release this November, and here’s a taste of it – the single "Cocaine Blues".

Archer Spade Pushing Boundaries at Highwire Gallery Sept. 8

Posted on:

Archer Spade is an unlikely duo compromised of Philly music veterans, world-reknowned klezmer trombonists Daniel Blacksberg and demon shredder Nick Millevoi. The combination has previously performed in seemingly every possible genre ranging from rock to jazz to chamber-pop and traditional Jewish music, as well as in Deli fave the Hassidic punk band Electric Simcha. They’re latest project creates a unique blend of their previous musical endeavors as they push the boundaries of their expansive musical knowledge and abilities. Also on the bill are Swedish born multi-instrumentalist Helena Espvall (Espers) and Brooklyn experimental/improv group, Mary Halvorson/Weasel Walter/Peter Evans Trio. Highwire Gallery 2040 Frankford Ave., $6, 7:30 pm, All AgesDan Brightcliffe

We featured Brooklyn based Robin Bacior‘s pretty video/song combo in this blog back in February, and since then the 24 year old singer songwriter has obviously been busy recording new material and making plans. Robin has just released as a free download the single "Ohio" (streaming here) from the upcoming album "Rest Our Wings" – to be released in November – and is kicking off a west coast tour tonight at Hotel Cafe` in LA. Tetsuo, Parachute Musical record releases, 9/10

Posted on:

It’s a month for record releases – new LPs from Diarrhea Planet and Modoc are coming up in the next few weeks. But this Saturday there are two release parties happening that are worth your dollars. Tetsuo’s celebrating Inmates, the follow-up to These Crystals Don’t Burn, at The Springwater (stream it now here), which should be quite a noisy affair with The Black Shades and The 1-10s. And across the river Parachute Musical indie-rocks The 5 Spot in honor of Kill It Cut It Down with Eastern Block. Both 9 p.m.

Electronica from the West Coast: Slidecamp

Posted on:

Comprised of Boreta of LA’s The Glitch Mob and San Francisco-based Comma, Slidecamp worked on their instrumental electronic debut for over five years, recording it in cars, bedrooms, re-purposed office buildings, and back-alley studios spanning from Los Angeles to remote Washington State. Subtle field recordings, 4-track sessions, synthesizer experiments and found sounds are combined to form songs that take on a life of their own. Their self-titled album is out now.
