Where to Find Philly Area Acts Down at SXSW!?!

Posted on:

OK – SXSW is absolute chaos, but we wanted to help all those heading down to find some of the rad Philly acts making the trek down to Austin. This is the info that we’ve gathered from the e-mails we received from the bands and the internet. Most of the shows are free, RSVP, or SXSW wristband. Remember to check out what is required for admission for each event. We labeled some of the ones that we definitely knew were FREE. Special thanks to Josa Lazas from Golden Ages who was nice enough to share his personal list of info that he gathered about his SXSW-bound peers! We’ll probably make more edits as the week goes on and things pop up. Feel free to send any tips or let us know if there are any other shows with Philly artists that we might want to add to the list at thedelimagazinephiladelphia@gmail.com. You can check out our whole list here. Cheers! – The Deli Staff

Slang Chickens Go On Mini-tour, Making Pit Stop @ SXSW

Posted on:

Slang Chickens are finally hitting the road, ditching their month-long February residency at The Echo for a mini-tour of the great South West. The LA quartet will be performing two shows at SXSW in Austin, BD Riley’s on March 16th with The Growlers, and the Pinpoint Music Party on March 17th.

Slang Chickens sophomore EP "My Floor" is set to be released this Spring but both the CD and EP can be preordered online here. The opening track for the EP is “My Floor”, a refreshing country spirited and rock ‘n’ roll driven track. Slang Chickens roam in uncharted territory with an original sound sure to rope in the fans.

Grand Palace final show, 3/12/11

Posted on:

Murfreesboro ain’t Nashville, but it has its moments as well as a few hidden gems. Gems like Grand Palace, the tiny record store/recording studio/silkscreen business/low-profile venue that’s been tucked discreetly away on Murfreesboro’s downtown square for just over five years. Sadly, this little music hideaway is splitting up. The printing shop may be headed to Nashville and the recording studio is moving to Chattanooga. The venue, however, is no more.

Not to say it didn’t go out with a bang last weekend with two final shows. Ascent of Everest, The Gold Room and Seafood Hotline played Friday night, while locals The Only Sons and Glossary (whose bass player, Bingham Barnes, co-owns Grand Palace Silkscreen) tore it up on Friday. The shows were fairly hush-hush, Barnes’ Facebook announcement being the extent of the advertising, but a sizeable crowd turned up nevertheless to bid the creaky upstairs venue farewell.

Both groups played extensive sets, starting with The Only Sons whose searing pedal steel filled the room along with Kent Goolsby’s country-soaked licks. Then Glossary finished things off with a colorful southern rock palette. Considering the bassist’s affiliation with Grand Palace and the two Boro-based acts’ growing prominence, it was the perfect way to shut down 128 ½ N. Church Street, and send pieces it off into the great beyond. – Jessica Pace

NYC

Is Foley Stewart the new Jeff Buckley?

Posted on:

We just e-stumbled upon Foley Stewart, a young NYC songwriter who is having a residency at Pianos in April, and we really enjoyed his intimate, intense songs that are in equal parts reminiscent of Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith. We definitely see a lot of potential here, you may want to check this guy out at Pianos at 7 pm on April 7 or one of the following Sundays.

NYC Artists on the rise: Tiny Vitories play SXSW + release debut CD at Pianos on 04.02

Posted on:

Brooklyn based Tiny Victories play an interesting, rich brand of electro-pop. Floating on several layers of synths, electronic sounds, and steady drum patterns, their songs are luscious in the arrangement department and properly structured. The vocals add sobriety to the mix, through minimalistic melodies sung with very little emotion, in the classic "brainy pop" tradition inaugurated by Brian Eno. The band will play a series of shows at SXSW and then come back to NYC to release their debut CD on April 2 at Pianos. Check out the dates here.

Off of Sixth: SXSW @ Lustre Pearl w/Okkervil River, Alpha Rev, Cold War Kids…

The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here! Well, not quite here…SXSW 2011 is in full swing, but music has yet to officially kick off. Still some calm left before the storm – though tomorrow some of the good unofficials really get going, with Art Disaster @ Beauty Bar, SXES @ Thunderbird Coffee, and Frog ML @ The Ghost Room.

Soon we’ll be bringing you reports from the fray…but for now, one last rec for an off-Sixth venue: The Lustre Pearl. It’s tucked away in an odd pocket of real estate south of Cesar Chavez and west of 35 – area is home also to the G’Raj Mahal, worth a peek. The Pearl is hardly a secret – the line tends to be long and the names tend to be large, but it’s a venue worth seeing if you can squeeze your way in.  This year’s performers include Okkervil River, The Black Lips, Dawes, and The Cold War Kids.
