The Remains @ The Basement, 8/10/11

Posted on:

We know you’ve been planning on it, but if not, consider this a last reminder from us to get yer asses over to The Basement tomorrow night to catch The Remains. You know, that band dubbed “garage heroes” by The Guardian, that kicked all sorts of ass and opened for The Beatles’ US tour in ’66 then kinda dropped off the map. Those Remains. $10 at 9.

NYC CD Submission roundup: Paul Jefferson, Elephant Goes West, Conveyor

Posted on:

Here at The Deli NYC we receive hundreds of CD submissions per month through this link. Here are some highlights from the latest batch.

Red headed songwriter Paul Jefferson (picture above), who recently released the two song single "Comrades", plays intriguing, dreamy alt folk that will please fans of Grizzly Bear and Beach House. The single is well produced, and Paul’s vocals have a fragile and appealing quality.

NJ based Elephant Goes West specialize in melodic rootsy pop with some circus-y influences reminiscent of The Beatles from their late 60s period. This is the kind of music you may want to listen to during recession times: good, melodic songs with fun arrangements. These guys have two upcoming shows in NYC, see here for dates.

Pictureless Brooklyn band Conveyor, who will be celebrating the CD release of the "Sun Ray" EP at Pianos on September 2, mixes all sorts of melodic psych rock influences from Grandaddy to Flaming Lips and Waters-era Pink Floyd, adding a personal intimate element to it. The result is a sleepingly pleasing psychedelia with electronic and math accents.

Video Footage from Dock Street Music Festival

Posted on:

Below is video footage from this year’s Dock Street Music Festival that celebrated the end of Philly Beer Week, which was filmed by Drink Philly’s Inside Brew. We were happy to be asked by our favorite West Philly bar/restaurant to help present the event with special guests Bardo Pond, TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb, Da Comrade!, and Citywide Specials. It was the best turnout for the fest so far – good times, fine beers, tasty pizza, and great music! Looking forward to next year. Cheers! (Photo by Brandee Nichols)

Heavy Medical & Bubonic Bear Show Moved from The After School Special to Black Actor House Aug. 9

Posted on:

Heavy Medical and Bubonic Bear have been known to frequent the basement scene adding headbanging sets to every bill. Today they’ll be playing off each other at Black Actor House (show moved from The After School Special), which will be an early show. Philly smudge two-piece Bubonic Bear are polished members of the Philly house show scene with drummer Dustin Khebzou as a resident and booker at The Olive Garden. The duo remains steadily involved in national touring and was even featured in this past year’s Two Piece Fest. Noise duo Heavy Medical (formerly of Nervous Sex) will tear through audiences with their bludgeoning reverb and feedback. These two acts are sure to melt some faces this evening with their aggressive ear piercing vocals and thick bass beats. (BTW: Bubonic Bear will also be performing this Thursday at the benefit show for sludge metal band Sadgiqacea “because they got their gear stolen and it fucking sucks.”) Black Actor House, (Please contact one of the acts for more details.), 6pm, Donation, All Ages – Emma Branson

Zambri signs to Kanine Records + plays SummerScreen @ McCarren Park

Posted on:

NYC’s dual art-pop sisterhood Zambri just announced that they signed to Kanine Records. These young ladies have been working on this for quite some time – I personally met them in 2003 (I think), when they were talented teens looking for a producer – that’s what my job was at the time. Their signing to one of the most successful new NYC indie labels is a testament to how far you can go when you have talent and determination – and also to how long that may take. For a first introduction into the world of Cristi Jo & Jessica Zambri, Kanine Records will be releasing Zambri’s debut EP Glossolalia on November 8, 2011. You can see them live at Glasslands on August 18th and at SummerScreen @ McCarren Park on August 24.
