Social Media Darling Kina Grannis Premieres New Video On mtvU

Posted on:

With the success of Kina Grannis’ debut album, Stairwells, and high-traffic YouTube channel, it is hard to believe that the singer-songwriter was once a bit of a recluse when it came to sharing her music with others. Almost eight years ago, while attending the University of Southern California, she quietly perfected her skills on any secluded stairwell she could find so no one could hear her. The silence was considered to be her safe place to create music – her private studio. A record deal and three self-released EPs later, the Mission Viejo, CA native can be seen and heard worldwide with her candy-coated second single, “The One You Say Goodnight To,” that recently premiered on mtvU. You can catch Grannis live at the Largo in Los Angeles on July 28th before she begins her European tour in October. Kina’s album, Stairwells, is available now through One Haven Music. – Nicole Dawley

Album Review: Ty Segall, ‘Goodbye Bread’

Posted on:

His first full-length release on new label Drag City, SF-based Ty Segall’s Goodbye Bread is a fantastic mix of old and new. Tracks such as "You Can Make the Sun Fry" exhibit Segall at his most carnal and emotional. This album may inspire an entire generation to quit their day-jobs, pick up an old guitar and join in the garage rock debauchery.

Segall’s musical style picks up where his primitive rock influences left off, and he set out to give Goodbye Bread an “evil, evil, space rock” sound. His dirty hooks reek of the Brooklyn indie scene and the songwriting in the vein of The Stooges and T. Rex, all with a tone that made Jason Collett’s (Broken Social Scene) Rat a Tat Tat such a solid album. There is a very natural element to Segall’s songs, like he could be jamming right in your backyard, volume blasting, letting it all out.

The Lowbred Watts — Get Home EP

Posted on:

The Lowbred Watts is self-described bluesman, folkster and one-man band Ryan Stapler.  His debut EP, Get Home, is a testament to the DIY aesthetic—recorded in his basement using homemade and patched together gear. It’s a wonder that the music sounds this good.

Get Home combines grimy delta blues and Dylan-esque folk across five songs and never falter for a moment. Whether you’re a blues fan or not (which I’ve never really been) this EP is one to hear. Each track is a heartfelt exploration of one man’s musical passion. It’s impossible not to get sucked into the universe that is Stapler’s basement.

For the complete listening experience picture Stapler, alone. In a cold, damp basement. In the near-pitch-dark. Surrounded by a mad scientist’s inventory of homemade instruments. Singing and playing mostly for himself while recording on an antique cassette player.

Phil & The Osophers premiere video, release 7″ + announce double album

Posted on:

Walking a musical line between quirky, lo-fi and psychedelic, Phil and the Osophers have been entertaining the NYC indie scene fans for quite some time. The brainchild of Philip Radiotes and currently a trio, the band has just released a 7" single of two new songs – "Figures Of Speech" and "Ink On The Page" via Brooklyn label Factual Fabrications. These two "sonic appetizers" are going to be followed by a true "feast" consisting in a double album due to drop later this year. The band is also premiering this video of "Ink on The Page", a song that reveals a more mature sound, leaning towards a sparse psychedelic-pop with elegant Morriconian influences. We like what we hear.

Deli Presents: Il Abanico, Tan Vampires, Pack of Morleys, Melt — Concert Review 7/14/2011

tan vampires

It was a perfect night for the first in a series of artist showcases that The Deli Magazine is hosting at P.A.’s Lounge in Somerville this summer. Slightly overcast skies, temperatures in the mid-seventies, locals and hipsters manning the stoops and strolling the sidewalks of Union Square. It was quintessential summer in the city.

A Million Years’ play Mercury 2 nights in a row on July 21-22

Posted on:

Being asked to headline 2 nights in a row at The Mercury Lounge is definitely an excellent sign for an emerging band, since the staff who books the most prestigious of NYC small venues is known to be extremely picky. Brooklyn natives A Million Years – a band we’ve been following, featuring and also booking for quite some time – landed this double gig after selling out the venue in June. The quartet plays a punchy, at once catchy and incendiary brand of indie rock with epic tinges, reminiscent of a a darker and more aggressive version of Spoon. A Million Years brought their high energy live shows around the U.S. in several occasions, also opening for 30 Seconds to Mars, Phoenix, and the Drums, before being personally asked to join Jesse Malin on his U.K. tour last December. If good indie rock is your thing, you may want to be at Mercury Lounge on July 21 or 22.

The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners: Harsh Vibes

Posted on:

Harsh Vibes create a brand of psychedelic rock, but it’s certainly not the lovey-dovey, hippity-dippity kind that your parents might have grown up on. Instead, their noisy, introspective compositions may scare some acid-heads straight conjuring up a sense of not belonging which may be a reflection of what mastermind Ragnar Bergan might have felt when he decided to distance himself from the electronic/glitch "scene" that he was once a part of. Finding solace with his guitar and like-minded friends Kyle Reiff (guitar), Peter Sabatino (bass), John Titlow (drums), and Evan Raab (synth), Bergen created his own "scene"/vibe. You can hear what that sounds like live next Monday, July 25 when Harsh Vibes perform a free show at Kung Fu Necktie, but first, check out our interview with Ragnar Bergen HERE for when they recently won our Featured Artist(s) Poll as well as their track “Tripped by a Van” below.

The Victorian Dining Room Series w/Levee Drivers at North Star Bar July 18

Posted on:

The Victorian Dining Room Series has been taking local area bands and stripping them down creating an intimate experience for you, the artists and their music. (And it’s FREE!) Well, tonight you’ll find yourself transported to another time and place when the Levee Drivers take the stage. Known for their rollicking performances and bluesy countrified rock that has drawn plenty of comparisons to The Man in Black, you’ll find that what really propels the Levee Drivers is the soulful, earnest vocals and heartfelt songwriting craftsmanship of their humble leader August Lutz. But for those who simply want to rock, you’ll get your chance when they crank things up this Saturday at The Fire to close the place down. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 8pm, FREE, 21+ – H.M. C’est la Mort to Appear on Smiths Tribute Compilation

Posted on:

Seattle Shoegazers C’est la Mort have announced that they’ve been selected to contribute to a Smiths tribute album that is set to appear this October.  C’est la Mort have an ethereal, warbling sound that sails over a driving undercurrent of tight bass and drums.  C’est la Mort are reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine, with less muddy vocals, but more closely related to the likes of Comsat Angels, Slowdive and the Chameleons.  Their last album, Empty Words Fill Lonely Spaces, which sold out in hard copy form, is available for download at their bandcamp site for the skimpy price of $8.
