Nicos Gun Hitting Making Time w/Bikini at Voyeur March 11

Posted on:

Congratulations, you survived another week. It’s Friday, celebrate. Get rad with Making Time and local dance party starters Nicos Gun! Fast paced backbeats and buzzing synth make this four-piece’s onstage antics the quintessential kickoff to a weekend of ragers and rock and roll. Jams like “Modern Cool” channel the funk-tastic bravado of James Murphy (DFA, LCD Soundsystem) while “Dirty Girl” unfolds with a sense of sexy sass reminiscent of Prince or Kevin Barnes’ weirdo alter ego Georgie Fruit. Dance inducing pop that goes down smooth with booze, Nicos Gun will get you sweaty and feeling ultra fab in the Ruby Lounge. Bikini will be headlining the main stage, and Dave P and all his DJ pals will be getting you hyped up with their futuristic sounds. Voyuer, 1221 St. James St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Dianca Potts

Off of Sixth: SXSW @ San Jose w/White Denim, Amy Cook, Dan Dyer…

Posted on:

Overwhelmed yet? It’ll keep coming…then it will pass + we’ll stand around blinking in the mid-March sunshine with a persistent ringing in our ears. And then gear up for 2012. While it’s here, though: our friends at Ultra8201 posted about this, excellent free Thursday lineup at the Mohawk, including Black Joe Lewis & Telekinesis

We’re focused today on one of the perennially under-appreciated events of SX: SXSanJose, in the parking lot of Hotel San Jose on South Congress. The lot will be lined with booths of Austin goodies, the beer will be plentiful, and the stage will feature Vetiver, The Civil Wars, Ruby Jane (Thursday), Amy Cook, Apex Manor, Uh Huh Her (Friday), Menomena, White Denim (above), and Dan Dyer (Saturday), and much much more.   Full lineup is always seems to be one of the trickier ones to find, but it’s right here

Creepoid Open for Merge Artists The Love Language and Telekinesis at JB’s March 11

Posted on:

Creepoid are gearing up to play a serious amount of shows at SXSW where they will be opening up for some big names and probably building their current buzz to a national size. It would come as little surprise to see their name show up in a ton of blogs during SXSW frenzy. Hopefully, it will be for their brooding, fuzzy, slow burners like personal standout “See-Through” that sounds like Sparklehorse’s grungy younger brother, and not their punk antics that made their last show impossible to look away from in a car crash sort of way. Tonight they are revving their engines and ironing out their stage banter with a show at Johnny Brenda’s in what will be a send off of the SS Creepoid of sorts. If you haven’t already picked up their debut LP Horse Heaven, do so now and thank us later. They have some nice fresh vinyls waiting to be spun, and you can grab your digital copy too here. Creepoid will be opening up for Merge artists The Love Language, who create refreshing folk-pop, and fellow label mates Telekinesis, whose upbeat indie stylings are extremely catchy without being saccharine sweet. Overall, it is a pretty sweet lineup and perfect way to spend a Friday night. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Adam G.

Conversations With Enemies Open for The Rural Alberta Advantage and Blood Like Mine Open for Zomes at FUC March 11

Posted on:

With some heavy hitters in Toronto’s indie outfit The Rural Alberta Advantage performing downstairs at First Unitarian Church and Baltimore’s Zomes (solo project of former Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne) playing in its Side Chapel, tonight will be business as usual for R5 Productions. Right in their element opening for Rural Alberta Advantage, Conversations With Enemies is a band that’s energetic as they are eclectic, whether their dressed as Rocky Horror and doing the Time Warp, channeling gypsy love tunes involving grave robbery and zombies, or releasing an album with its own graphic novel. Opening for Zomes will be Blood Like Mine, a slightly mysterious collaboration between singer Rosali Middleman and guitarist Geoff Bucknam from Free Energy and Niagara Falls. You may spread yourself thin going from stage to stage, but it might be totally worth it. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St, 8pm, $10/$12, All Ages Bill McThrill

Conversion Party CD release show at Pianos on March 12

Posted on:

Somehow both light and heavy, Conversion Party possess an accessible garagey/alt sound. Like a good boxer, this band is quick on its feet- but also quick with the punch. Songs like "Island Dream" are a clear example of this, the vocals settling on top of driving instrumentals like oil on top of water. Other songs pick a side, like "Awake" (delightfully heavy, but still catchy) and "Ron", which is almost Beulah-esque in its lightness. Originally of New London, Connecticut, some of Conversion Party’s members call Brooklyn home. Their all-ages gig has already passed, but there is still time to catch their 21+ release show at Pianos. Pick up their that record while you’re there, I bet you won’t regret it. – allison levin

Endless Wave Announces the Release of their First LP: Notes from the Compound

Posted on:

Endless Wave

Endless Wave, an indie rock trio based out of Boston known for lush textures, dynamic songwriting, and visceral live performances, have released their first LP, Notes from the Compound. It was the last record produced by Paul Q. Kolderie [Radiohead, Pixies] at the late Camp Street Studios in Cambridge, MA.

The December 2010 closing of Camp Street Studios (formerly Fort Apache Studios) was a major loss to the Boston music community. The studio was seminal in creating signature sounds that helped launch the careers of local giants like the Pixies, Morphine, and Juliana Hatfield.

In support of the release of Notes from the Compound, Endless Wave is poised to make their SXSW debut on Thursday, March 17 in Austin and have the rare opportunity to open for Spectrum April 19 at Church in Boston.

The LP is available digitally for download here. An official pressing from Fort Point Recordings is expected by May with remixes and vinyl to follow.

Weekly Feature: Diehard, Live at Goodbye Blue Monday on 03.25

Posted on:

With a knack for making nostalgia-tinged, popped-out indie rock that’s alternately loud and/or mellow(ish) in all the right places, Diehard offer oft-distorted, yet still somehow pleasantly shiny, guitar rock with male-female vocals. The band’s two EPs — “Oh So Premier,” released early this year, and the just-released “Ultimate Heartthrob” — do a great job of capturing the energy of the quartet’s live show and offer the promise of more goodness to come, in form of a full length the band is currently trying to fund through a Kickstarter campaign. – Read Stereoactive NYC‘s interview with The band here.

Phlying Saucer covers “Firework” By Katy Perry – Free Download

Posted on:

Ah, the cover song. They can breathe life into tired old tracks or expose them to whole new audiences. Browsing BandCamp late one night, I came across LA’s Phlying Saucer and their astute pop punk cover of Katy Perry’s "Firework". I know you may be thinking of the Fearless Records Punk Goes Pop collections, but I swear it’s more charming than that. And, besides, it’s free so what have you got to lose? Throw it on your iPod and feel a little less ashamed because you know every word.

The band’s next show is 3/20 at The Viper Room
