The album was officially released in February, and is inspired by and is based on the work of Buckminster Fuller. This is the bands fourth album in eleven years.

Album of the Month: Laughing Man – The Lovings (’63-’69)

Posted on:

Laughing Man

Low fidelity swagger. That’s what Laughing Man’s debut album, The Lovings (’63-’69), exudes. It’s a short album that spans only seven tracks, but it is dense with artistic potential. The first thing you will notice when listening to this album is the unique sound of the production. The vocals of singer Brandon Moses are quivering and distorted, hiding just below the surface in a way that convinces your ears they are listening to antique vinyl. The guitar and drums manage to be both tastefully understated and sonically raunchy. The song structures are simple but based around the sophisticated voices of jazz chords and a wide range of tonality.

I feel tempted to write about this album in a way that suggests that its very genius is founded on a perfectly balanced merge between classic blues and soul and the leading edge of rock music; that the juxtaposition between post-modern soundscapes (such as the lovely minimalist droning on "Swirl") and dripping-with-attitude blues manages to adeptly cross musical boundaries in style as well as in the audience that appreciates and supports it. I’d like to go on and on about those things – about how a whole history of music that has thrived in D.C. is somehow apparent in seven short songs. I’d really like to point out that the last track on the album, "Mood and Dress," manages to consolidate all of those points the strongest. This is possibly the most self-aware track on the album with Moses’s emotion filled vocals ringing in the fuzzy background as bubbly supporting voices are brought to the very front of the song in perfect clarity.

However, I feel pretty sure that the band would cringe at reading that sort of review. Getting back to my original thesis, I’m reasonably confident that Laughing Man really just took all the music that they grew up loving and stirred it up into a really great debut. It’s lo-fi without pretention and an homage to the early days of soul without sounding geriatric (despite what the album’s aging title may imply…)

Q&A with Queen Caveat

Posted on:

What’s sexier than a front woman who can strut her stuff? Easy. It’s a band that’s a hard rocking and hardworking total package. Ben Epand and Lauren Little of Queen Caveat answered some questions with us for the uninitiated.

Biggest challenge for the band in 2010?

QC: Finding our drummer. We recorded our EP w/ Dan Epand of Nico Vega on drums last year and played a handful of shows when he was available, but we suffered months of brutal auditions, stagnancy and frustrations waiting to find someone that musically embodied our direction as well as a friend that could join our lifelong marriage. Will (bass) mentioned to the band one evening that his good buddy from Berkely College of Music, Jesse Magnuson was moving to LA in a few weeks and he thought he’d be perfect. The rest is history and we secured Jesse Magnuson (drums) and all the bolts we’re in place to begin our journey together.

Nashville Daytrotter Sessions

Posted on:

Doing a Daytrotter session seems to be a developing trend for some of our favorite Nashville bands recently, and that’s awesome because it just means more outside-of-Nashville-exposure-that-isn’t-just-country-music. If you’re not familiar with Daytrotter, it’s a music/entertainment website that gives "exclusive, re-worked, alternate versions of old songs or unreleased tracks by your favorite bands and your next favorite bands." It’s kind of like Black Cab Sessions or Take Away Sessions on La Blogotheque, but extra special because you have the option of downloading mp3 files of any session you want for free! It’s a great way to hear the versatility of the artist, which is why we wanted to give you a comprehensive list of our favorite Nashville Daytrotter sessions that have occurred in the past several months. Enjoy :)–Deli Staff

Where Is My Mind?: Moon Women’s Justin Pittney

Posted on:

Moon Women seemed to mysteriously pop up in Philly’s music scene with some quality shows and an eye-catching music video for a wickedly kick-ass track in “Listen Closely”. It was followed by a self-released cassingle (a word that we get a kick out of saying and hearing every time), but no digital format posted on the usual sites to be streamed or shared. While this may sound all gimmicky at first, we soon learned from our recent interview with lead man Justin Pittney that things simply just happen with Moon Women, and it’s probably best not to over-think anything that they do. Well, this “formula” of having no formula is working quite nicely for the shadowy post-punk trio who will be joining Black Lips and Vivian Girls tonight in DC at The Black Cat and tomorrow night in Philly for a hometown throwdown at The Troc. But before all this fun goes down, Pittney was nice enough to answer our interview questions and share some little known facts about Moon Women HERE.

Scoot Inn Japan Benefit 4/9 w/The Boxing Lesson, One Step Program, Lean Hounds, and more…

The Scoot Inn will be packed with local bands this Saturday night (4/9), all to benefit the people of Japan…The Boxing Lesson, One Step Program, Lean Hounds (above) and more will take the stage. Be sure to go check out One Step Program, whose track "Bad Spaceman" is my own all-time favorite profanity-laced boasting track narrated by an astronaut – bar none. How often can you hear that live AND help people?

Univox Headline Early Show at KFN April 8

Posted on:

Call me a school girl but Univox makes me giddy. Their contorted, spastic noise always excites me so, and whenever there’s a chance to catch the Philly act in action, like tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, I jump on it like a starving cheetah (OK, maybe more like a hungry rat). Outside of their live grinds, Whether I’m spinning their latest EP, Conan, which features the smashing "Conan" from their self-titled debut on ROIR, a sweet Golden Ages remix of the song, and the non-album, home-recorded track "Philadelphia Red Clay, 1945", playing their in-studio acoustic performance last Wednesday at YNot Radio, or checking out UNIVOX TV on their Tumblr page (they just posted Episode 6), it goes without saying you should follow my lead. And while you’re at it, snag the new album, Black Shark from the North Carolina indie three-piece Hammer No More the Fingers, and educate yourself on the DC/Brooklyn quintet Deleted Scenes, both billed for tonight’s show. Power Animal Cancel Tomorrow Night’s Appearance at First Unitarian Chapel & Share New Fan Music Video!

Posted on:

Unfortunately, Power Animal had to cancel their appearance at tomorrow night’s sold out show with David Liebe Harte (Tim & Eric Awesome Show) in the First Unitarian Chapel. Power Animal mastermind Keith Hampson was hospitalized last night with a rare form of strep throat. We’re sending him good vibes for a speedy recovery. We’d also like to share with you a new fan music video (below) for the track “Empty Parking Lot, Scary Dog, Snowing” from 2010’s People Songs that was made by Media Art Production from Australia. Andrew Keller’s Snow Caps will be taking Power Animal’s place on the bill. – The Deli Staff
