The Lingering Doubts is more than what we said

Posted on:

In a blog post last week we mentioned The Lingering Doubts CD release show saying that they are "a one man project serving a rather intimate folk-pop sound". Well we were quite wrong. Their label LES Records cordially informed us that The Lingering Doubts are led by lower east side based songwriter Christian Dyas, but also include Todd Perlmutter (drums), Dave Steele (guitar), Ezra Gayle (Bass) and Alex Asher (Trombone). Also they brought to our attention that while there are some acoustic "intimate" songs, there are several others that provide a much stronger energy – like this one in the embedded video, which tackles an issue many emerging musicians are familiar with.
P.S. We have to say that we are huge fans of all the bands mentioned in this song, although we would also have included The Pixies and Sonic Youth.

NYC artists on the rise: Exemption

Posted on:

Ubiquitous Long Island power trio Exemption busts through the gate with another mind-bending collection of tunes on their psychedelically sprinkled nine-track affair PUBLIC CEMETERY PARTY. This multi-faceted unit allows its prog rock sensibilities to overshadow their stoner metal tendencies and modern metal panache this time around (“Cold Bodies”) while tumultuous percussive rumbles and layers of delectable guitars illuminate their variety-addled path to musical enlightenment (“White Animal”). Exuding as many moments of jaw dropping musical interludes as produced studio slickness (“Hyper Spiral”) with a boundless energy and freewheeling musical spirit at the helm, the compositions on this release are jam packed with an encyclopedic knowledge of a multitude of rock genres that reaches down deep in the grab bag to obtain wondrous musical prizes for folks who care to have their horizons expanded (“Hounds of Sound”). – MikeSOS

It’s been quite interesting watching and hearing Berklee dropout Chris Blasucci, at first, pour his heart out into a demo song that eventually became the name of his band and inspired a bizarre movement that involves locks of hair and fireworks. Well, Hair Rocket just officially dropped their self-released first full-length album Punishment Cookie today (ha…you can tell that it is a self-release because it came on a Friday instead of a Tuesday). And we’re very happy to be presenting their Philly Album Release Party at Bookspace on Friday, July 8 w/Mammal of Paradise, An American Chinese, Busses, and Bambara! Amy Bird Going Away Party at Bookspace June 24

Posted on:

Cherished artist and friend of the local music scene, Amy Bird, is getting ready to pack her bags and head back to England. But before she does, many of her friends have gotten together to throw her one last epic hurrah at Bookspace tonight. The evening will feature plenty of great music which will be topped off by a special performance from H.O.E.B., otherwise known as MAxx from Black Landlord and Steve-Onpoint. And The Philly Folk Parade will be in full effect once Hezekiah Jones and The Spinning Leaves take the stage. Between releasing a split album for their side project Hezekiah Leaves & The Spinning Joneses and playing summer festivals (like Sun Drop Music and Arts Festival and Maysie’s Farmfest), both bands have been quite busy lately. But they’ll be right at home in this intimate setting and might even have a few surprises in store. There will also be performances from Wes Mattheu, Reverend TJ McGlinchey, and Ryan Williams as well as a special raffle for art and gift certificates, a silent auction for artwork, DJs, and plenty more so it’s sure to be one memorable going away party. Bookspace, 1113 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Bill McThrill

The Friggs w/Members of Bardo Pond and Explosive Head at Tritone June 24

One of Philadelphia’s most beloved 90s all girl rock bands, The Friggs returns to their hometown stage tonight at Tritone on South Street. For those who may not be familiar with their sound, The Friggs play a raw brand of ‘60s garage punk with a hint of surf rock, covered in vocal harmonies. The group recently released the career encompassing Today Is Tomorrow’s Yesterday, which includes all their previous vinyl releases as well as some unreleased demo tapes. Lixx’s Explosive Head are also on the bill as an opening act, featuring members of Son Of A Gun and Thee Minks. Weekly Feature: Alberta Cross

Posted on:

Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar) and Terry Wolfers (bass), grew up in the UK and other parts of Europe, began Alberta Cross, and settled in Brooklyn not too long ago. Austin Beede, Alec Higgins, and Sam Kearney joined the duo soon after and expanded AC’s sound, which crosses Southern rock twangs, pounding beats, and heartfelt elements extracted from folk and country. The band recently played two packed shows at The Rock Shop in Gowanus and will open twice for the Dave Matthews Band in Atlantic City (06.26) and Chicago (07.08)  – Read Meijin Bruttomesso’s interview with the band here.

Weekly Feature: Sherlock’s Daughter

Posted on:

The sound of Sherlock’s Daughter is a fascinating hybrid of delicate female lead vocals and somewhat unsettling instrumentation, leaning towards the droney and the dreamy. The emphasis can often be on chanting vocal choruses, with intricate percussion and pulsing keyboard undercurrents. – Lead vocalist and principal songwriter Tanya Horo helped shed some light on it all in this interview by Dave Cromwell, and listen to the single "Sons and Daughters from the band’s new EP, released in May 2011.

Interview with The Milkman’s Union

Posted on:

It is a beautiful June evening when I catch up with The Milkman’s Union at Doyle’s in Jamaica Plain for a quick bite before their show at the Midway Café. Henry Jamison (guitar and vocals), Peter McLaughlin (drums) and Alex Hernandez (bass) are in good spirits despite competing with the first night of good weather in weeks, rush-hour traffic on their trip down from Portland, ME and a Bruins play-off game. Between bites of club sandwiches we discuss all things Milkman’s Union.

We talk first about their newest release, the Telos EP, a huge left turn towards a very folky sound. Given its departure from 2009’s full-length, Roads In, I’m curious—is Telos a Henry Jamison solo release, a demo, or just a new direction for The Milkman’s Union? The answer—All three, kind of.

Brian Sances — Here Today

Posted on:

So, it’s Summer. Beach trips, sunsets, long days — minigolf and ice cream. Maybe it’s time to listen to someone who knows a thing or two about the ideal summer spot: a guy from Sandwich MA (i.e. Cape Cod). True to his roots, Brian Sances is a one man band — multi-instrumentalist and producer in one — who produces well-rounded and mature songs about the Cape, summer, love, and happiness. It sounds trite to say that any musician covers a lot of genres, but Sances really does, with some songs coming off bluesy, others folky, others reggae-tinged, others alt-rock ballads, and at least one G. Love-style beach-fire hip-hoppish track in the mix. He’s a damned good guitarist, versatile too, and his songwriting evinces a consistent outlook that is at once ecstatic about the world around and wistfully introspective. If mellow, easy tunes are what make you tick, don’t take a trip south on rt. 28 without Here Today. –Alexander Pinto
