Philly brat punks Slutever are currently on tour doing America. Well, they had a chance last week to swing by Richmond, Virginia’s WRIR Studios to lay down a couple of tunes. Below are in-studio live performance videos of the ladies kicking out “No Offense” & “I Can Dream the Rest Away.” Their next scheduled local show is Friday, August 19 headlining at Johnny Brenda’s. It’s been awhile since Mose Giganticus has graced a Philly stage. The last time we saw the screaming keytar god – he had blown out his own sound system in front of Dock Street Brewing Co. for Chernobyl Collective’s BAM-POW-zine launch. But after pulling another rigorous leg of touring that saw his recycled waste vegetable oil fueled bus reach the 100,000th mile mark, Matt Garfield is fully prepared to bring an electronic arsenal to his Kung Fu Necktie debut tonight. Armed with one of his 3 trusty keytars, he will be preaching the gospel of metal from his latest album, Gift Horse, which was released by Relapse Records. And he might time travel to the past by playing songs from his technological opus, The Invisible Hand, and his homage to Nikola Tesla, Commander. And when drummer Dan Eppihimer isn’t bashing the skins for Mose, he’ll be pounding them for his ambient doom sludge outfit Grass, who will be opening the evening. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. For fans of Cheers Elephant and for those who simply think that they look like interesting chaps who you might want to see play music, you’ll have your chance tonight at the Pastorius Park Summer Series. The foursome will be laying it all out there when they rip through two (what are sure to be) high energy 45-minute sets of psych rock, Brit-pop, and don’t-let-your-knees-stop tunes this evening. It’s a free event so you know the price is right. (Now all you have to do is find your way to Chestnut Hill.) The cheery gang will be making a few road trips this July (and you can take a look at the schedule above). They’ll also be performing in Philly again on Sunday, July 31 at the 2nd Street Music Fest. Pastorius Park, Chestnut Hill, 7:30pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
In support of a limited edition 7" recorded with the Kentucky rocker Mansions that is to be released on Tuesday, July 26th, Fences are gearing up to play a ten day tour. The 7" will be for sale in select retail shops in Seattle, San Francisco, LA, Chicago, and Louisville, as well as being downloadable digitally through iTunes. The Fences track on the split is called "Marketplace," and it’s a downbeat, self-deprecating, introspective slow-burner Fences have come to be known by and loved for.

On Thursday, July 14, Speaker Geeks presents the first of a new series of shows at the Studio at Webster Hall featuring the melodic surf-punk stylings of the ambiguously-punctuated Shark? the country-punk growl of the exclamatory Gunfight! (pictured while rocking out in the living room) and the blissed-out shoegazer pop of the un-punctuated Autodrone. Also on hand is DJ Steve Morehouse, who will spin between sets. The show begins at 6pm with an open bar ’til 7, so don’t be late!
Recorded live to tape in Pawtucket, RI, Salt for Salt is the first album by Brown Bird to capture the intense energy of the duo’s live show, surging in waves that often swell into high-spirited, foot-stomping madness.
Paring down from five musicians on their last album to the duo of David Lamb and MorganEve Swain on Salt For Salt resulted in some necessary instrument changes. Swain, a lifelong violinist, spends most of the album on cello and double bass, instruments she picked up in the past two years. Lamb has a kick drum and woodblock/tambourine rigged to a second pedal in front of him, using his whole body and voice to carry the rhythm and melody simultaneously.
Brown BIrd have released the first single from the album, Fingers to the Bone, which you can listen to below:
Antiques fourth release, JWNS is a garage-y, lo-fi affair in the best of ways. There’s brilliance beneath the smudge and that’s what makes this recording so rewarding. You have to pay attention. You have to be patient. You have to dust off the crusty veneer that cakes JWNS.
Though much of the record rocks out pretty well with wall of sound, squelching guitars relegating the vocals to the background, some of the best moments are the quieter tracks like Smile At Me and Making Friends which sound like some of Lou Barlow’s best home recordings and work with Folk Implosion.
At its core, Antiques’ JWNS is 11 tracks of fantastic indie-rock (with a bonus eleven-and-a-half minute keyboard drone tacked on at the end for good measure).
We have always been recording things on 4-tracks or shitty computer programs. Eventually, these things all kind of came together through the cosmos and the internet.
Robert was laying on the floor in his friend Michael Centore’s bedroom and the words sore and eros were written on a little notebook pad and it just kind of stuck…
Below is a new music video for Sun Airway’s “Symphony in White, No. 2,” and it was filmed at their last show in Philly on June 3, 2011 in the Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church. We are sooooo glad that Klip Collective documented this night on film. The magnificent light show is even more breathtaking in this video to us since most of our staff was so close to the stage, and not able to get its full effect. You can also check out our sweet photos from the show HERE. Enjoy! (Photo by David Turcotte) – The Deli Staff
