Interview with Bravenoise: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (August)

Posted on:

The Baltimore/DC/Italy hybrid band that is Bravenoise have been voted your Band of the Month for August, and we were wondering what made these guys bring their rock to a "make it funky!" level! So we riled together the dudes behind the noise, Andrew Bell, Andrea Spadafora, and Garron Marsh, to find out. Here they spill it on the awesomeness of girlfriends, Craigslist, and good Italian espresso. On to the interview…

Bravenoise’s debut Everything Was and Everything Will Be is available now on iTunes. Check out the songs live at several upcoming shows, including Stan & Joe’s Saloon on 8/20, and The Whiskey (Annapolis) on 8/27. More dates…  ((Photog: Meredith D. Lee)

Go beyond with PeRPLeXa

Posted on:

Don’t get put off by the atypical capitalization of the band’s name. Take it as a heads-up to the type of music you’re about to hear. PeRPLeXa is a band of a previous era that still finds its way into relevance in the current one. Taking cues from the psychedelic greats of the past, this band has a firm grasp on the abstract. The lineup features performances from members of other bands in the same vein such as bassist Chris Camacho of Forest for the Trees and William B. Carruthers of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. Founding member Jonathan Wald has now managed to put together a new album, Gone Beyond, the first in a little over a decade. It’s a vast, swirling soundscape that is just waiting to be explored. If you care to get lost for a little while in a place unfamiliar but inviting, check it out here. – Taylor Lampela

NYC/CT artists on the rise: The Stepkids play free show at Mercury on 08.18 (tonight)

Posted on:

The Stepkids are a NYC/Connecticut based trio that plays an interesting blend of groovy psych-lounge in indie/DIY sauce. The soulful vocals and psychedelic keyboard and guitar flourishes add extra complexity and depth to the sound – one of the most refreshing we stumbled upon recently. Check out their songs, on their Myspace profile, they are all noteworthy. And if you don’t have anything going on tonight, you can see them at The Mercury Lounge as part of Spotify’s Late Nights, with another Deli favorite: Delicate Steve.

The War on Drugs Record Release Party at JB’s Aug. 18

Posted on:

By now, you should already know that The War on Drugs is having their Record Release Party tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. But just in case for some reason that you’ve been disconnected from the internet and the outside world, I didn’t want you to miss out on what is going to be a fantastic evening of musicianship. I cannot express enough how much I’ve been enjoying the classic feeling yet forward thinking Slave Ambient. The album might have been a long excruciating wait, but you had to know that mastermind Adam Granduciel would never release anything until he felt it was ready. Well, he was finally ready. Now let’s see if the rest of the world is. (You can read about his meticulous recording process and more in our recent interview with Granduciel HERE.) The War on Drugs will be joined by pal Kiel Everett (bassist for Purling Hiss) whose side project Tin Horses should be a perfect compliment to the evening. Their debut album American Radiance is definitely one worth listening to over and over again (our review of it is available HERE). The local acts will also be hosting Caveman whose iridescent self-released full-length CoCo Beware helped earn them the cover of our latest edition of The Deli Magazine’s NYC print (which you can take a gander at online HERE) as well as accolades from major media outlets like Pitchfork, Fader and The New York Times. BTW: Yes, that’s a lot of Deli links that you need to check out, but at least, you’ll learn why this evening is not to be missed! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Check out the achingly beautiful Daytrotter Session from Des Ark. You may have recently seen their name on The Deli site and taken a listen to their music when they were nominated in our Featured Artist(s) Poll about over a month back. Led by Durham, NC transplant Aimee Argote, you’ll find how the power of music can truly save lives. Just read the inspirational story from the intro of an article about what helped end Argote’s dispute with her father regarding choosing making music as her career HERE or swing by Daytrotter and feel it for yourself. She’ll also be performing solo at Daytrotter’s Barnstormer 5 on Saturday, August 27 when the tour stops in Brooklyn. But until then, go download her session HERE. Enjoy! The 50th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival Kicks Off Tonight

Posted on:

People should already be making their way to the 40-acre location at Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township (near Schwenksville, PA) for the Philadelphia Folk Festival’s 50th Anniversary presented by the non-profit Philadelphia Folksong Society in conjunction with Point Entertainment. The four-day music and art festival will be kicking things off with an exclusive concert tonight for attendees with camping tickets featuring Terrance Simien and The Zydeco Experience, Amanda Shires, and Joel Plaskett Emergency. For the rest of the folks who aren’t planning to build a home this weekend as part of the makeshift town, the music will begin tomorrow morning. You’ll be treated to local favorites like Hoots & Hellmouth and Birdie Busch intertwined among legends like Arlo Guthrie and Levon Helm as well as up-and-comers like Justin Townes Earle and Trombone Shorty. It’s simply a chill weekend to get away from the grittiness of city life. Hopefully the predicted thunderstorms will hold off avoiding putting a damper on things, but I’m sure that it won’t keep the alcohol from flowing. Old Pool Farm, Upper Salford Township, Thurs. – Sun., $10 – $188, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Creepoid and Arches Journey Along a Psychedelic Spectrum at KFN Aug. 18

Posted on:

Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie features two premier local acts Creepoid and Arches, as well as Grand Rapids, MI’s Shores and Richmond, VA’s the Diamond Center. Creepoid’s mix of dreamy psychedelic folk and aggressive grudge sounds have made them one of the most buzz-worthy bands in the city, and their live show does not disappoint. I have personally witnessed the aftermath of destruction left on stage by their intense live performance. On the other side of the dream pop psychedelic spectrum is Arches. The group’s sound has been compared to the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys, and the lush orchestral arrangements of Grizzly Bear, but still remains rooted in guitar-based indie rock. The evening is hosted by Phonographic Arts (whose booking is currently run by Creepoid’s drummer Pat Troxell so get in touch if you are interested in performing at one of their showcases). Be sure to head on over to KFN for an intense musical journey. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Frankford Ave.,$8, 7:30 pm, 21+ (Creepoid Photo by Michael James Murray; Arches Photo by Anne Murphy) – Dan Brightcliffe
