Weekly Feature: Ravens & Chimes – live at Pianos on August 17

Posted on:

Ravens & Chimes emerged as the winner of last year’s Best of NYC Emerging Artists readers’ poll. There’s no mystery why the talented quintet is considered New York’s answer to 2011’s big Grammy winner, Arcade Fire. The spirited vocals and baroque instrumentation are comparable to the band’s Canadian counterpart, but Ravens & Chimes don’t need the coordinated outfits and an expansive troupe of musicians to grab people’s attention. Even the band’s most subtle songs are as enthralling as their more ornate tunes. – See Ravens & Chimes live at Pianos on August 17, opening for Sherlocks’ Daughter, read Nancy Chow’s interview with the band here.

Making Portland Proud

Posted on:

Typhoon just swept us all away, yet again – and this time with the rest of late night television. I think Portland was beaming so brightly last night that you could see us from space. I bet there isn’t a person who watched their debut on David Letterman last night who can’t wait for them to get home. Yes, yes, they have to finish their tour, Lollapalooza, blah, blah, etc. Just come home already, Typhoon.

Final Making Time of the Summer w/Cold Cave at Voyeur Aug. 5

Posted on:

The Dark Wave revival is upon us. Revamped by pioneers like Give Up the Ghost’s former front man Wesley Eisold, the synth drenched hums of Eisold’s latest act, Cold Cave, renders summer nights decadently retro with a hint a gloom. With the recent release of Cold Cave’s second LP Cherish the Light Years via Matador, Eisold’s moody lyricism brings to mind Ian Curtis’ diction, Depeche Mode’s New Wave genius, and Bauhaus’ ultra-goth element of cool. From the cheerful buzz of “Life Magazine” to the pulsating glitz of “Confetti,” Cold Cave’s appeal lies partially on Eisold’s knack for crafting seductively dark backbeats you can feel and won’t forget. Premised by flawless octaves and provocative chants by Austra, tonight’s final installment of Making Time for the summer is slated to be epically rad. Check out the promo video below by Klip Collective! Voyuer, 1221 St. James St., 9pm, $12 adv/$15 door, 21+ (Photo by Jon Klemm) – Dianca Potts

Anthony Green Show SOLD OUT at KFN Aug. 5

Posted on:

Kung Fu Necktie will be hosting a listening party tonight for My Brother’s Ears/MySister’s Eyes from Circa Survive‘s Colin Frangicetto’s solo project, Psychic Babble. There will also be a very special intimate performance by Frangicetto’s Circa Survive bandmate Anthony Green. You’ll be treated to material from his debut solo album Avalon, which was recorded last March in just eight days by Green and some friends at his fiancé’s parents’ house in the family-friendly beach town of Avalon, New Jersey. “We had a short timeline [to record this album] and that’s the way I used to work back in the day; you’d only have three days in the studio so you had to plan out everything and then just go for it,” Green explains. “I’ve been wanting to record these songs for the past two years and this was the perfect time and place to make it happen.” He’ll also be supported this evening by The End of America. Unfortunately, if you don’t have tickets already, this show is way SOLD OUT. So I guess for hardcore Circa Survive/Anthony Green fans it’s time to get creative. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 8pm, SOLD OUT, 21+ – Alexis V.

NewVillager land on NY Mag Approval Matrix + tour with Metronomy

Posted on:

NewVillager got a fair amount of love from The Deli and it’s great to see them progress in their "chase for (indie) stardom." The band was just featured in New York Magazine’s ‘Approval Matrix‘ grid as both "brilliant" and "high brow". And "high brow" can’t really be a bad thing from the friggin’ Highest Brow publication out there! The band, who has recently released this video of the song ‘ShotBigHorixon’, is about to head out on tour with Metronomy. New album coming out on August 16.

More NYC “mellowness”: Little Anchor announce “Yellow Lights” EP release

Posted on:

I don’t know if it’s just me getting old or what (the heat, maybe?), but these days I have the feeling that most of the quality music curently produced by NYC artists is in the range between "mid tempo" and down right "mellow". Brooklyn-based four-piece Little Anchor position themselves in the latter category, blending the storytelling and simplicity of the Northwest (home of front-lady Alexa  Cabellon) with New York influenced pop sensibility. They do so in a very compelling and delicate way. They will digitally release the Yellow Lights EP on September 6, 2011.
