Tha Glass Canoe premiere video for “First Ideas”

Posted on:

The wonderfully talented, and I hesitate to agree with the following, psychedelic pop band The Glass Canoe recently premiered their video for "First Ideas" over on My Old Kentucy Blog. We’re reposting it here for your visual and aural pleasure.

"First Ideas" is aptly named, being the first single from the group’s debut album Chimera. The song is carried across the shoulders of a lullaby-inspired guitar melody before fleshing out with equally wonder-inducing instrumentation and sleepy-eyed vocals. There are two intriguing vocal breaks, the latter leading to the crescendo of the track before fading into bliss. The video, directed by Michael Shainblum, reflects the mood of the song with golden, technicolor, nostalgia inducing landscape.

Video for The War on Drugs’ “Comin’ Through”

Posted on:

Below is a music video for The War on Drugs’ “Comin’ Through” from 2010’s Future Weather EP. It surfaced today (special thanks to PW’s Making Major Moves who brought it to our attention), and was actually posted two months ago. We’re not really sure if it’s the song’s “official” music video because there was no mention of its existence by The War on Drugs or Secretly Canadian, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it was, and Adam Granduciel just didn’t bother telling anyone. (Well, at least we know that he has finished his new album.) Whatevs – enjoy! – The Deli Staff

Update: Heard from The War on Drugs camp that this is NOT the official music video for "Comin’ Through", and no permission was asked or given. However, they did seem impressed by the effort so maybe it will be someday. Also expect to hear news about the release of their new album next month!

Useless Keys

Posted on:

Useless Keys mixes quiet blues, psychedelia rock and adds a punctuation mark. Guitar riffs sound like a sirens song and driving drums accentuate sweeping melodies while vocals inaudibly croon. This quartet’s most recently released EP "Is the Painting Changing" is available online and at shows.  If you like their song "White Noise", just wait and see what they have in store for you next.  Catch this LA Indie scene staple play their brand of strung out rock at The Satellite with Brother Tuesday, April 26 at 10pm.  Michele McManmon

Photo Recap: The Extraordinaires, Juston Stens and The Get Real Gang & Gold Crowns Show at KFN!

Posted on:

Last Friday night, there were good vibes all around for such a bittersweet evening. The Extaordinaires headlined at Kung Fu Necktie, and it was founding member and bassist Matt Gibson’s last show with the band as an official member. As you may have learned from our interview with Jay Purdy last week HERE, Gibson will be leaving The Extraordinaires to join Man Man for their next extensive tour(s) in support of their upcoming album Life Fantastic. However, there wasn’t any ill will as the rest of the band and Gibson played their hearts out alongside new bassist Adam Ravitz. In fact, it was quite touching to watch Purdy and Gibson’s interaction throughout the evening on stage which culminated in a loving embrace where they were locked shoulder-to-shoulder towards the end of the set as they sang “Warehouse Song” (which was rather fitting, especially for me, because it was probably my first introduction to The Extraordinaires’ music). Helping to celebrate this momentous occasion were former Dr. Dog drummer Juston Stens and The Get Real Gang (who served up a rollicking set and proved that their early studio recordings truly don’t do them justice) and Gold Crowns (featuring members of The Invisible Friends, Dark Horse and The Carousels, and Sweatheart). You can check out the rest of our pics from the evening HERE. (Photos by David Turcotte) – Q.D. Tran

Dirty Gold debuts with “Roar”

Posted on:

This San Diego based trio are blazing a new trail on the Indie music scene. Their recently released debut EP "Roar" (from Auto Tone records) mixes a tropical island beach style with romantic lo-fi sensibilities. Dirty Gold‘s video for the single "California Sunrise" echoes fuzzy memories of days past intertwined with a shattered idealistic hope for the future. Their music is of a youthful offering for a time when disillusionment meets maturity. The greatest answer for this confusing time in life is to have a good old fashion beach party with some frosh tunes like those found in the Dirty Gold hills of SoCal.  Michele McManmon

Last Minute Plans: Talons @ The Whistler

Posted on:

Talons is essentially the work of Mike and Sommer Tolan, and together they make beautiful and heartfelt and soulful music. Even though the band is based in Chicago their music is very much rooted in nature. Most of the new album was written while Mike with living in Spain. The new album "Songs for Boats" is a collection of near hymns masterfully sungs over an array of acoustic guitars, autoharps, chord organs, clarinets, violin and lapsteel. It is peaceful and relaxing through out. The local label Positive Beat Recordings released this album on March 29th, but the band is celebrating the release tonight (4/25) with a free show at The Whistler.

The Lights Out — Primetime

lights out

If you miss the sound of the hair bands from the 80’s and early 90’s, but really can’t and won’t go back to that lifestyle, not only do I not blame you, but I’m going to help you out. Primetime, the latest release from The Lights Out, has all the qualities of hard rock classics from the pre-grunge era without all the vapid lyrics, drug problems, and VD. That isn’t to say that it sounds outdated, however.

Utilizing the talents of Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, the production blends familiar guitar squeals and monster snare punches with smaller reverberation times and less gated everything to suit our modern sensibilities. Especially appealing is that they’ve managed to capture the fun and energy of a The Lights Out live performance, which you might keep in mind if you are planning a kegger or bat mitzvah, supposing your sister-in-law can stop being a bitch for two minutes and realize what a great fucking idea it is.

The whole affair moves at a pretty brisk pace with a couple of exceptions, the most notable of which being the album close, Having It All, which actually reminds me of Soundgarden. Other tracks you should look out for are Enilyse, a jaunty tune about not being a very good person, and Primetime which I’ve been too busy dancing to to care what it’s about. Be sure to stop in to one of their shows (May 14th at Brighton Music Hall, perhaps?) and pick up a copy! Oh, and if you do, tell ’em Murphy sent you. I’ve always wanted that to happen.

EP Review: Mi Ami – Dolphins

Posted on:

Listening to the Dolphins EP from San Francisco’s Mi Ami feels like a thirty minute trip into deep space. Pulsing, deep, rhythmic beats and shrill desolate vocals, plunge you further into the journey. It’s electronic pop for when its 4:30am and you’re positive you’ll never need sleep again.

With one 4 song EP, Mi Ami have gone from high energy, noisy avant garde rock trio to a slightly mellower, hypnotically intense electronic duo. No review of Dolphins can ignore the fact that in the past year and a half, Mi Ami has created something many fans might not expect. There is not a trace of guitar or any of the acoustic percussion styling that is very much apart of what was their signature indie rock sound. However, Daniel Martin-McCormick’s shrill often unintelligible lyrics carry the Mi Ami torch.

What’s left in this stripped down electronic version of Mi Ami is a dark, synth laden landscape of sound where the electronic pulsing kick drum pushes you through dense air. There’s a lot of isolation coming through on Dolphins. It’s haunting. A nighttime beach party in a cave where you realize you don’t recognize a single face around.

Dolphins is not a hard pill to swallow, just an unexpected curveball. Imagine Blond Redhead putting out an album that sounded like Crystal Castles and you’ll get the gist. With that said, Crystal Castles fans should definitely check this release out.
