Glasslands: Deli B.E.A.F. party with Yvette, Dirty Fences, Gung Ho, Steve Shiffman, Shapes

Posted on:

So to compensate for the anti-hipster party last night we presented at The Knit, tonight we’ll also have a uber noisy B.E.A.F. show at Glasslands reserved to hipsters only. Here’s the lineup:

11.00 – YVETTE

This is currently one of the most interesting NYC based noise rock acts – they were just honored with our CD of the Month "title". Think industrial, noise-rock and shoegazer mixed together, topped off by some kind of melodic tribal chanting. YVETTE’s music comes as close as it gets to what the "Rapture" should sound like.

10.15 – DIRTY FENCES

When Dirty Fences crackles out “Can’t Tame Me” you get the message. This punk group takes you back to the days when CBGB’s was brand new and Syd and Nancy might fall over you while making out. Catch these cats scrap up the raw energy that The Stooges left behind years before and bring it into a new millennium sound. – MM

9.30 – GUNG HO

Gung Ho is the straight edge razor of rock. This five-piece band incorporates eclectic arrangements mixed with basic rock’n’roll rhythms, creating a fun ride through familiar territory. Taking an esoteric approach to their live sets, these guys can blanket the audience with some serious energy surges when they play a gig. – MM

8.45 – STEVE SHIFFMANN & THE LAND OF NO

I don’t say this often, but Mr. Shiffmann & Co. are IMHO one of the best kept secrets of the NYC scene – indie rock department. These guys have some fantastic "classic" indie songs, in a "90s resurgence" kind of way. They make me think of The Flaming Lips at their peak (early to mid 90s) with a better singer, or legendary Thin White Rope (incredibly underestimated US band from the 90s). Steve Shiffman & The Land of No have now embarked on a project to release an EP every three months, culminating in a full-length LP to be released on Vinyl By Later Records. The first of these EPs, "Death & Love", will be released on July 19th. You want to see them play tonight. – PDG

8.00 – SHAPES

Fresh winners of our Artists of the Month poll, Shapes embody the sounds of the DIY hipster rock scene while showcasing a freewheeling buoyancy which permeates across their raucous five-track offering I FEEL…THEREFORE I DRINK. Blending The Stooges’ attitude, My Chemical Romance’s catchiness and the The Ramones’ simplicity mixed with a shot of punk pizzazz via Dead Boys and Sex Pistols, this troupe keeps the energy level at fever pitch

Chiddy Bang Taco Bell Promo Show at FUC May 25

Posted on:

When I talked to Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege and Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin, a.k.a the smashing alt-hip hop duo Chiddy Bang, about their first major label EP debut, The Preview, almost nine months ago, they were just on the rise returning to Philly to perform at the TLA after coming back from tour behind their breakout track “Opposite of Adults. And in that short time, they went from up-and-comers to spotlight stealers. Well, they found themselves featured in the Bamboozle festival circuit and currently are confirmed for Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. Chiddy also snagged himself a Guinness World Record for the longest freakin’ freestyle ever (clocking in at nine hours, sixteen minutes and twenty-two seconds) at MTV’s O Awards. They’re planning to release their much-anticipated first major label full-length, Breakfast, at the end of the summer. And they received a heavy endorsement deal from Taco Bell as one of their featured Feed the Beat artists (which also includes locals Dr. Dog), with their hit single "The Good Life"  also being used in the current Taco 12 Pack commercial – a first-ever for a Feed the Beat artist. They’ve recently teamed up with the fast food joint to give away two tickets to 300 lucky fans for their free exclusive gig tonight at the First Unitarian Church to celebrate their newest mixtape Peanut Butter & Swelly, which drops May 27. It should be a dope show, but if you got shutout, you’ll still be able to live-stream it through Ustream, so you’ll be able to enjoy it from the comfort of home. But you’d seriously be missing out on a memorable live experience, and plenty of free tacos courtesy of the Taco Bell Truck that’ll be stationed outside. Not too shabby; not too shabby indeed. (Also check out our interview with Chiddy Bang last week HERE.) First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., FREE (for all ticket winners), 8 pm, All Ages – Annamarya Scaccia

Chicago Mixtape Show @ Empty Bottle

Posted on:

Not only can Chicago Mixtape deliver a sound mixtape every week, but apparently they can also put together a great show. This Friday, May 27th, at Empty Bottle they will host four bands, two of which are Chicago-based Ornery Little Darlings and Continental Breakfast. The other two bands are great, but I am surprised to see Michigan’s The Juliets and Milwaukee’s The Fatty Acids. The show is going to be awesome, but I thought Chicago Mixtape would deliver a Chicago line-up. Nonetheless, the show is free if you email rsvp@emptybottle.com, and $8 if you don’t.

In preparation for the show you should check out The Juliets 2010 free album here and Continental Breakfast’s free 2010 ep Seasons here. Also, I posted this video when it was released back in Feb 2010, but Ornery Little Darlings "Run From The Gun" is a great video. Their new album, Get After It, will be released on June 1st and you can get a taste of in the new video below.

The Courtesy Tier release debut album “The Resolution” at Pianos on May 26

Posted on:

The Courtesy Tier, Brooklyn-based duo and experts in the multiplication of sound, have completed their full length record, “The Resolution.” Sauntering beats and freewheeling vocal/guitar melodies of “Standing Near” introduce the bight but haunting nature of the album. A rush of distortion, recurring arpeggios, and syncopated percussion on “Rescue” transition into “Peaches” which steers “The Resolution” into a harder direction, while “Alright Mama” decelerates the record into a beautifully crafted, poignant lullaby. Light drums proceed into guitars that alternate between ringing and grungy on “Morning Run”. “Hey Bee” commences with vibrant vocals that are joined unexpectedly by sultry riffs and heavy-hitting backbeats. Howling and echoing “Calling Out” fades into the final track, “Home,” which rounds out the record, returning to the peacefully melancholy mood. “The Resolution” is a masterfully made album that balances bluesy, balladic, and buoyant. Come out and celebrate the release of “The Resolution” on May 26 at Pianos. –Meijin Bruttomesso

The Deli’s B.E.A.F. 2011 started at The Knit on May 24 with Norman Vladimir, Daniel Wayne, Bird Call, Lacrymosa + More

Posted on:

Back in December The Deli polled 30+ NYC scene-makers (including many venue promoters) asking their opinion about the best emerging local acts. Many of these artists have been booked to play our yearly fest, The Deli’s NYC B.E.A.F. (Best of Emerging Artists Fest), which kicked off on Tuesday at The Knitting Factory with our FOLK-SINGER SONGWRITER STAGE. Here’s a closer look at who’s playing this first event:

9.00 PM NORMAN VLADIMIR

Placing 8th in that list, with a voice of epic proportions and range and a portfolio of stars that he’s already shared the stage with in his young career, Norman Vladimir is one of the most promising and sought-out artists in New York City – he’ll hit thestage at 9pm. His pop/soul/funk sounds blends seamlessly with his song composition and vocal looping to engage audiences in not just a show but an entire experience.

9.30 BIRD CALL

Bird Call – aka Chiara Angelicola – will celebrate the release party for her new EP comprised entirely of cover songs entitled "Other Creatures". Bird Call possesses a soprano full of character, and plays luxuriously arranged ballads – her cover songs are reinterpretations, not playbacks: enjoy Beck’s "Lost Cause" streaming here. The Ep also features songs by Kate Bush, Nick Cave and Fleetwood Mac.
MP3: Bird Call – Lost Cause (Beck cover)

10.15 WAKING LIGHTS

New Jersey collective Waking Lights will bring some rawk and even some psych influences to this folky night of music. We are embedding here our favorite tune (probably their least folky actually) from their latest album "The Rabbit Hole".

10.45 DANIEL WAYNE

Daniel Wayne is a fireside crooner and mid-western transplant. Tracks like “The Princess & The Gun” prove that this modern day cowboy roaming the Big Apple streets has plenty of tales to share over whiskeys and cigarettes. Wayne also has that stoner garage rocker in him evident in tracks like “Protest Song”. He’ll perform at 10.45.

8.30 – LACRYMOSA

An incorporation of piano paired with classical vocals and haunting melodies make Lacrymosa a stand out amongst the standard singer-songwriter to emerge from the NYC music scene. Her sweet, angelic voice is filled with truth and emotion, accurately portraying the depth of the songs she writes and musical composure that steps outside a comfort zone and into a world of chance and exploration. She’s fresh off a May residency at The Living Room, and will be performing at 8.30.

Earlier in the evening female duo Lucius (8.30) will bring us back to the essential of music with their warm and emotional Americana, while Alison Clancy’s Huff This! (8.00) will introduce us to her deceivingly laid-back music. Fifth Nation‘s upbeat soul pop will get the show started at 7.30, while Turner Cody is in charge of keeping the spirits up after 11pm, when his moody and upbeat folk-rock will resonate through The Knitting Factory live room. Check out his latest video of the song "Back in the Land of the Living here. – Christina Morelli

mp3: Afghan Raiders – ‘If Only’

Posted on:

Further proof that Brooklyn doesn’t own post-punk dance electro, San Francisco-based trio Afghan Raiders is giving us "If Only," a track from its forthcoming EP Calls From the Universe.

Not yet convinced? Listen to the boys remix local favorites Morning Benders’ "Promises" or Neon Indian’s "Deadbeat Summer" (don’t miss Neon Indian spreading its psychedelic pop through the Bay from May 29-June 1).

Silverlake Jubilee 2011 Day 2 review

Posted on:

Silverlake was sunny and cool on this Sunday afternoon. Raheem Cohen played nice smooth grooves which was a beautiful way to start the day. Future Ghost had a Silversun Pickups vibe, not just because they’re a 3 piece, but because of their smooth indie rock jams. Tommy Santee Klaws soothed the crowds with an eclectic world folk vibe that was sweeter then honey in a warm cup of tea. By 3pm the 2,500 crowd count from Saturday was likely to have been matched once again. One trick Pony provided trippy folk rock that’s like a pop rock explosion for your ears. The Swarms performed their 1st ever show outside the Jubilee illegally, rousing a small crowd with their a 60’s Psychdelic rock. Unfortunately, their jam was shut down by the police. Slang Chickens rocked it up with a proto Ramones style. The Black Apples exude a Chris Robinson-jamband vibe of dark pop surf rock. Their tunes are best described as kitchen sink rock. Crystal Antlers has perfected a indie rock style all their own and was the stand out performance of the day. Their unique thrashy style grows out of their garage sound, and is completely incomparable. The night fell as We Are the World danced and vamped Euro Electronic grooves to close out a glorious jubilee 2011.

Sue Scrofa Serenades Silverlake Lounge This Thursday

Posted on:

Pop quiz: What does Sue Scrofa mean? Give up? I did too when asked this question. Sue Scrofa is the scientific term for our pudgy four-legged friend the pig, which just happens to be Southern songstress Alyssa Crisswell’s favorite animal. In 2006, the young musician started writing songs under this moniker, recording in her home state of Alabama while on breaks from college. Two years later, she released her first album, Alabamulance, and since has wrangled up some fellow musicians and relocated to Los Angeles. The band released its second album, White Cat, this past November. The album highlights Crisswell’s knack for writing (not to mention her beautiful, folk-goddess voice), as well as her strong Southern roots with appearances by instruments like the banjo and upright bass. Check out the quartet this Thursday, May 26, at Silverlake Lounge. $8. 21+.                 ~Katrina Nattress

White Denim Drops D

Posted on:

White Denim‘s fourth or fifth full-length, depending on how you count, arrives today. It is named for the fourth letter of our alphabet, and sports a round shape, quite flat, and shiny. It will be encoded with pyschedelic garage blues punk madness, and will amplify you as you amplify it. It will function, in short, like a killer album from a talented band. You know what to do.
