Last Minute Plans : Midnight Moxie @ Phyllis’ Musical Inn

Posted on:

The lovely trio Midnight Moxie will be celebrating the release release of their debut album Don’t Stop tonight (7/29) at Phyllis’ Musical Inn (1800 W. Division St.). The cover is just $5, and you won’t be disappointment. What I love about these three is their honest love of music and their genuine excitement about their debut album. They will be performing the entire album.

To get you excited, check out their performance on Living Room Songs from back in May.

Death Ships @ Schubas

Posted on:

The new album from Death Ships, Circumstantial Chemistry, is filled with synth-driven pop songs, but also brings a heavy dose of rock. The four member band brings a full and rich keyboard sound with horns, and on the album they brought in a lot of extra sounds and musicians.

The band has been together since 2001, and this album may be their best yet. They released an ep last year, but this is their first full-length since 2006’s Seeds of Destruction.

Death Ships will be celebrating the release of Circumstantial Chemistry at Schubas on 7/30 with Like Pioneers and Blasted Diplomats.

Hermit Thrushes, Scott Churchman, and Friends Weird Out at Bookspace July 29

Posted on:

Though the much-beloved DIY space the OX has never made the come back that we had hoped would happen and currently appears to be nearing its final days, its residents and former residents are still helping to shape the local art community for the better. One of the last remaining original inhabitants, Greg Johnson, was approached to host a lineup that he couldn’t pass up at Bookspace. Tonight’s bill will be anchored by the frenetic avant-folk sounds of Hermit Thrushes (you can check out and download their Daytrotter Session that was posted this past March HERE) and the dark ghostly folk of Scott Churchman (who should have a new album coming out in the near the future). Imported for the evening are Baltimore’s noisy art rockers Dope Body, D.C.’s experimental pop outfit Hume, and Brooklyn’s avant garde lo-fi sextet Cloud Becomes Hands. The lineup is sure to be as unique as the venue it is being held in. Bookspace, 1113 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $6, All Ages (Hermit Thrushes Illustration by Johnnie Cluney; Scott Churchman Photo by George A. Schwab) – Alexis V.

Plains @ Schubas

Posted on:

Michael McGinnis has created an exciting new album under the moniker of Plains. This Chicago-native now based in Miami has combined raw garage rock with a touch of elctro-pop to create an album that is honest, straight-forward and magnetic. The self-titled project was released by 10K Islands on July 19th. My favorite track has to be the slightly mellowed out track "Innovator" because it is clear that is what McGinnis is. You can purchase the album here or stream it here.

Plains will be performing at Schubas on July 31st with The Sweeps and Poundcake.

Translations releases new cover-single + plays South Street Seaport Music Festival on August 11

Posted on:

Translations was one of the most positive notes at our May 2011 B.E.A.F. Fest – their inventive, textural psych rock also earned them a Deli "CD of the Month" in September 2010. The band just released this cover of Nico’s "I’ll keep it with mine" (here‘s the original), taking the opportunity to announce that they will be playing at the South Street Seaport Music Festival on August 11, and releasing our favorite track "Tarantella" on a limited edition 7" on Seaport Records.

Run For Cover at the Black Cat

It’s that time again! Run For Cover is back (for the 9th time) at the Black Cat to benefit the awesome ongoing music fest Fort Reno (<–click there for a sched of upcoming shows.) If you’ve been, you know it’s one of the most fun events to take place in the DC summer, with various locals coming together to cover some of the most least likely covered bands from every genre. (Rumor has it, there will be a cover band of an actual cover band this year- omg!) And if you haven’t been, then we recommend you get familiar with a little taste of some Huey Lewis & The News coverage below from last year’s RFC! Tickets always sell out, so get there early for the madness which starts at 8:00 PM, Saturday July 30. $10

Seattle City Arts Fest: Mudhoney, Seapony, Campfire OK, etc. etc. etc.

Posted on:

If the booking has a theme, it’s "big names from lots of genres."

Diverse heavyweights include Swedish pop star Robyn, Idaho indie rock icons Built to Spill and pioneering rap crew Freestyle Fellowship, from Los Angeles — touring with its original lineup for the first time in 10 years.

Also big: American country/rock singer-songwriters Shelby Lynne and Ryan Adams, and Canadian electronic duo Crystal Castles.

The fest’s lesser-known Seattle acts are also strong, representing the top tier of several local momentums: twee pop (Seapony, Witch Gardens), hip-hop and soul (Don’t Talk to the Cops, Metal Chocolates, Allen Stone) and chillwave, the trance-y genre currently taking over America’s dorm rooms (USF, Big Spider’s Back).

City Arts Fest is more than music — the programming involving movies, readings, dancing and visual art. But it’s mostly music. And most of it happens in clubs and established venues, like Chop Suey, Neumos, the Crocodile and the Showbox.

One curveball is the Pacific Science Center Laser Dome, an underutilized space for music — and a cool venue to see Oregon electronic/indie rock band Helio Sequence.

Check the full lineup and schedule at cityartsfest.com/schedule.

Pocketknife

Posted on:

You can’t really peg Pocketknife down into a single category, but you won’t really need to worry about that. You’ll be too busy dancing. The overly bright and poppy scores of sounds that spill out of the secret pockets of each track of Tough as Snails give me hope that a good old fashioned four piece can make dance music without falling prey to being annoyingly steeped in boops and beeps. Pocketknife still somehow pull off being unbearably cute while having just a touch of brashness. Tracks like "Space Invaders" can cause a basement full of kids to pogo with unbeatable smiles, while the bass and synth behind "Normandy" drive the EP into an almost heavy space. With clean cutting guitar riffs splicing it all together along with Marlin Gonda’s Todd Finkesque baritone warming every song, Tough As Snails is definitely late night (or any time of the day) dance party worthy. –MH

Tough As Snails official drops this Sunday at Mississippi Studios for freeeee with Vanimal and Pegasus Dream. Better have your dancin’ shoes on!

Packing a punch: Mikal Cronin premieres new song “Apathy”

Posted on:

For a cool treat on a summer day, take a listen to Mikal Cronin’s latest single "Apathy", from his upcoming debut self-titled debut. After a minimalistic first twenty seconds, the fuzzed-out guitars kick in to take over and sweep you through the brief, but fulfilling song. It’s a tantalizing teaser to what is in store for the full album from Cronin, originally part of Orange County surf-rock band The Moonhearts. Cronin worked with and will be touring with Ty Segall for this album, and it promises to be a great one. The LP will be out September 20th via Trouble In Mind, so mark the date off on your calendars. – Taylor Lampela
