Gold Crowns Live w/Tough Shits, The Great Vibration & ‘tine-‘tine at The Station March 26

Posted on:

Tonight’s show at The Station might be the debut performance of the virtually unknown Gold Crowns, but its members have rocked the foundation of Philadelphia before as a part of Dark Horse & the Carousels, Invisible Friends, and Sweatheart for years. And they’re destined to be as rockin’, alcohol-charged, and naughty as the other bands (hopefully). Plus, with a big show that will see them play alongside The Extraordinaires and Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang already on the horizon, it looks like they’re making the rounds with good company. They’ll be joined by long-time friends the Tough Shits, who will be returning to a Philly stage for the first time since November. Rounding out the lineup will be lo-fi South Philly art rockers The Great Vibration and STDiva ‘tine-‘tine. The Station, 1550 McKean St., 9pm, $3 – $5, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Opening Night of “Animal Show” w/Eat Your Birthday Cake and Cow Pals at Pterodactyl March 26

Posted on:

“Animal Show” is Pterodactyl’s fitting yearly art show where a menagerie of beasts become the muses that are used to depict the artists’ projection of myths, fantasies, and ideas. For opening night, the DIY art space has lined-up a 3 ring circus of musicians to heighten the evening’s party. Eat Your Birthday Cake have been working on an album that is set to be unveiled in the spring. They’ve even debuted a lo-fi shoegaze-y sound that can be heard on new material such as “Kathy + Ken”. The Pterodactyl event will be the bands 2nd performance of the day since they’ll also be part of a Jazz Benefit for Japan at Rittenhouse Square’s Church of the Holy Trinity. So today will be a great chance to catch them before they unleash some April Fools at Danger Danger Gallery next week. Also on the “Animal Show” bill will be indie popsters Cow Pals, who recently released a new EP at the beginning of this year called Look Who’s Comin’, and Jersey’s Peanut Butter Lovesicle. Pterodactyl, 3237 Amber St. Box 3 Fifth Floor North, 8pm, Donations, All Ages – Bill McThrill

O’Death is back with new track + tour

Posted on:

Brooklyn-based, “spook-folk” quintet O’Death have put their rowdy, banjo-driven SXSW shows behind them as they continue on a huge US tour in support of their forthcoming album Outside (April 19, Ernest Jenning Record Company). Mark April 15 as that’s the night they will play at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn with Grandchildren. Enjoy the embedded free track from their upcoming album.

Lovett- SXSW Footage

Here is some footage of the Lovett gang at SXSW as they took over the streets of Austin with a parade of musical awesomeness.

Here is another video from their live acoustic performance of "Heartattack" on the back porch of The Ghost Room.

Lovett’s debut album Highway Collections is available now.

Fight From Above new music!

Posted on:

Last we reported on Fight From Above, we weren’t quite sure they were working on new material since the addition of their new guitarist. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that they were secretly toiling away on their upcoming EP, Hermano. They’ll be releasing the Hermano EP and the video for their first single "Tilting at Windmills", Saturday, April 9th at 3303 Sunset Blvd.

You can get a sneak peek at "Tilting at Windmills" via SoundCloud. LA bands always seem to incorporate the warmth of summer and this song is no exception. With its slightly surfy vibe (just needs a pinch more tremolo) and ray-gun lead guitar lines, and a bass break that distinct hints from 90’s alt rock — something the Breeders would be proud of — it sets the pace for a more matured three song offering.

Weekend Warrior, March 25 – March 27

Local romantics Pet Milk are set to open for Costa Rican noise pop Las Robertas. With the quasi-moody diction of “Permanent Vacation” and the heartfelt shreds of “Cherry Outline”, it’s clear why Herbie Shellenberger (Brown Recluse) and his fellow bandmates ( who are made up of members from hometown hardcore outfits Paint It Black and Pink Coffins as well as A Sunny Day in Glasgow) are the perfect premise to Las Robertas’ driving riffs and the garage-y buzz of tracks like “Damn ‘92” and “The Curse”. Leave it to No Wavelength to treat the City of Brotherly Love to Las Robertas’ first ever Philly performance. Pakistani musical gunslingers Sunny Ali and the Kid will be armed with their most enjoyable lo-fi ditties and Try Harder cassettes so dust off your tape player and grab a copy. Also kicking off the evening will be Brooklyn’s Dear Marje. Miss out on this, and you’ll regret it for months! Seriously, we hope to see you there. Belleville Outfit Final Show @ Momo’s 3/26

Posted on:

Ok, this time for real: The Belleville Outfit announced their imminent breakup not so long ago, and tomorrow night (3/26) they’ll play their final show at Momo’s. For almost exactly four years, they’ve been bringing their own stew of folk-jazz-Americana to fans in Austin and beyond; though they will all undoubtedly all continue to create, they will no longer do so as Belleville. So go see them off in style…they’re on at 10, preceded by Joe Moody and King Corduroy, and followed at midnight by Melissa Ludwig.

FREE Moon Women Performance at Digital Ferret March 25

Posted on:

You’ll have your chance to have your eardrums assaulted (in a good way) today when Moon Women perform a FREE super intimate show at Queen Village’s Digital Ferret. It’ll be a nice warm-up for their BIG upcoming show at The Troc with Black Lips and Vivian Girls. But these types of events might be getting easier for the shadowy post-punk trio to handle. Since, in about a year’s time of emerging onto the Philly music scene with their eye-catching video and debut single “Listen Closely”, they’ve already opened for indie legends Buzzcocks and Gang of Four. Maybe you could be one of the few and the proud to someday say, “I remember when I saw them in this tiny little record store.” It is also the record release show for Baltimore dark-wavers Red This Ever, and Japan’s scholarly duo Rose Noire (Darkest Labyrinth) will be joining them. Digital Ferret, 732 S. 4th St., 6pm, FREE, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

NYC female band on the rise: The Bandana Splits

Posted on:

I’m not exactly sure why music writers of both sexes, when covering all female bands, always make sure to point that fact out – I don’t think I’ve ever read or heard the "all dudes band" thing. Maybe because everybody likes gals while only gals (in most cases) like dudes? Admittedly, there are a lot more guys in bands than girls, so an all girl band is kind of rare and therefore exciting. Anyhoo, the purpose of this never ending pointless intro is to introduce you to Dawn Landes‘ new group, called The Bandana Splits. The 3 ladies – who should look into organizing a tour with The Debutante Hour – play charming old timey folky tunes with frequent excursions into doo-wop and 50s pop territory. If vocal harmonies are your thing (they are our thing!) you owe it to yourself to listen to this band.

Salem’s Check Yo Ponytail Mixtape

Posted on:

Salem is heading to LA next week to make their first headlining appearance as part of Check Yo Ponytail 2. To build the hype out there they have released a mixtape called Mother Always. It takes a dark look at remixing and reworking some popular tracks including Smashing Pumpkins and Cam’ron.

Also performing at Check Yo Ponytail 2 on March 29th will be Chicago’s Gatekeeper, Light Asylum, The Present Moment, and Killing Spree DJ’s.
