Where Is My Mind?: Nick Millevoi

Posted on:

“Philly guy Nick Millevoi always seems to be in the middle of something interesting – saw him do a lovely solo show a couple weeks ago.” That was a quote from our interview with Notekillers’ David First when we picked his brain about whom he was currently into at the time. How true that statement turned out to be! I had already heard of Millevoi from his work with Make A Rising (who were actually The Deli Philly’s first Featured Artist(s) of the Month). He’s working on a new project with trombonist Dan Blacksberg as the duo Archer Spade and still pushing the boundaries of improvisation with his avant-garde punk-jazz trio Many Arms (Engine Records, Majmua Music). Well, he also has his new solo album of 12-string guitar compositions coming out in April titled Black Figure of a Bird. The 6-song EP will be released by DC’s New Atlantis Records and Sunmagi Records as the first of a series of three collaborative releases which also includes efforts from Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink, and Jason Ajemian. Black Figure of a Bird really spotlights this shredder and master craftsman making a statement while finding his own sound. He’s having his CD release party this Thursday, March 31 at The Marvelous. We had a chance to catch up Millevoi to talk shop and the absurd (or is it?). Find out why he thinks there is a very good chance we’ll have more hard proof in the next few years that aliens have lived among us (if they aren’t still living with us now), what cover song guided him down the path to his obsession with the guitar, why he thinks The Edge is the most overrated guitarist in music history, and much, much more HERE.

The Diamond Light residency @ Bardot Sundays

Posted on:

If you spend any time bouncing around the local venues of Hollywood or Silverlake, then you’ve probably seen The Diamond Light play once or twice. They’ve got a pretty decent buzz going on in the music scene of Los Angeles. They put on a hell of a live show, the kind that even if you haven’t heard them before, you’ll leave the bar knowing their name. Their heavy blues and southern-infused rock ‘n’ roll will rattle the walls and clear the whiskey bottles off of the shelves, and leave you waking up in the morning with a your ears ringing and a massive hangover. Just the way we like it.

The Diamond Light will have an April residency at Bardot for Camerata Sundays.

New Releases from Slutever and Hezekiah Jones Drop Today!

Posted on:

Slutever’s Pretend to Be Nice and Hezekiah JonesHave You Seen Our New Fort? are two albums that officially drop today and that we highly recommend for you to grab. The latest effort from much-buzzed-about female duo Slutever delivers with brash, punchy tunes full of pop hooks and endearing yet in your face lyrics and vocals. The maturity in the production of Pretend to Be Nice is certainly a step up from the raw-bones recordings of their debut Sorry, I’m Not Sorry making them really another young, promising band to watch on our beloved local music scene. And you should already know Hezekiah Jones a.k.a. Raphael Cutrufello. He has been influencing Philly’s folk/singer-songwriter scene for years now, and with his new full-length, you find the local music community heavily influencing his work – particularly the album’s producer Andrew Lipke. Sonically, there is less “folk music for the end of the world”, and more songs for the joy of living on New Fort. We recently interviewed Cutrufello and Pepe Jones a.k.a. Phil D’Agostino before their early album release party last month at World Café Live and chatted a little bit about their latest release, which you can read HERE. You can purchase Slutever’s Pretend to Be Nice via Bantic Media and Hezekiah Jones’ Have You Seen Our New Fort? via Yer Bird Records. Below are tracks from both albums for you to check out. Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

NYC artists on the rise: Bosco Del Rey tours with Sleigh Bells + releases debut CD

Posted on:

The paradoxical idea of mixing electronic music with good old Rock’n’Roll is not new (I think Suicide pretty much coined it in the early 70s), but definitely interesting and under-explored. Mad Decent Records signee, New Jersey based Bosco Delrey blends the two genres to create a rather infectious signature combination of electro-psychedelia and rockabilly styles. After catching the attention of The Beastie Boys (who worked on 2 remixes of one of his songs) and playing several dates with Major Lazer, Bosco just announced a tour with sublime NYC electro-punk rippers Sleigh Bells. His album "Everybody Wah" is scheduled to be released on April 26. Here’s the video of the song Space Junkie.

Best of NYC #99a: Diamond Doves – currently on a west coast tour

Posted on:

We keep covering the 107 artists that made our Best of NYC Emerging Artists 2010 list – Diamond Doves placed at #99.

For the last five years, the three members of Diamond Doves have been Dearland, writing and touring with Elvis Perkins.  Their “breakaway” enterprise has a similar folksy Americana feel as their past work, yet stands alone, exuding boundless energy, and their revolving cast of horn, fiddle, and keyboard players creates a chaotic sound you can’t help but dance and sweat to.  After seeing their show, the legendary Carl Newman (The New Pornographers) tweeted that they were “The Band to [Elvis’s] Dylan.”  Their song, “You’re Not The One That I Love,” recounts the classic rock ‘n roll road story, the realization that the person you’re with may have been fun to sleep with, but in the light of day you’d rather be alone.  The tale is told over a jangling guitar-driven rhythm, the fiddle highlighting classic southern rock overtones. The single "Club Night", on the other hand, shows a desire to overcome the boundaries of roots music, experimenting with rhythms, sonics, melodies, and vocals in an avant-pop direction reminiscent of MGMT. We’ll call that a successful experiment. – Katie Bennet
