Off of Sixth: SXSW @ The Ghost Room

Posted on:

Whether or not I have a vested interest (I do, I do, very much so), it’s still valid to say one of the best upcoming early-early SXSW lineups is happening at the Ghost Room, Tuesday, 3/15, hosted by Frog Music Licensing. A grand total of thirteen Austin bands are on the bill, starting at 4:00 pm and running all night long…and like many of the off-Sixth happenings we’ve been talking about, this one’s absolutely FREE, no badge, no wristband, no problem.

Other Mountains debut album “Fernweh”

Posted on:

Other Mountains new full-length album "Fernweh" really hit home for me. Lately I’ve had this nostalgia for the kind of music I grew up with, back to the days of Saosin or adolescent Bright Eyes. The kind of music some referred to as…dare I say it…"emo". I never understood why  people took that word as a bad thing…I mean, if music isn’t composed of pure emotion, then what is it? Anyway, the songs scrape the deeper parts of the heart and soul, in ways I can only compare to that of Sigur Ros or Explosions In The Sky. The album starts with twinkling keys and climbing violins, throwing you straight into the overall mesmerizing feel of the record. The faster paced "Mure" ends with crashing cymbals and the instruments seem to scream in your face. The falsettos foating over haunting piano keys in "Swann" create a dark, eerie element. Their music puts you into a sort of trance, so it’s easy not to notice the lyrics right away. But the closer you pay attention, the more you notice how well-written the words are…in an almost Shakespearean way. "Say aloud before you go: ‘Oh, the heart could it think, it would surely stop beating. And the mind could it feel, it would surely stop reeling.’ I’m yours. I’m still yours. You are heaven. You, our heaven. There is life before death, I know." make up the track "Hopscotch".

Matthew Oden and Marc Kohlbry said a lot of the inspiration for the record came from their travels to Japan. They are currently offering a free download of their "Japan EP" on their website, before the release of "Fernweh" on March 14th. You can also listen to the first track, "Do They Have Souls? I Don’t Know" here. As Kohlbry told us, "After failed relationships, lots of beer at El Prado in Silverlake, and the accidental discovery of Matt’s voice in a church at 3am with a bottle of whiskey, we decided to make a record in a final attempt at feeling. Not sure if it worked." Well, it worked for me.

Magic Magic Announces Three New Releases and Spring Tour

Posted on:

Magic Magic

Magic Magic has quietly released a plethora of new woozy, stoner dream pop over the past four months. The prodigious Boston five-piece has written and recorded two full-lengths and one EP respectively during this time: Whatever Happened to Monday Nights?, LP II and TV Life EP.  All releases are available digitally – stream them here. With over thirty tracks between the releases, Magic Magic will certainly have lots of new material for their upcoming March tour.

Magic Magic’s latest full-length, LP II, is their third release and marked with the kind of maturity that comes from a deeper understanding of one’s self and the passage from teen to the world of a twenty-something. Not quite old enough to be world weary, but just the right age to pile youthful experience, vigor and a scrappy je ne sais quois into ten tracks.

LP II strikes with jangly guitar hooks and duel drummers Dylan Gough and Mike Hadly who punctuate delicate lead vocals and beat at the smoldering, hazy layers of sound. At its quieter moments, like "In the Lounge", the album smartly pits soft, yearning pleas for mercy against a minimalist, shadowy soundscape. It’s a testament to Magic Magic’s knack for building immediately appealing, emotionally raw and powerful songs.

Whatever Happened to Monday Nights? was recorded at the end of last year in the confines of the a rehearsal space and a cold, unforgiving winter. Escaping a winter of record breaking Boston snow in favor of Nick Sera’s balmy bass grooves and Brendan Hughes’ bright guitar riffs on "Been Feelin’ Alright", the album as a whole flourishes with a warm, breezy easiness.

The newest addition to the discography is TV Life EP,  a three-track insight into the next full-length by the same name. It is currently being written and recorded in their rehearsal space. "Afterglow" is a particularly promising start with a ruckus swell of frenetic guitars and punchy vocals that melts into a slow, pounding finish. The TV Life LP is set to be released in late spring/ early summer of this year.

At the beginning of March, the five-piece will climb into their camper and start their first real tour outside of Europe. An eight-day Midwestern tour will be their brief introduction to the sprawling American highway system and new audiences in the Great Plains. Tour dates are listed below.

Upcoming Tour Dates:
3/12: Pianos (New York, NY)
3/13: Danger Danger Gallery (Philadelphia, PA)
3/14: Marburg Collective (Cincinatti, OH)
3/15: Beauty Bar (Chicago, IL)
3/16: Upstairs Lounge (St. Louis, MO)
3/17: The Bishop (Bloomington, IN)
3/19: The Elevens (Northampton, MA)

The Deli’s Featured Artist of the Month: Mrs. Pain

Posted on:

Mrs. Pain is the moniker used by Kelley Cosgrove, but as you will soon learn (unfortunately), it has taken on multiple meanings of its own. The uninhibited, photogenic singer-songwriter seems to absorb her environment like a sponge while mixing her own experiences and sense of humor to conjure up tunes that can take you away to far off places or soberly put the world into a unique perspective. From her hospital bed where she has spent the last few weeks, she contemplates the forces that have led her on this strange often painful journey that we are sure has plenty more to unfold for all to see. You can check out our interview with Mrs. Pain here.

Gypsy Death and You Headline All Ages Show at The Fire March 9

Posted on:

You probably already know about Drexel’s Music Industry Program helping to prep young, enthusiastic minds on how to deal with the shit storm that is the music industry. The students are working hard (from what I hear) and creating a college experience that’s probably more interesting than the education that I received. It’s also nice to see that Bantic Media, Drexel’s music marketing company run by students, is backing some of their own classmates who are making impressions of their own on the local music community like Slutever and When I Was 12. Well, tonight you can catch another Drexel act that has been striking my fancy. Gypsy Death and You, the duo of Emily Cahill and Alex Wilson, have been making some enjoyable “dreamy-yet-edgy indie rock” that has me taking a second and third listen. Check out tracks like “Sound of the Sun” and “Crocus” for yourself! And go see them when they headline an early all ages show at The Fire this evening. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $7, All Ages – H.M Kauffman

Invictus Picks — Broadcaster — “Passerby”

Broadcaster

This weeks Invictus Pick are my buddies Broadcaster from Providence RI. You see, me and frontman Chris McTernan grew up in the same town. Did we hang out? No. Somehow, I got lumped in with the cheerleaders and he was in band. Thats how it goes, right? But one thing I think it’s safe to assume is that while we were in junior high we most likely listened to similar music. I can hear Built To Spill influences with this track "Passerby" off their new EP. It was nice to run into him again, years later, when Im pretty sure I booked his band whithout realizing he was in it.  That’s how I met Moe Sherzai (Bitch Brothers) too. Its never a dull moment when these guys play, I clearly remember McTernan and crew tearing up The Hotel Vernon in Kelley Sq with a badass cover of Iggy Pop’s "Search and Destroy" and now my girl Rainy Logan (Eye Witness)  has taken over drumming duties. I’m definitely excited to see these guys play soon.

Some of Broadcaster’s influences are: Silkworm, Wipers, Link Wray, Built to Spill, and Swervedriver.

Anni Rossi “Heavy Meadow”

Posted on:

Anni Rossi is returning in May with a new album for 3Syllables called Heavy Meadow. This will be the follow-up to her 2009 full-length debut, Rockwell (4AD). Since that time she has relocated to New York, but is coming back to Chicago on April 14th to perform at The Hideout.

Where Rockwell was primarily a solo effort produced by the legend Steve Albini, Heavy Meadow finds Rossi working with a full band for the first time (including longtime collaborator, drummer Devin Maxwell). The album is much more filled with textures and styles because of that new dynamic. Yet, at the heart is still the talent and imagination of Anni Rossi.
