The Hush Now — The Making of “Memos”

Posted on:

the hush now

I am heading to Mad Oak Studios to meet up with the lads from The Hush Now to observe the proceedings as they lay down new material for what will become Memos their third full-length release.

It’s a good night to drop in on the band. They’ve just finished a series of sessions that saw them nail take after take and finish a remarkable 13 songs in barely two days of marathon recording. They are, consequently, in rather high spirits.

The kitchen is where I find everyone upon my arrival. Drummer Barry Marino, keyboardist John Millar, lead singer Noel Kelly, bassist Pat MacDonald and guitarist Adam Quane are all hanging between takes. The kitchen area is small; it seems all the more so considering the hulking edifice of the studio’s exterior.

I am not the only visitor to the studio….

Jeffrey James, “Goin’ Back Down”

Posted on:

If you care for some bluesy soul or some southern rock, (think Delta Saints meet Stevie Ray Vaughn, with a little bit of Jamie Cullum tossed in), then you should check out the new album, "Goin’ Back Down," by Nashville singer/songwriter, Jeffrey James. The album was released on May 31st, as well as the music video for the title track. Give it a listen and you’ll probably find some great songs for your summer playlist. It is currently available on iTunes, and the music video can be found here.–Deli Staff

New Pleasure, Ben Spinks Supermelt, Vacant Fever, Feral BEAT

Posted on:

Springwater Supper Club is going to be overflowing with NEW BANDS tonight for a show whose lineup consists entirely of…well…new-ish bands in Nashville. We haven’t watched any of them play live yet, but they consist of members from Nashville bands such as Heavy Cream, Little Bandit, Paper Machete, Vernicious K’nids, and lots of others, so we at least know it’s not going to be bad because those bands consist of fine, upstanding individuals. And it’s at everyone’s favorite Springwater Supper Club & Lounge, so you know it’s going to be one of those scrappy Thursday nights. The show is $5, and according to the Facebook event, the music will start PROMPTLY at 9:30. That seems highly unlikely, but who cares. This should be an interesting show if you don’t have anything better to do. And does the name "Ben Spinks Supermelt" make you hungry by any chance…?–Erin Manning

Help Slutever Do America (Kickstarter Campaign)!

Posted on:

The “ladies” of Slutever are heading out on tour this summer to “Do America”, but first they need your money. And in return, they promise to give you lots and lots of sex (just kidding – you pervs who were psyched about that statement). But they have come up with more interesting ways to barter for your generosity like prank calling your enemies, taking you on a dream date of bowling, making you slutty outfits, being your slaves (nothing kinky), and much, much more as well as the usual merch stuff. Check out their video below and head over HERE to contribute to making America a less safer place. – The Deli Staff

Show Review: Sleep Good @ Emo’s

Posted on:

Sleep Good, a local dreamtown band of four, took an opening stage at Emo’s last Saturday (5/28).  The band was originally formed with solo recordings by Will Patterson but has kicked up a few more members since. They released their most recent album, Strange Vacations, in December 2010 and is expecting to record this summer. Lucky for you, their collection of albums were recorded on a ½’’ 8 track tape machine. So pop in the 60s cassettes feel for a happy days in the clouds of jingles and dreams. Lead guitarist Willis McClung, quotes on Saturday, “Don’t mean to be bossy people, but let’s dance!”

Banned Books & The Devil’s Horns Kill the Matador at JB’s June 2

Posted on:

Prone to catchy riffs and clever beats, Philly/South Jerz outfit Banned Books is easily memorable. A new breed of noise rock – Banned Books’ latest cuts revive chords reminiscent of the Blood Brothers nix the heavy-handed dissonance. Add in math-y backbeats that keep listener’s ears alert and you’ve got the basic formula to Banned Books at their best. The thwarting start of “Mission Creep” eases into a buzzing psych anthem that drips with lyrical charm. In a similar fashion, “Intergalactic Singalong”, off Man Maker showcases Queen-esque vocals, dramatic and quipped. Banned Books will be opening for recent tour mates and the high energy quirkiness of The Devil’s Horns Kill the Matador, who have made the hallowed trek to record a Daytrotter Session (that has yet to be released). If you are fans of earlier Man Man, then you’ll probably get what they have up their sleeves. They’ll also be joined by the considerably quieter chants of Mike Bruno’s Black Magic Family and Brooklyn’s Spanish Prisoners. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Dianca Potts

Music Frees All Festival with Turkuaz, EMEFE, Super Osei, Nyle vs. Naysayers + more

Posted on:

The Music Frees All Festival, which delivers some of the finest funk, afrobeat, soul, hip hop and reggae music acts from the five boroughs, began last night at Southpaw. Its founder, Miles Arntzen, created this three-day, three-venue festival not only to support a community of these musicians and celebrate their music, but also to encourage the famously "static" NYC audience to let go and dance! Expect to hear funkadelic tunes from Turkuaz and soulful spoken word/rap from NYC’s own Super Osei & Seattle based M$ney Jungle. The concerts at Southpaw (Night 1) and Public Assembly (Night 2) kick off at 8 PM and showcase four different bands and a DJ to continue the dance party. The Music Frees All Festival finally makes its way to Manhattan at Drom on its closing night. All the proceeds of this show will go towards the Scotty Hard Trust to help financially support the medical needs of Scotty Hard, an NYC-based music producer who became partially paralyzed after an automobile accident in 2008. While this show is a benefit, there will be no shortage of bootyshaking music from Nyle vs. Naysayers serving up clever rhymes and beats to Arntzen’s own band, EMEFE (in the picture), delivering dangerously danceable afrobeat. Radical Dads play Cake Shop on June 9

Posted on:

Radical Dads don’t have the same issues as other bands you’ve been listening to. You’re not gonna hear singer Lindsay Baker, other singer Robbie Guertin or not-singer Chris Diken talk about posturing or clubbing. Get real. They’re having way too much fun to worry about all that nonsense.
This dismissive attitude comes from a group that doesn’t just sound like ’90s indie all stars Yo La Tengo or Chavez or… (insert favorite ’90s Matador Records band here), they characterize it like an unearthed time capsule from Portland. With an imagination that includes room for dinosaurs and apocalypse all within the scope of the same song (‘New Age Dinosaur’), Radical Dads have got your needs covered.
Their new record Mega Rama (Uninhabitable Mansions) is drenched in fuzzy guitars, fuzzy screaming and fuzzy fuzziness, and all of this is somehow far too much fun to be aggressive in any way. Loud abandon is just their calling card. Any other doubts? Watch the video below for ‘Recklessness‘ and I promise you’ll get over yourself. – Mike Levine

The Notorious MSG celebrate CD release party at Brooklyn Bowl on June 10

Posted on:

The market for joke Rap groups has run dry lately. Paul Barman did his thing, Northern State did theirs (wait, were they serious?), and some of us were lucky enough to bask in the hilarity of Party Fun Action Committee. However, if you’re thirsty from something new, brazen, and potentially drenched in Sake, you should check out the Notorious MSG. Their raps are completely irreverent, self-effacing, and rife with cliché (as most joke rap should be!). Imagine if the Beastie Boys had been raised on dim sum and Sonny Chiba flicks, then sprinkle in a little 80s R n’ B for effect and you’re ready to wok. Their debut album “Heavy Ghetto” was released on May 24th, don’t miss their CD release party at Brooklyn Bowl on June 10th. – BrokeMC
