Fin de Cinema: BLOW-UP at Holocene This Thursday

Posted on:

Dive into mod London with the story of a photographer who believes he’s photographed a murder! The thrill and chill of the plot aside, the film is filled with the flash of 60’s-soaked, large-haired London, Vanessa Redgrave doing what she does best, and Holocene has invited three of our favourite locals to bring it all to life. What more could you ask for than Monarques, Rocky & The Proms, and The Reservations playing a brand new score for your dancing selves? The film starts promptly at 9. Wear your finest mod attire! You won’t be able to tell London 1966 from Holocene 2011.

Dynasty Electric release debut album

Posted on:

Brooklyn based Jenny Electrik and Seth Misterka are the psychedelic electro band Dynasty Electric. Their new album Golden Arrows came out on iTunes on May 8. It’s fresh as can be, and a good kind of fresh: everything feels classic and familiar, with vocals sometimes reminiscent of No-Doubt Gwen, until they switch to intense, Björk-like huffs and reverb. The whole sound can be psychedelic, sleepy, or straight sugar. "It’s infectious, baby; directionless, love" (from their song "Infectious"–our favorite–see here). – Caitlin Clive

The Holy Mess Gettin’ Sloppy at The Barbary May 11

Posted on:

With a name like The Holy Mess, you expect plenty of beers to be drank and spilled during their set as strangers’ bodies fly into each other. An eclectic mix of pop punk and soul, their music allows for a smooth blend of raging and shoving between ecstatic hi fives. The local foursome’s pop melodies complimented with primal yells and adrenaline-filled riffs create a somewhat familiar yet innovative sound that will pack plenty of sweaty bros onto the often perspiration-soaked dance floor of The Barbary this evening. The Holy Mess will be opening for Dear Landlord, which is made up of members from Copyrights, Houseboat, Off with Their Heads, and Gateway District, along with dirty Jerz’s Banquet and fledgling local outfit Luther. The Barbary, 951 N. Frankford Ave., 6:30pm, $8, All Ages – Emma Branson

NYC Artists on the rise: Pursesnatchers

Posted on:

The names of Dirty on Purpose and Au Revoire Simone take us back to the very early Deli years – we covered both bands in print and online somewhere around 2005. ARS also played a rather legendary (at least for us) Deli show at Pete’s Candy Store (capacity… 30 people maybe?) before they started filling up Japanese arenas. But why are we saying this – you ask? Because we just learned that Doug Marvin from Dirty Projector and Annie Hart from Au Revoir Simone not only are married, but they also have a new musical project called Pursesnatchers. This is actually Doug’s home recording project which ended up expanding into a 4 members band. Pursesnatchers have their debut album "A Pattern Language" scheduled to be released in July. Faithful to Dirty on Purpose’s aesthetics, this free single offers some catchy and upbeat drone-pop, although the sound and style are quite different from Doug’s old band – in a word, more concise.

P.S. But wasn’t Annie also involved with DOP at some point?

Interview with RED BELLOWS

red bellows

Check out the deli’s interview with Red Bellows, one of our bands of the month in April! Be sure to check out their show tomorrow, 5/11, at church in Boston with whenairturnstowater, Cats and Cats and Cats, and Ladycop. Red Bellows goes on at 8 pm.

deli: How did the band start?

Red Bellows: Uncontrollable outside factors caused the creation of this band. Beckoned from different corners of the planet, the RB sound evolved from four prototypes bouncing around like a ball of barbed friction.

deli: Where did the band name "Red Bellows" come from?

RB: We looked through a camera with red bellows once. We liked what the other end looked like. We also couldn’t call the band Shred Yellows or Bread Cellos because that would just be ridiculous.

Thurston Moore releases new solo album + unveils sonic guitar tunings

Posted on:

Thurston Moore – a man who ages so well he could be named "the Dorian Gray of the NYC Scene" – is about to release a new solo album entitled "Demolished Thoughts" under Matador’s powerful wing. The mp3 available for download (embedded here) features a cleaner, acoustic-but-still-fuzzy version of the usual dissonant-ish guitars that are such a big part of the Sonic Youth sound, plus a welcome use of a string section, which adds an overall orchestral flavor. Quite interestingly, the new album will feature not only a bio written by Thurston himself, but also a series of particular guitar tunings everybody’s noise rock hero has been adopting during the songwriting process.
