On Monday 4/4/11 The Vandelles will play The Knitting Factory, promoting the just released EP "Summer Fling", one of the best shoegazer/noise rock records coming out of NYC as of late. We are looking forward to hearing live the single "Get Around", which comes at you with a "whoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hooo" as super fuzz guitars are matched against thundering drums, and "Summer Fling" with its dark and deep tone, cascading vocals, and guitar atmospherics. Fans of Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine should be there! – Dave Cromwell
Milo Greene – “1957” video and free download
It’s serendipity really. I stumbled across Milo Greene’s video for their song “1957” and I was hooked; I had their song on repeat for the following hour. Then I found out they were playing along with Honey Honey for the last night of their Bootleg Theater residency and I couldn’t pass that up.
What I attended ended up being the quintet’s first official show. Deep locked-in percussion created the anchor to four part layered melodies and instrument switching fun. For a new band, I was pleasantly surprised they injected sweetly crafted interludes into what would have been an abbreviated set; I can only hope that these are seeds of songs to come. It’s not quite indie, it’s not quite folk, and it’s not quite pop but a blend of all three that conjures memories of spending time on a sun drenched porch of an east coast home.
You can download “1957” via the band’s BandCamp page or check out the video below for a slightly different version.

The Fling- Daytrotter Session + video for “Wanderingfoot”
The Fling‘s new video for "Wanderingfoot" was recorded while rocking a live session at the infamous Daytrotter Studios in Illinois. The other half was filmed in between all the running around while on tour with Darker My Love and Delta Spirit last year. Drenched with cheap beer, youth, and nostalgia, the video reminds us not to take life to seriously and drives the urge to travel and enjoy life the way it was meant to be.

Arc In Round Headline at PhilaMOCA April 2
Tonight the star gazing power pop of Arc in Round will come to life when they host Brooklyn’s Grooms (Kanine/Death by Audio) and Chicago’s Roommate at the Philadelphia Mausoleum Of Contemporary Art or PhilaMOCA. Arc in Round is like a fantastic video game soundtrack with a sonic overhaul that is the work of production guru Jeff Zeigler. The astral synths tower over driving post-rock percussions and guitars in “Light” – off of Arc in Round’s latest release Diagonal Fields. Other tracks like “Slow Ceiling” demonstrate a hypnotic-gorgeous-adrift-at-sea vibe. Each song is meticulously crafted to have climaxes of cinematic proportions and the results are dreamy, soaring epics. Below is a live in-store performance video of Arc In Round’s "II" from Art In The Age. Opening the show is Ladies Auxillary. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $8, All Ages – Adam G.

Work Drugs Open for Bill Ricchini’s Summer Fiction at JB’s April 2
Work Drugs is a relatively new local act that has been invading the blogosphere with their “sedative-wave/smooth-fi” sounds. The duo of Thomas Crystal and Benjamin Louisiana with lovely additional vocals from Joan Wellfleet creates seductive tracks made “specifically for dancing, boating, yachting, sexting, and living.” They’ll be warming up for their upcoming tour with Two Door Cinema Club tonight at Johnny Brenda’s where they’ll be opening for Bill Ricchini’s Summer Fiction. Tonight’s show is presented by Yvynyl and will also include Brooklyn outfits Snowmine and Guitars. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Where Is My Mind?: Slutever
The one-two combination of Slutever’s Rachel Gagliradi and Nicole Snyder pack quite a wallop on their latest release Pretend to Be Nice via Drexel University’s student-run Bantic Media. The ladies of ill repute pound out feisty, unapologetic tracks full of all the right pop hooks to knockout unsuspecting music listeners. Chosen from a batch of band submissions to Bantic, it seems that the Drexel undergrads are getting quite their money’s worth out of their college education. Well, they’ll be celebrating the release of Pretend to Be Nice this evening at Hong Kong Garden (show moved from The Ox) with JEFF the Brotherhood, Dry Feet, and The Eeries as well as plenty of their friends, fans, classmates, the Deli staff, and hopefully you. We had a chance to catch up with Gagliradi and Snyder to discuss their experiences working with Bantic Media, their first tour that included a stop at SXSW, our mutual fondness for herb(s), and much more HERE.
Album of the Month: And And And’s Life Ruiner!
Rarely do I like to refer to a band’s self-referential promo for a new album, because in most cases, it won’t tell you anything about what you will get out of listening to it. This is definitely not the case for the Portland sextet And And And, who dubbed Life Ruiner as a “concept album” covering all the major topics of dairy products, fiddles, being like totally-super-stoked about being in a band, America, alcoholism and out of body experiences, all of which they promise will eventually converge into a singular concept (“NOT.”) Ladies, did I forget to mention that 2/3 of And And And is suffering from involuntary celibacy, and at least one of them is about to get his own place very soon?
Basically, the underlying concept of Life Ruiner is what I like to call kidulthood, especially that of this generation, when being in your mid-to-late twenties means enduring another day living at your parents’ place because even Portland’s low-cost living won’t accommodate an artist’s rent. Nathan Baumgartner has all of us kidults down when he yells, “I hate this town / I’ve just been fucking around. / I want more alcohol!”
Of course, you’ll be lucky if you can make out much of the lyrics from this lo-fi garage-produced jam, but that’s exactly why we love them, right? We love those moments when it sounds like they’re playing in the room down the hall, and what you’re hearing is actually the sound of distant music through plaster, or maybe the meddled buzz of an old radio tuner. And then there are those moments of pure clarity, when you swear you’re standing 5 feet in front of them hollering and dancing at the Mississippi Studios. Maintaining that fantastic balance of high-low styles whilst orchestrating a sextet could be incredibly difficult, but these guys do it well and they make it fun. In fact, it’s pretty obvious that they all are having a good time, in spite of their suffering with kidulthood and involuntary celibacy.
By the by, Life Ruiner releases via Apes Tapes on April 1, so grab yourself a cassette at Mississippi Studios tonight (which also comes along with a free MP3 download, for all you tape-playerless folks)! – April Ehrlich
It’s Friday, Friday, Gotta Get Down On Friday!
Alright, Portland. It’s Friday. We so excited. Like any other Friday of the year, there are a thousand choices for shows tonight. And And And in Northeast, Holocene in Southeast, which show will you taaaaake? (I really hope the Rebecca Black tune was playing in your head while you read that, because that plague of a song is branded into my brain, and I’m going to bring as many of you down with me into the pits of song-stuck-in-my-head hell). Anyway. Seriously, which show are you going to choose?
Dom, Jeffrey Jerusalem, Heavy Hawaii, and Copy @ Holocene. 10 bones. Enjoy the self-proclaimed "Lady Gaga of garage rock", Dom, hailing from Massachussetts, then dance till you can’t with the boop-boop-beeps of Jeffrey Jerusalem, then keep sweating with the relentless track-dropping of DJ Copy.
The Deli Portland’s own Artist of the Year for 2011, And And And releasing Life Ruiner on Apes Tapes at Mississippi Studios, along with Woolen Men and Blast Majesty. Not to mention that Woolen Men are on the other side of that Apes tape. A definite fiasco of drunken proportions, a race to black out, and a transformation of this springtime night into a midsummer dance party. And this one is free!
101x Homegrown Live w/WMMF, Tacks, Shapes Have Fangs + more…
The latest installment of 101x’s Homegrown Live series takes place tonight 4/1 @ the Mohawk, headlined by What Made Milwaukee Famous but also featuring Tacks, The Boy Disaster, Ovenbirds, Shapes Have Fangs, The Curious Mystery, and Rayon Beach.
Tacks, The Boy Disaster, the rare, grammatically confusing band with a comma, have been around creating their dreamy, lush, orchestral pop for a few years now, occasionally disappearing from view but always worth seeing if their heads appear. They granted their EP Oh, Beatrice a comma as well; they may even give a few out at the show tonight. Video above for "Frozen Feet" directed by none other than Sunset‘s Bill Baird.
