Photo Recap: The Homophones at KFN

Posted on:

Last Wednesday night, The Homophones promised: “Balloons. Beer specials. Fake flowers. Real blood. New songs. And a Yes cover.” They delivered and then some. The band also brought along new member and female vocalist Kate Fabrizio. You can check out my photos from their set HERE. Keep a look out for Jason Ferraro’s yet-to-be-named new project (well, it was originally called NOWHERE until he discovered that a cheesy alt rock band from Switzerland was already using it). They’ll be performing live on July 16 at the M Room with Gang and Sgt. Sass. Ferraro also has plans to take a trip to LA in the near future to record an EP for the new side project with Mad Decent’s Bosco Delrey. – David Turcotte

LC Fest day 5: Niall Connolly, Abby Ahmad and Paula Valstein

Posted on:

Niall Connolly, Abby Ahmad (in the picture) and Paula Valstein performed on Friday May 21 alongside 10 other local artists at the free Deli-sponsored 5th Annual LC Fest, organized by independent music community Local Correspondents at Bar4 in Park Slope. Irish songwriter Niall Connolly’s busy schedule had him performing 250 gigs in 10 countries over the last year, and his new album, "Super Cool Fantastic" is out in U.S. on May 28th. Alt. folk-rock musician Abby Ahmad blends intelligent lyrics and intense, intricate guitar playing, while sultry pianist Paula Valstein’s participation on Israel’s highest-rated rated television show, Kohav Nolad (which is kind of like "American Idol"), means she can’t walk unrecognized down the streets of Tel Aviv. Her debut album will be released in the U.S. in October, 2011. For the complete schedule of performers for the entire festival (doors open at 7 p.m., music starts at 8 p.m., through May 22nd), go here.

Ground Up consists of emcees Malakai and Azar and producer Bij Lincoln (a.k.a. Malcolm McDowell, Alex Azar, and Bijan Houshiarnejad, whose brothers are in Yep Roc’s Drink Up Buttercup). The crew started off back in 2008 after meeting as freshman at Temple University, and has been plotting a takeover of hip hop one mixtape at a time ever since. So far the prolific young group has already released six mixtapes, which are all available for free download HERE. Their most recent effort, Up Late, features contributions from legends in the Philly hip hop community, Freeway and Peedi Crakk. Ground Up’s sound can be attributed to their smooth production work, eclectic musical influences, and undeniable talent as beat makers. End the World w/Golden Ages & Hop Along at PhilaMOCA May 21

Posted on:

Tonight’s show at PhilaMoca is a stacked and eclectic one. Deerhaus co-founder and electronic wiz kid Francis Tseng a.k.a. Golden Ages will be headlining the show with his filled out live band sound. As stated on their Facebook, this will be their last show for an indefinite amount of time so it is bound to be a doozy. While Golden Ages on record land somewhere between the visceral, shape-shifting pop of Animal Collective and the blissful waves of chillness oozing from artists like Millionyoung and Washed Out. The more guitar-driven live sound shows Golden Ages from a different angle, a less electronic one, but still atmospheric and enrapturing. One of Philly’s best kept secrets, though not for long I’m sure, Hop Along will be performing as well. The Quinlan siblings will be bashing out their cacophonous folk tunes while Frances unleashes her vibrant croon that is both skittering and maternal. Brother Quinlan, a.k.a. Mark, will also be playing with Chicago migrant artist Shawn Rosenblatt a.k.a. Netherfriends along with Andy Molholt from The Armchairs (RIP). Don’t miss out on this live show, it could be the last living thing you ever see. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $8, All Ages (Golden Ages Photo by Jake Baumolh; Hop Along Photo by David Turcotte) – Adam G.

Nashville

Holly Golightly & Tristen @ The End, 5/28/11

Posted on:

British singer/songwriter, Holly Golightly, is finallyyyyy returning to Nashville to play us some of her garage rock/70’s RnB. Strange combination, right? Right. Her music is difficult to categorize into just a few genres because she is such a prolific musician, with over 15 albums released on various record labels since 1999 when she left garage rock backing trio, Thee Headcoatees for Billy Childish’s The Headcoats. She has collaborated with The White Stripes and The Greenhornes, (and she just so happens to be the lead singer on their song, "There Is An End," for those of you who ever saw the Bill Murray movie, "Broken Flowers," and wondered who that mysterious lady voice belongs to. Finally, you can get some sleep at night)!

And here’s the icing on the cake: Tristen is opening! We’ve talked about Tristen approximately 2,000 times before, so if you still haven’t heard her play in Nashville or seen her music video on Rolling Stone, or watched her Daytrotter session, then this show is a perfect opportunity for you to crawl out from under your rock. The show will be taking place on Saturday, May 28th at The End, and tickets are $10. Buy them in advance here, and if you want to find out more about Holly Golightly, check out the facebook event.–Erin Manning
