Creepoid and Brown Recluse Celebrating Record Store Day at Main Street Music!

Posted on:

We don’t normally make it to Manayunk to party. How the hell do you get home after the bars close? Well, we just found a reason to come up this Saturday afternoon. Creepoid just emailed us that they’ll be performing a free show at Main Street Music with local indie pop masters Slumberland’s Brown Recluse and Cabin Dogs. Music starts at 1:30pm with Cabin Dogs, Creepoid at 3pm, and Brown Recluse at 4pm. There will also be adult beverages and tomato pie while supplies last. And definitely plenty of time to catch a train home, but stranger things have happened. – The Deli Staff

Jen Hirsh’s Myself in Two – April 18th at The Hotel Cafe

Posted on:

Jen Hirsh’s album Myself in Two is an interesting collection of songs from this self-described pop vocalist. It’s not the fodder of convoluted artistic expression from artists like Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap or the syrup coated melodies of Ingrid Michaelson or Hayley Sales. Granted there are more musical cues from the later, but producer Max Coane (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin) and Hirsh decided these songs were more than a vessel for record sales and radio play. "Scissors and Soap" is a haunting song that speaks to saying goodbye while "The Better Half" balances things out, its message about never wanting to leave – and its hook might not leave your ears either. Things close with "Faster", a song you could picture Andrew McMahon sing, but Hirsh makes it her with sweetly conservative vocals over a more rocking arrangement than the majority of her guitar and piano laden album.

Jen Hirsh will be playing The Hotel Cafe on April 18th.

TV on The Radio and Vivian Girls new releases out today

Posted on:

As you may know we mostly focus on emerging NYC bands here at The Deli but… as every single music blog in the world is talking about these two releases, it’s our duty to let you know about it – although you already know about it so it’s kind of pointless. But here you go! You can stream TVOTR’s full album (which is also a film) here, and Vivian Girls’ new release here.

Miwa Gemini announces third album + east coast tour

Posted on:

In Miwa Gemini‘s music we hear elements as disparate as the stylized, intense atmospheres of The Doors, Chris Garneau’s playful, whispered pop experiments, and late Tom Waits’ decadent sonic carnival. The female element of Miwa’s delicate, magical soprano defies all comparisons, contributing to a sound that’s quite unique in today’s overcrowded music scene. The NYC based artists will be releasing her third full length album, "Fantastic Lies of Grizzly Rose", on May 31, and tour the East coast in June.

Video Feature: Daddy Long Legs – Live at Bowery Electric on April 14

Posted on:

Hands down, Brian Hurd (aka Daddy Long Legs) is the best blues harmonica player this writer has ever seen or heard. His playing is so pummeling and soulful it just saws you in half. In this first of a multi-part video series, Brian discusses his history, and plays a stripped-down rail-riding Guthrie-esque set at Guvnor’s Vintage Thrift store in Park Slope. The series’ 2nd episode will be filmed on Thursday 04.14 at Bowery Electric, where he’ll surround himself with a full band that sounds as if it stumbled out of CBGB’s in its heyday. Most importantly, the band will allow Brian to ditch the guitar, two-hand that harp, and rip the roof clean off. Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery at 2nd St. Thursday 4/ 14 @ 9pm. – See the video and interview with Brian Hurd here.

The Deli Presents Rock to the Future Benefit Shows!

Posted on:

Just wanted to give you a heads up and to share some brighter news with you on this dreary day. The Deli Magazine will be presenting two benefit shows for Rock to the Future on Saturday, April 30 at Danger Danger Gallery with Power Animal, Algernon Cadwallader, Hop Along, and Conversations with Enemies and on Saturday, May 14 at Circle of Hope with K Records’ Jason Anderson, Joe Jack Talcum (The Dead Milkmen), When I Was 12, Ghost/Light, and The Chelsea Kills!

If you aren’t already familiar with the organization, Rock to the Future combines and provides an afterschool music education and youth development program at no cost to students. It is the only program of its kind in the city. It is open to all Philadelphia students ages 9-14. The program focuses on incorporating music education with academics to create success in school and in life by improving cognitive development, learning capacity, socialization skills, self-esteem and creative thinking. Students learn to play an instrument – their choice of guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals or keyboards – and also receive homework help. Please come out and support a worthwhile program. Help keep Philly’s proud music tradition alive while saving the future of our community. We already know that our government won’t so now it is up to us! Much love! – The Deli Staff
