Highwire Gallery ushers in their 2nd annual outdoor music festival this Saturday, and it’s set to be a widespread cultural explosion that features quite a diverse bill of music (and that’s just the way we like it :o). Rampant mega jam masters Birds Of Maya headline with their epic shredding guitars. Gallery regulars Jesse Sparhawk & Eric Carbonara will provide their ethereal 60 string (22-string upright chaturangui guitar & 38 string lever harp) compositions. Meanwhile the ladies of Bad News Bats will be bringing their distorted garage rock, and Acids Kicks will preview songs from their debut 7”, while The Sea Around Us will be showcasing their dreamy multilayered folk music. Add in Chris Forsyth, Kohoutek, Magnetic Dog, SplitRed (featuring members of Shot X Shot, Cuddle Magic, Sonic Liberation Front, Bird Fly Yellow, and Live Like A King) and more, and you have a stacked lineup for what should be some beautiful weather. Weekly Feature: The Spring Standards play Bowery on May 24

Posted on:

A little bit blues-y, a little bit folk, The Spring Standards give and take a little bit of everything in their music. The low-key melodies, gentle harmonies, and plodding along keys and drums make for wonderful ditties to nod one’s head to or get lost in. The band clearly has tons of passion and compassion (see their kitten stuck in a car story in the interview here), and a tight knit camaraderie all of this shines through their bright vocals and down to earth instrumentals. Some songs border on being ballads, while others are downright country-blues tunes. – See the band live at Bowery Ballroom on May 24, read Lauren Piper’s interview here.

LC Fest day 4: Secondstar, Heidi Sidelinker and Third Wheel Band + more

Posted on:

Secondstar, Heidi Sidelinker and Third Wheel Band (in the picture) are among the 13 acts playing tonight at the free Deli-sponsored 5th Annual LC Fest, organized by independent music community Local Correspondents at Bar4 in Park Slope. Secondstar plays folk-pop that veers from bright and shiny to dark and melodic, while Heidi Sidelinker’s solo work as a singer/songwriter (she’ll also perform tonight with her band Lowry) combines wistful, lilting tunes with sweetly melancholic acoustic underpinnings. The Third Wheel Band is an American roots group combining influences as varied as bluegrass, country, folk, talking blues, early jazz and rock ‘n’ roll. Their debut album On Willow Street was released in November 2010. For the complete schedule of performers for the entire festival (doors open at 7 p.m., music starts at 8 p.m., through May 22nd), visit the LC website.

NewVillager plays 285 Kent on May 20 (tonight) + opens for Okkerville River and Titus Andronicus

Posted on:

NewVillager put on one of the most impressive shows I witnessed during CMJ 2009. In front of a vividly colored, transformative sculpture, Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini performed “new pop,” their own brand of pop pastiche riddled with electronic touches, in the crowded basement of The Delancey. At the time, they had only a 7-inch single with the groovy electropop tune “Genghis On” and the tribalesque “Rich Doors.” The duo recently released the single “LightHouse” accompanied by a hyper hypnotic video and announced the bewitching, nimble song is from its debut album set to drop on August 16 on IAMSOUND, home to MEN, Suckers and Telepathe. Although NewVillager has comparatively very little recorded music available, each song on the forthcoming album apparently was recorded in 10 distinctive versions complete with different lyrics and melodies. But music is only a small fraction these multimedia artists obsessed with mythology engage in. They post photos of their striking work and inspiration on their blog. The band has lately been playing with a wide variety of bands in New York, including MNDR, Gordon Voidwell, MEN, Savoir Adore and Princeton, which only speaks to their chameleon-like appeal. Before NewVillager embarks on a few gigs with Okkervil River and Titus Andronicus on the West Coast, the band will play a show tonight at 285 Kent for Gigantic Magazine’s launch party. – Nancy Chow

New Video: “Dear My Body…” – Power Animal & Re-release of People Songs w/Profits Going to the Japanese Red Cross & Other Charitable Projects!

Posted on:

Below is a new music video from Power Animal for the track “Dear My Body…” from their album People Songs (which was easily one of our favorite albums from last year). The video was directed by Jordan Smith. People Songs was originally released on Waaga Records (an offshoot of Lefse Records), and the album is being re-released via Human Kindness Overflowing, which is a charitable organization and label whose “goal is to work with artists, musicians, labels, and generally good people to help raise money for various causes” and was started by Paul North (Sunnybrook) and Power Animal mastermind Keith Hampson. You can purchase People Songs HERE which will also include two new bonus tracks of remixes. Profits from the album will be split with 50% going directly to the Japanese Red Cross and the other 50% to funding future charitable projects. Please pay it forward and purchase a copy! Also keep a look out for Power Animal’s new Exorcism EP, which will be a 100% charitable release featuring remixes from Golden Ages, Teen Daze, Botany, Melting Season, Spirituals and Truman Peyote. Much love! – The Deli Staff

Well-aged Vintage Kicks at Tritone May 20

Posted on:

Tonight Tritone will host Philadelphia-by-way-of-Jersey retro-pop-punk posse Vintage Kicks. Those who cringe at the mention of pop-punk, fear not. This group is wise beyond its one year of existence. The Philly fivesome has created a seamless fusion of 60s pop-rock and post-punk/electronicore. Vintage Kicks play percussion-infused jangly rock and stitches it with a thread of punk attitude bringing on a ringing emotional edge. Alex Ebert meets Jesse Lacey in this fuzzed-out and harshly crooned rock ‘n’ roll – a well-aged pop-punk. Also joining them on the bill are Andrej the Giant, Midwest Skies, and Dot Square. Tritone, 1508 South St., Philadelphia, PA, 9pm, $7, 21+ – Jules Friedland

He’s Your Brother, She’s Your Sister end spectacular residency

Posted on:

With themed nights, audience wardrobe suggestions and hoards of special guests, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister has turned its month-long residency at the Satellite into quite a spectacle. Though the residency will end with a show presented by The Deli on Monday, the band is showing no signs of loss in energy or creative ideas. Reflecting on the band’s energetic mix folk and psychedelic music, each week has presented a different theme based around the new single "Escape Tonight." The theme for last week’s sell-out show was "Escape Judgement" and featured appearances by Jenny O and performance artists Anna Oxygen & Cloud Eye Control. For the final show the theme will be "Escape to the Abyss" and the band suggests that attire be psychedelic and experimental. Guest performers will include Shakey Graves and DJ sets by Luke Top of Fool’s Gold and Mora Elian. Also scheduled to perform are Jared Mees & The Grown Children, Amanda Jo Williams, Featherbeard and Black Hole Oscillators. As if the free performances were not enough, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister will give away an an exclusive art-adorned souvenir USB card containing music and videos to the first 100 people who visit the merch table. The show is 21+. – Karla Hernández

Saint Motel celebrates Judgement Day

Posted on:

LA Indie rockers Vanaprasta open for headliners Saint Motel at the Roxy Saturday night, May 21st, to celebrate Judgement Day. Saint Motel has an Indie Cult following that is rapidly expanding because of their recent UTube documentarian style videos about the world coming to an end. Vanaprasta has been gaining steam for quite some time and both these bands should electrify the stage, so if you’ve gotta go, what a way to end it. See the 2 out of 3 videos that have been released so far here:

Candy Golde

Posted on:

Indie music super group Candy Golde began out of necessity. Chicagoans Nicholas Tremulis and Rick Rizzo(Eleventh Dream Day) were playing an acoustic set together when a phone call came from John Sinclair who announced the MC5 were going to play and wanted Tremulis to open up for them. Tremulous seized the opportunity but had to throw a band together. He snagged Rizzo, had worked with Bun E Carlos (Cheap Trick) before and then added on John Stirratt(Wilco). Some might think this was a dream, but it was just a day in the life for these talented musicians.

The groups name was born as Wesley Kimler, a painter and friend of Tremulis, began calling him Sugar Pink after the album he had put out called "Pinky". Kimmler thought “it would annoy me, but I took it as my stripper name and so I started calling him Candy Golde.” Tremulis figured “it would embarrass him if I called him that in public, and it did, so it served its purpose.” Naming the group after his buddy’s stripper name takes the joke to a whole new level.

“Nick knows everybody in the world…he’s like the Mayor of Chicago” Stirratt jokes as the guys playfully rib each other. It comes off as a project born from necessity, yet grown from mutual respect, admiration, and love. The musical community in Chicago is tight because “we’re older and time sort of weeds out the *ssholes” Tremulis shares. He notes that people get tired of the business, egos fuel departures, and so some of the more difficult people to work with fall out. The fact is because Tremulis has been on tour and played many gigs for countless years, his musical community now spreads throughout the world.

The industry has also changed allowing these vets more freedom. “The restrictions with labels and lawyers have passed” with the demise of the industry. Tremulis happily cites that now “we can record with whomever we want.” The guys do exactly that and created an EP rather than a LP because they wanted to keep their project “fun”. They also will not be touring, because being on a bus "just isn’t fun" and "smaller towns just don’t have the same crowds anymore" explains Stirratt. Instead these 20 plus years music vets are only playing special gigs, like SXSW or at the Double Door in Chicago last week. They prefer to keep the “sweat and grind” for their “day jobs” of their other bands and keep this as “light” as possible.

Another fun aspect of life these guys share beyond music is coffee. Bun E Carlos owns a coffee house in Northern Illinois and it was suggested to him that he have his own “Bun E Blend” which can be ordered online. He gets paid in coffee from a gentlemen in Minnesota who sells the coffee for him. John Stirratt and Wilco have their own blend that was created and sold through Intellegensia coffee shops. The company works to bring fair trade blends into major cities in the US. Stirratt and other Wilco members occasionally get a free cup of joe and has total respect for the company and the product they produce in their name.

These talented musicians have kept their art light and fun throughout the years. They’ve learned how to enjoy life, collaborate well under pressure, and survive in a tough industry for all over 20+ years each. In keeping with the light, fun, spirit of Candy Golde’s project, we all gave up our porn/stripper names to each other and now share them with you…

Nicholas Tremulis = Anthony Fair

Bun E Carlos = Ezualia Parkview

John Sirratt = Chadwick Jane

Michele = Marie Ridgewood
