CD of the Month: Cross Record

Posted on:

The debut album from Emily Cross (aka Cross Record) is as its title states a Magnetic Current. This is a collection of gentle composed and purred home recorded lullabies that conjure images of equal parts Mazzy Star, Bjork, and St. Vincent. When she urges to "feel it in your bones" in "Shark In The Ocean" I actually do feel it. Musically, this album combines lo-fi electronics, echoing bedroom recordings, and layered acoustic rhythms. In recording these seven intimate tracks Emily enlisted the help of Ben Babbitt on several of them and Douglas Tesnow on Clarinet for for two of them. When all of the parts are working together on a track like "Dark Before Light" the result is truly "Magnetic". The melody swirls and chases you around the room. There are big things ahead for this young musician.

Magnetic Current is her debut album and it will be released on April 19th by Another New Calligraphy. The release show for the album will be on April 23rd at Saki record store on Fullerton.

NYC Artists on the rise: Zula, Live at Spike Hill on May 7

Posted on:

Zula is a state of musical mind expanding pop. This Brooklyn quartet was born when cousins Henry and Nate Terepka joined forces with Mike Lawless and Zach Nicita to create a fresh Indie music style. Tuesday, April 5th marked the premiere of their debut EP "Crescent Intake Session" – stream it here. The EP romps through a velvet, synth, pop-jam band journey into the ether. The first track "Grind" breaks you into the head trip with typical Indie beats, then surprisingly takes a turn into a new soundscape. By the time you get into "Grind is a shuttle" there are elements of a Radiohead exploration occurring. Zula is going beyond your typical Indie synth band and tripping into the nether regions of amazing tunes not of this world. They play May 7 at Spike Hill. – Michele McMannon

Best of NYC #96b: Kordan temporarily on a hiatus

Posted on:

Kordan‘s shoegaze-electro sound with synths and bleak soundscapes, first received attention and acclaim from Cut Copy, who chose them to open for tours across North America in 2008. Since then, they’ve played with The Drums and dream pop aces The Mary Onettes, gaining a steady following. Their debut album "The Longing" foretells a broken love story in the hazy metropolis of Tokyo, circa 2036. The story is told over post-punk rhythms that evoke haunting imagery and macabre overtones a la The Cure and Bauhaus, as well as waves of guitar distortion and pulsating beats to reflect energy and light in the style of My Bloody Valentine. We heard rumors that the band is temporarily on a hiatus, although band leader Arthur Eisele is still very active in the NYC scene as a DJ and remixer – RCRD LBL premiered his remix of Sacramento based Sister Crayon‘s "I’m Still the Same Person" on April 4. The band shared the 96th place in The Deli’s Best of NYC Emerging Artists Poll 2010 with Taurus and Forgetters.

What’s This?: Ghost/Light

Posted on:

Multi-instrumentalist Barrett Lindgren records under the moniker Ghost/Light. Honestly, he’s probably the guy in drunken late night jam sessions who can grab any instrument inspiring others to join in. On New Beast, Lindgren creates some emotive, lush orchestral folk/pop while impressively playing the banjo, guitar, ukulele, bass, drums and percussion, keyboard, glockenspiel, chord organ, synthesizer, and mandolin on the album. His melodies and effortless lyrics that seem to strangely roll off the tongue are also strong enough to captivate listeners while simply being backed by an acoustic guitar. Luckily, through the power of studio magic, we can experience fleshed out versions of his compositions. I also dig Lindgren’s choice of Slutever‘s "So Prone" for a cover. You can catch him twice this week if you choose to do so or happen to be busy on one of these nights because Ghost/Light will be at Danger Danger Gallery with Curious Buddies and K Records’ the Curious Mystery this evening and at PhilaMOCA this Friday. – H.M. Robotanists’ Music Video for “On/Off The Ledge”

Posted on:

The soaring melodic sounds of indie-pop quartet Robatanists are both fun and meaningful, danceable but headphone material as well. Riding the wave of the electro trend, they manage not to overdo it like a lot of these types do. Their third album, Plans In Progress, has an overall light and pretty feel, with cascading beats, airy guitars, and heart-heavy vocals. The dreamy and nostalgic track "The Ghost You’re Haunting" has a similar feel to Yeah Yeah Yeah’s "Cheated Hearts", with fading chants in the background, fluttering guitar reverbs, and an impressive showcase of Ellquist’s vocals during the bridge. Their single "On/Off The Ledge" is a bit darker and progressive, and the music video is a visual mind blow. Set atop a Los Angeles rooftop, the elements of the video are Warhol-esque, as some bright pops of color and art are thrown in with the party scene captured. Robotanists set themselves apart from most bands, keeping an upbeat and interesting style at the same time as being deep and sensual.

Upcoming shows: April 13th @ The Satellite, April 27th @ The Troubador, and April 27th @ The Cabana Club.

***For those who like: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Feist, Florence and The Machine, The XX.

Capillary Action CD Release Party at JB’s April 10

Posted on:

Avant-prog outfit Capillary Action will be celebrating their new self-released album (via the band’s own label Natural Selection) Capsized at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Johnathan Pfeffer along with his current lineup of conspirators that consists of Julian Chin (accordion), John DeHaven (trumpet), Colin Hacklander (drums) and Mike Harrist (bass) push the boundaries of what you’d expect from an “indie band” these days, and on their latest effort, the band delves into the world of free jazz coupled with fleeting moments of pop melodies. This combination certainly sets listeners up for plenty of surprises. The travelling circus of noisemakers will be taking the madness on the road throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada before heading to Europe for festival season and other club dates so this will be your last chance to see them for awhile. Scott Churchman will also be opening with his brand of disturbingly spooky folk to help set the mood for the strange as well as DC’s experimental folk act Hume. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Kuf Knotz & The Spinning Leaves at Kimmel Center April 9

Posted on:

Randomly ran into Kuf Knotz last night at a jam session put together by his guitarist Tom Copson, Jr. at Lickety Split. It was a fun evening with different people grabbing the mic to lay down a verse or two. Kuf told me about a FREE performance that he will be doing tonight at the Kimmel Center with The Spinning Leaves. If you’ve had a chance to walk by the Kimmel Center lately, you probably noticed that they recreated the base of the Eiffel Tower with lights in their front lobby. It looks pretty dope. Well, Kuf Knotz and The Spinning Leaves will have that beautiful setting as a background for their performance this evening. I suggest any fans of either acts bring their cameras because it should make for some sweet pics. I couldn’t find any details about the event anywhere on the Kimmel Center’s website, but it’s apparently going down. I love seeing shows in different rooms and unique settings. I thought that you might really enjoy this one. Kimmel Center (Front Lobby), 260 S. Broad St., 10pm, FREE, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

A Night of Record Releases at JB’s April 9

Posted on:

Tonight’s show is a rare occasion at Johnny Brenda’s because it will be a record release party for all four acts on the bill. That’s a boatload full of new releases in one night. But anchoring the evening will be Josh Britton’s Psalmships. The former front man of Sweetheart Parade has been mapping out his own journey in the solace of his own home. However, he has enlisted the help of Liz Fullerton on his latest adventure to add even more layers of haunting and longing to his “ghost folk” project whose songs already seem perfect for drinking whisky alone in a dark room full of heartbreak. Britton will be celebrating his split release “Anchored to Oak” with buddy Michael Batchelor who fronts Kettle Pot Black as well as singer-songwriters David Janes and Brian Flanagan (former drummer of Headsoup). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Birthday Bash at The Bookspace April 9

Posted on:

When most people turn 21 they have a gathering among friends at several bars, dance at some clubs, and have a night of plentiful libations. But when you’re friends with bands in the local music community like Stella Sima is, it just makes sense to pack in some of your favorites in a DIY space to celebrate the night away. The Homophones will be taking time from the studio where they’ve been working on their first album as a solidified band. They’ll be filling the evening with plenty of balloon fun, slick dance moves, and their unique brand of happy melancholy. TJ Kong and The Atomic Bomb will also be bringing their recently unveiled dirty mixes from their upcoming album to life on this bill full of local buddies. And since El Fuego just hit the studio to finish up work on a new EP, they should have some scorching new material as well. El Fuego’s jokester Joe Reno will be pulling double duty tonight when he joins Julia Rainer in jamming out as part of their shredding blues rock outfit Flamingo. The band Headshop will be a merging of Illipsis and The Great Vibration while Mountjoy will bring it home with songs from their debut release You Keep Me. So the entertainment is covered for the evening. Now it’s up to you to bring some alcoholic beverages, a little donation, and plenty of good vibes for the birthday girl (and a gift wouldn’t hurt either). The Bookspace, (Please contact one of the acts for details.), 8pm, $5 donation, All Ages (Photo by Chris Blasucci) – Bill McThrill
