Philly Opry Returns w/Birdie Busch & The Silver Ages at JB’s April 22

Posted on:

Local folkster Birdie Busch keeps the tradition of storytelling alive through heartfelt harmonies and honest lines. Still wowing listeners with the depth of last year’s Everyone Will Take You In (Be Frank Records), which she received an Independent Music Award for best college label release (album or EP), Birdie Busch and her band of troubadours’ musical musings possess a sense of closeness or intimacy often lost these days in the anthems of more popular acts like Fleet Foxes or Portland’s Blitzen Trapper. Set to perform tonight at her 2nd Annual Philly Opry, Birdie Busch, with the melodic vocals of “Drunk by Noon” and the lyrical craft of “Trap Door”, will prove to move showgoers in a lasting and emotive way. She’ll be joined this evening by Brooklyn’s The Deliberators and The Silver Ages (a local choral group made up of some of Philly’s finest indie rock/pop musicians). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Dianca Potts

Ducktails play 285 Kent in Williamsburg on Saturday April 22.

Ducktails (brainchild of guitarist Matt Mondanile) deserve more credit than just the "lo-fi" or "chill wave" genre branding. While the home recorded bedroom grainy recordings are obviously there, their songs carry an intense brightness and warmth with them, triggering nostalgia for happy childhood days – maybe that’s the reason of that playful band name… The band will be playing an all ages show at 285 Kent Ave @ South 1st in W’burg on April 22, do not miss.

Thick Shakes — Why Buy the Cow

Thick Shakes make me happy like girls in bobby socks and poodle skirts. Their most recent release, a 7” titled Why Buy the Cow (Aurora 7 Records) is just more of their Farfisa-soaked rave-up jams.

I had the pleasure of attending the release party at TT’s on April 20, which saw them share a stage with Barreracudas and punk rock funny men, Personal & the Pizzas. As one would expect, they focused their set on the 3 tracks on the disc. They played all three beautifully, but the stand-out to me is the high voltage Banned from the Laundromat which is both silly confessional and get down and do the twist music. The chorus in Go Back to New York  deserves a full sing along and the bouncing of that floor tom during the verses definitely makes head bobbing mandatory. Neighbor’s Goods has such a Nancy Sinatra-meets-Coachwhips quality that’s fantastic as well. It’s a lovely little collection of smartly written rockin’ dance tunes and is available at Aurora 7 Records or is available digitally for download via the Thick Shakes’ bandcamp.

NYC Artists on the rise: Jump into the Gospel play Mercury on 04.25

Posted on:

With wide range vocals reminiscent of some Brit bands of the 90s (Primal Scream and happy Monday maybe?), and a growing set of eclectic songs incorporating pop, soul, dance, electro and rock elements, Jump into the Gospel are an up and coming NYC band with a sound that doesn’t go unnoticed. The resulting compound is a lot of fun, in particular when the guys get the chorus just right, like in "Photovoltaic". We recommend you check Jump Into The Gospel live at Mercury Lounge on April 25.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the Ground Up crew who were our September Featured Artist(s) of the Month last year. They had only been performing out for about a year, and were about to release their sixth free mixtape Girls Who Smoke Cigarettes. Well, the boys are back with another FREE mixtape titled Up Late after recently performing on the big stage at the TLA opening for Mac Miller. We’re also happy to see that they’re getting some Philly love from the local hip hop community. On their latest release, Ground Up received contributions from well-respected local emcees Freeway and Peedi Crakk. You can check out and download their smooth, chilled-out track “Wonderful Day” below, which features righteous bro Philly Freezer. You can also get their entire Up Late mixtape for FREE HERE. Enjoy and we hope that you have a WONDERFUL Earth Day! – The Deli Staff

How to Sneak Backstage at Coachella!

Posted on:

This video is HILARIOUS! And you might recognize the cast of local characters who pulled it off. Did you ever wonder how you could sneak backstage at Coachella? Well, here is one way, but we’re guessing that once this footage goes viral, they’ll just have to come up with a new one next year. We just wonder if they shared this method with their pals at Black Cab Sessions. Bravo gentlemen! – The Deli Staff
