Far-Out Fangtooth and Creepoid Open for R. Stevie Moore & Tropical Ooze at JB’s June 15

Posted on:

Lo-fi will be the theme tonight at Johnny Brenda’s when Far-Out Fangtooth and Creepoid open for “the godfather of home recordings” R. Stevie Moore, who is on his first world tour ever at age 59 backed by Brooklyn’s Tropical Ooze. Gothic psych garage rock outfit Far-Out Fangtooth plan to do a limited amount of shows until the fall as they prepare for the release of their new album in October so you should probably get to JB’s early because they will be opening the evening. And their local pals Creepoid will be having a busy summer on the road as they take advantage of singer/bassist Anna Troxell’s time off from teaching art at LaSalle University. Creepoid’s first tour this summer will kick off next Thursday, June 23 at Kung Fu Necktie when they perform at long-time buddies Nothing’s Suns and Lovers Record Release Show, who will also be joining them on tour again. Stripmall Architecture: Live at Rickshaw Stop this Sunday

Posted on:

Former Low, Cocteau Twins, John Cale and UNKLE collaborators Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom created the shoegazing Stripmall Architecture when their longtime band Halou ended in 2008.

Stripmall Architecture headlines Rickshaw Stop this Sunday, June 19 with The Northern Key and Slow Skate. Expect Rebecca’s haunting female vocals, delicate beats, droning guitars, intense videos and new songs from the forthcoming sequel to last year’s EP, Feathersongs For Factory Girls Part 2.

Memory Tapes announce new album + release video for “Yes I Know”

Posted on:

Memory Tapes will be embarking on a North American tour this summer in support of new album, Player Piano, out July 5th on Carpark. The band for these dates will be expanded from the previous duo of Memory Tapes main man Dayve Hawk and drummer Matt Maraldo. The band also just released this video for "Yes I Know" (Directed by Eric Epstein) – the song will be included in the upcoming record. Recorded at Dayve Hawk’s home studio in rural New Jersey, the motif for "Player Piano" was that it would be "keyboard-based psychedelic girl group songs, a sort of Motown suicide note" – and so it seems to be, although at a tempo much slower than your average Motown record.

Duniven Takes Residency at the Silverlake Lounge in June

Posted on:

Looking for something to liven up those warm Monday evenings? This month, Duniven has a special treat for you at the Silverlake Lounge, where he will hold a month long residency. Duniven, composed of Dan Komin (Bass), Chris Vargas (Drums), Shea Branham (Lead Guitar), Ceci C. (Vocals), Jason B. (Keys), and, of course, Duniven (Vocals and Guitar), has a sound that is guaranteed to shake off that ‘case of the Mondays’ and loosen you up at night. Duniven provides a refreshing sound that separates them from the black hole of good music that’s heard, but easily forgotten. With organs, harmonica, and rusty-raw vocals, they add variance from the same-old, same-old indie-rock scene in LA, destined to leave a mark on your eardrums. Come check them out on Mondays at the Silverlake Lounge. Doors are open at 8:30pm with no cover charge. Only thing required to have a good time is you and your ears! – Mary Broadbent

What’s This?: Tin Horses

Posted on:

It’s pretty hard not to find the similarities between Tin Horses and Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Of course, there is the obvious use of the word “horse” in their names. You’ll also hear the twangs of Americana behind the down home melodies and non-traditional vocals that seem to just naturally fit. And either bands are certainly not afraid to start some raucous with their electric guitars. Well, Tin Horses are a relatively new band that follows in the fine footsteps of other local acts like The War on Drugs and Kurt Vile who have been garnering plenty of accolades on the national/international music scene lately with their tracks that feel more like they should be coming out of the heartland than our gritty City of Brotherly Love (if they didn’t possess the Philly weirdness that is infectious among our artists). Tin Horses recently released their debut EP American Radiance in March that you should check out and purchase HERE, especially if you already own the works of the previously mentioned artists. Or if you are like me, go see them live at Johnny Brenda’s tonight when they open for Nashville’s Those Darlins before dropping your hard-earned cash on some recordings. – Q.D. Tran

Common Prayer releases free cover of Talking Heads song, prapares new album

Posted on:

Common Prayer‘s Jason Sebastian Russo was on the cover of The Deli’s issue #2 (back in 2005) as the front man of Hopewell. This parallel project, which debuted in 2010 with the album "There Is a Mountain" offers a rootsier sound, filled with banjos, fiddles and mandolins, that hasn’t much in common with Hopewell’s psych rock.
Russo has been tucked away recording the next album with a gamut of worthy collaborators, and to whet our appetites for what’s to come, the band has decided to release a new single on the new O+ Festival compilation CD of 2010 Artists: a cover of “Love → A Building on Fire” by the Talking Heads.

NYC Artists on the rise: The Mast releases debut CD on June 21

Posted on:

The Mast is the new project of NYC based vocalist and guitarist Haale (in the picture) and drummer Matt Kilmer, who toured for two years with Haale’s band. Under that moniker they released a debut CD in 2008 and played over 250 shows, including Bonnaroo, Preservation Hall, and the David Byrne-curated series at Carnegie Hall. In 2010 they returned to Brooklyn where they built a studio and recorded "Wild Poppies", which will be released on June 21. Their new sound, reminiscent of a punchier, more tribal version of The Cocteau Twins, builds on Haale’s ethereal and dreamy vocals/melodies, and Kilmer’s rather aggressive and eclectic percussive work, open to all flavors of drums.

From Our Open Blog: The Boy Illinois “I Quit”

Posted on:

Perhaps one of Chicago’s best kept secrets, hip-hop recording artist The Boy Illinois recently released a new music video for single "I Quit". A loose track released in between his second solo project, Inhale Pt. 2 and critically acclaimed third solo project, Inhale Pt. 3, "I Quit" is a lyrically dark track and visual song displaying Illinois at a point in his career where he felt like giving it all up. A side not often seen or displayed by artists. Check it out. Video directed by Xack Gibson of Bag Fry Productions.

Birds of Maya Headline at KFN June 14

Posted on:

Birds of Maya are headlining Kung Fu Necktie tonight which is exactly how you should experience them. With speakers turned up to do some auditory damage and without the time constraints that an opening act might have (which would maybe get you three monster jams from the heavy-riffing garage rock power trio), you’ll feel bruised and battered by each note and drumbeat when this evening’s set is done, but that’s how you like it, right? Why else would you be at a Birds of Maya show? Helping to guarantee the need for hearing aids in your future will be Milk Music and Home Blitz.
