The latest addition to the Small Chicago project comes from The Henhouse Prowlers. They are well established in the bluegrass community and delivered a great performance.
Bern & The Brights double release show on record store day
Saturday, April 16th (Record Store Day) NJ based Bern & The Brights will celebrate the release of their "Starchild" 7-Inch in Hoboken in the afternoon aat the Tunes record store and later at 8.30PM at Maxwell’s. “Starchild” and “Lost in the Sea”, included in this release, according to the band "go together like peas and carrots, both sonically and thematically." […] "The expansive musical expression of these two songs is our offering of a hopefulness, an airiness of soul, a spark of inspiration, and a reminder that the answer is in the sunset. Keep riding toward it with your stereo blasting, and in that bliss is everything—the sour, the sweet, the poetry, and the party. We are a group of individuals who process life through music and have a relentless, stubborn, and compulsive need to create and share our music with as many people as we can. […] Our aim, with every musical noise that we conjure, is to make hearts burst, faces melt, mouths kiss, and bodies move. In short, we are here to bring you an emotional conglomerate including our love, and to win your heart forevermore. And our fans have ours." – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here – The NYC Open Blog is powered by The Music Building).

Adventures! With Might
A Deli Portland favourite (Artist of the Month a couple months back), and all out sexily dreamy duo, Adventures! With Might release their latest piece of glorious action this Friday (that’s tonight!) at Backspace. The self-titled full length out on the awesome analogue advocates, Apes Tapes, is sopping with the wet synthesizers of decades gone past – it’s like you dragged the glitzed keyboards of 1985 through the guttural amplification of 1993, borrowed a Price-affected whisper falsetto, borrowed a bassline from your most recent awesome night in bed, and shook it up with the hormones of a roomful of 15 year old boys who might actually know what they’re doing. There’s a lot there, isn’t there? See it live. Try not to lose it. No no. Just lose it!

Gang Gang Dance release 1st record under 4AD. Release show at Music Hall or W’burg on May 4th.
NYC’s Gang Gang Dance have been around for 10 years now, and to their credit they have always followed a very personal artistic path outside commercial compromises. The band’s sound is decidedly electronic, corageously audacious, and heavily influenced by oriental music, mostly because of lead singer Lizzi Bougatsos’ particular inclination for Arabic sounding melodies. The band is about to release their 5th studio album entitled "Eye Contact", their 1st one on legendary label 4AD, which released many fantastic records by similarly esoteric bands like Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. The CD’s release party will be at The Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 4th. Watch the video for ‘Eye Contact’ track "Mindkilla" here.
Last Minute Plans: Tim Larson and The Owner/Operators @ Beat Kitchen
Tonight (4/15) at The Beat Kitchen Tim Larson and The Owner/Operators celebrate the release of their new album, A New Deal. This is the band’s first album in four years and it finds these folk and country tinged musicians on top of their game. What I like about Tim Larson is they way he tells a story. On A New Deal he draws from current and very relevant subject to tell the story of Chicago right now. "Own To Rent" kicks off the album with a tale of hard times and the album continues on from there.
Tim Larson and The Owner/Operators (4/15) and performing tonight at Beat Kitchen with Ohio’s Wolf Ram Heart.
Love Story In Blood Red
This ep was released by Rock Proper last month and features one of my favorite weekend songs. "What So Special" perfectly captures that lazy feeling you get when you know it is ok to relax, but you still feel like you should be doing something. Love Story In Blood Red is mainly the work of Jason Frederick and these song span over a decade in time., but still feel fresh and inspired.
You can down the entire ep "Hot Cha" from Love Story In Blood Red and Rock Proper here.
NYC Artists on the rise: Zachary Cale’s CD release party at Union Hall on April 23.
Louisiana-born, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Zachary Cale is gearing up for the late May release of his third record, "Noise of Welcome", on Brooklyn-based All Hands Electric. The new album is the follow up to Cale’s 2008 "Walking Papers". To celebrate the vinyl release of the new record, Zach will be performing with his full band next Saturday, 4/23 at 11PM at Union Hall in Brooklyn before he embarks on a national tour in mid-May with D. Charles Speer & The Helix.
JEFF, HUNX, CLAMS, CREAM
SOME REAL TALK: This has got to be the hottest bill Nashville has seen this whole year, and we seriously thank Nashvilles Dead for putting it together…But if you don’t find the prospect of Shannon & The Clams, Hunx & His Punx, JEFF the Brotherhood, and Heavy Cream all crammed into The End like sardines to play a show together to be one of the most appealing things ever, then you should probably go do something like watch a live taping of Jeopardy or The News Hour w/ Jim Lehrer. #BORING. If you go to this show and–heaven forbid–you aren’t even remotely entertained by the riduclous hilarity that is going to ensue, then you are a crusty old miser. And Hunx and Shannon probably hate crusty old misers. Regardless, this is the first time Hunx will be coming to Nashville, so we need to show them all a good time. It’s gonna be kooky, clammy, queer, and absolutely WiLd. $7, 18+. Check here for more details and updates and don’t be a crab!–Erin Manning
