Official Debut of White Birds Opening for Crooked Fingers at KFN June 29

Posted on:

White Birds will be making their official debut tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Former members of Drink Up Buttercup, James Harvey, Farzad Houshiarnejad, and Mike Cammarata have left behind the thrashing trashcans and carnival-esque theatrics for a much more somber, prettier sound. It seems that the aggressive operatic wails of Harvey’s classically trained voice have matured finding more solace in breezy harmonies. With their musical preferences generally rooted in the classics, you may discover that the new tunes have more similarities to genteel works by Simon & Garfunkel and laidback West Coast 60’s pop than the rowdy psychedelic escapades of White Album-era Beatles (which is a nice change for this listener but that is coming from someone who has been hearing most of the same DUB material live for years long before the songs finally made it on to their Yep Roc release). Expect the release of a new self-titled full-length album to come out this year, and fall in love all over again this evening when White Birds open for Archers of Loaf front man Eric Bachman’s Crooked Fingers. This Week’s (Partial) Menu: Show Picks for Wednesday and Friday

Posted on:

Humpday and Friday Friday Gotta Get Down On Friday. Two of the most important days of the week. And with a beautiful day like today (read: areyoufuckingkiddingmeit’salmostJuly?), nothing tops it off better than some solid shows. What’s on our plate this week?

Wednesday at Mississippi Studios:

The Donkeys "Don’t Know Who We Are" from Jeff Lowe on Vimeo.

The Donkeys, Dinosaur Feathers, and And And And. Indie glory in all it’s mid-week goodness. Worth the ten bucks to get me through the rest of the week.

Friday at a house:

Adventures! With Might, Pocketknife, Doubleplusgood.

Shows this good shouldn’t be so free. I mean, actually, they should always be this free. And this all ages. And this glorious. I might not have one drop of sweat left in me after such a great night of (probable) dancing and relentless ridiculous joy. Check the Facebook event here.

Wonderful

Posted on:

Wonderful, the summer-soaked indie pop four-piece is back from a five year hiatus with their new album Wake up to Dreamland.  On first listen, their windswept soundscapes lean heavily on the stylings of Animal Collective guru Panda Bear, but considering the many places indie groups pull/lift/steal from, they could do worse.  To their credit, the songs on Wake up to Dreamland are grandiose, audacious pieces that are extremely catchy, and considering the recent lo-fi, bedroom sounds pervasive in indie scenes today, it’s refreshing to hear a band daring to do more with their tunes.

FYI on DIYs in PHL: Philly Punx Picnic

Posted on:

An idea conjured up 5 years ago based upon the visions of several other music picnics around the U.S., the Philly Punx Picnic, which started out as a simple outdoor acoustic show and BBQ, has now grown into a 6-day festival featuring over 40 bands, BBQ, homebrews, multiple block parties, a show under the freeway at FDR Skatepark, and much more. Founded by two bright, motivated punks Nyssa Capps and Chris Tsonos, the Philly Punx Picnic aims to showcase local Philly bands and locations, support touring groups, and celebrate punk on the 4th of July. The DIY event has doubled in size each and every year, thus bringing it to “festival” status, which the two say makes things a whole lot more “real” as it has become an attraction that people all over are coming to experience. Find out more about the Philly Punx Picnic, which will be going on from June 29 – July 4, from our recent interview with Capps and Tsonos HERE.

Bass in the Bay: Mochipet, Minnesota & More

Posted on:

Selling out shows across the country and enjoying international superstar DJ status, Santa Cruz’ Bassnectar has inspired Bay Area bassheads. Two of the best, Mochipet and Minnesota play Temple in SF this Thursday, June 30 to celebrate Mochipet’s Spacezilla EP, released today. The release also features remixes from Udachi, Minnesota and Konekta.

It makes sense that tech-savvy music geeks are dominating the Bay’s bass-dubstep-glitch-hop scene, gaining great popularity through sites like Soundcloud.

Mochipet aka Daly City’s David Wang hits the decks in a purple dinosaur suit and frequent collaborator Minnesota, Santa Cruz’ Christian Bauhofer, is a History major at UCSC. Minnesota’s remix of the Mamas & the Papas’ “California Dreamin” has generated a huge buzz and his original track “Push It” is now a staple in Bassnectar sets. Boy wonder and San Jose high schooler Tanner Petulla aka Getter recently produced one of the hottest Doctor P remixes around. San Jose’s NiT GriT (Danny Beall) has only been performing since March 2010 in a co-billing with Excision, and today is an ambassador of the dubstep/grime scene.

Don’t miss these guys playing local gigs and on tour this summer.

Babe the Blue Ox plays Littlefield on July 7

Posted on:

The sonic aspect of what we call Indie Rock has evolved so much in the last 5-10 years that it feels good to hear some good old old school stuff like if it was 1995 all over again. Babe The Blue Ox have been around long enough to give lessons about this: the band formed in 1991, and in the first half of these 20 years (happy anniversary by the way) released 4 full lengths – whose titles, for reasons unknown, are all adaptations of titles of Barbra Streisand albums. Their music is extremely multifaceted, although there’s a clear post-punk/early post-rock undercurrent which ties together their sound. Imagine a math-rock version of Fugazi in their less aggressive moments. The band doesn’t play live often so you may want to catch them at Littlefield in Gowanus on July 7.

Q&A with Jake Mehrmann of Tan Vampires

Posted on:

Where did the band name, Tan Vampires, come from?

Every time I’m asked this question I feel a little guilty that I don’t have a better story to tell. We’re all pretty irreverent, and lot of the time we all spend together involves riffing on things one person says, and free associating ideas- usually with humorous or outrageous intent. I think the name "Tan Vampires" probably came from Mike Filitis (bass player) and I (Jake Mehrmann: vocals, guitar) hanging out and doing just that. Of course, shortly after I started using the name, Twilight/TrueBlood/VampireWeekend and a slew of other vampire-related pop culture became hugely popular, and I seriously considered changing it. I guess I thought there might be negative assumptions made by people who thought we had jumped on a bandwagon or something. Eventually, though, I was like "Screw it. I like the name, and I had it first."

The Barrens record release party at Cameo on July 1st.

Posted on:

This Friday, July 1st, NYC psych-rock band The Barrens will release their first full-length, self-titled album at Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg. From what we can tell from the few songs available online the band in the new record keeps faith to its multifaceted sound: often aggressive and always eclectic, these guys alternate male and female vocals, plucked guitar and full-on distorted chords, and enjoy to follow sparse textural moment with sudden explosion of rock "evil".
