Caitlin Rose’s “Own Side Now” release

Posted on:

As many are already aware, Caitlin Rose’s Own Side Now was just released in the U.S. March 15 after it debuted across the pond, and good lord – you may need a drink after hearing this one. There’s not a trace of fluff in these 10 tracks, though emotion spills over like a shot on the bar as Rose compares horses to lovers and weighs whether it’s better to brave a train wreck love or spend the night alone.

Rose simultaneously looks down her nose at love and won’t say no to it throughout these songs, and the fact that they are lyrically untethered makes for some beautiful lines. “Love is just one more useless thing you don’t need but you don’t throw away” in “Spare Me” may seem jaded, but it sounds good on her. And it doesn’t hurt that the album oozes the influence of Patsy, Loretta – the whole gang – and maintains a sound so vintage it almost plays out in black and white.

Both simplistic and bouncy numbers like the opener “Learnin to Ride” and those with a heavy heart like “Own Side Now” (“It’s not my right to always push you around/I’m on my own side now”) share a spot on the recording and are delivered in vocals that are sweet like honey, pierce like a dog’s bark and cut like a razor’s edge.

Singing about cigarettes and channeling Stevie Nicks come naturally to Rose as well as shown in “Shanghai Cigarettes” and a more countrified version of “That’s Alright,” the beautiful, folky gem from Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage. Those who aren’t interested in Nashville’s roots may not be interested in Own Side Now, which is a salute to more than a couple Country Music Hall of Famers. But Rose paints her own stories over the heritage – stories of a drink, a smoke, the possibility of love – arguably some of the best things in life. – Jessica Pace

Ponytail Release Video Mash-Up of Forthcoming Album “Do Whatever You Want All the Time”

Posted on:

"Baltimore four-piece Ponytail is gearing up to release their third full-length, Do Whatever You Want All the Time, due for release on April 12 on We Are Free. In the meantime, Ponytail member Dustin Wong has compiled yet another fantastic music video of various mash-up clips that go along with portions of each song on the album. Sort of like an album appetizer. The video complements the colorful cover art that was designed by EYE of the Japanese rock band Boredoms." -Courtesy of Big Hassle Media.

Big’n is Back

In May the French Label African Tape will be releasing Big’n’s first new music since 2000. The new Ep will be called Spare The Horse, and feature four new tracks. The tracks were recorded by Greg Norman at Electrical Audio earlier this year. Currently it will only be released as vinyl import, but if you enjoy the spastic sounds of this classic noise markers it will be well worth it.

The French label also release a collection of singles and unreleased tracks by Big’n last month called Dying Breed.

Norwegian Arms Come Out Swinging at JB’s March 17

Posted on:

Philly’s own Norwegian Arms is playing a pretty buzzworthy show tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, where they’ll open for the Baltimore-based, Wham City no-wave breakouts Future Islands. I saw Norwegian Arms at band leader Brendan Mulvihill’s home-base, The Ox, and their freak-folk stylings translated into one frenetic and catchy performance. The intimacy of their recordings is just as super endearing. The aged, home-made sound gives it a fantastic feeling when supporting Mulvihill’s friendly voice that quakes like ancient floorboards. Some of the most enjoyable tracks are the ones released as solo demos on Mulviihill’s blog, which serves as a hub for his many creative endeavors. The tunes recall early Devendra Banhart and K Records cohort, Little Wings, with the addition of some Dodos-esque drumming. Norwegian Arms is set to release a limited pressing of some new recordings wrapped in bio-degradable and extremely eco-friendly packaging (props to Mulvihill & co. for utilizing art to highlight and improve on environmental issues). Dr. Dog‘s Eric Slick will be performing on stage with Norwegian Arms this evening. The show is also rounded out by fellow Phill-ites Club Lyfestile dance squad, who will be doing all they can to get booties-a-shakin’. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Meijin’s SXSW day 1

Posted on:

Technically the second day of SXSW 2011’s music week was my first day (although Tuesday is kind of a half Music day realy), and I certainly made up for lost time. My third SXSW, the festival’s 25th anniversary, I celebrated with eleven bands and a huge dose of venue hopping.

After being rejected by NYC’s Shilpa Ray’s show at the Austin Convention Center (“badges only, no bracelets!” – "WTF?!?"), I meandered down 6th Street to the “British Embassy,” where a Welsh showcase was beginning, and I was privileged to see synth-rockers, We//Are//Animal (top picture ), and dance-y electro-pop trio, Bright Light Bright Light. Only steps away at The Parish were Brooklyn’s quirky alt rock quartet, Black Taxi, and Austin’s synth rockers, The Frontier Brothers, and wacky dance-rockers, Bright Light Social Hour. A long walk to the Buzzbands LA Party and an extended sound check ended in a short sample of orchestral Other Lives.

A coffee break and pedicab ride were followed by Washington D.C.’s indie-pop Jukebox the Ghost at the Empire Automotive Shop. Back to back, I explored LA’s alternative electro-pop/rock foursome, Hell & Lula (picture above), at Emo’s Annex, New York’s retro-rock outfit, Blackbells, at Fado’s, and my favorite new band of the day, Oklahoma City’s hard rock showmen, The Pretty Black Chains (picture below), at the Oklahoma showcase at Friends.

The day came full circle as I was denied entry to The Black Angels and Queens of the Stone Age at La Zona Rosa, but I closed my first Austin night right with the soulful sounds of NY’s Kendra Morris (pictured below, who also played the Deli sponsored Music Tech Mashup Party earlier in the afternoon) at the Scoot Inn before heading home to prepare for an even bigger second day!

Free Restorations Record Release Show at KFN March 17

Posted on:

When members of hardcore outfit Jena Berlin retraced their steps and formed a rustic indie rock band in Restorations, they provided just the right musical backdrop for the raspy, dynamic vocals of singer Jon Loudon. After releasing a 7-inch, a split album with Rosetta, the band has been hard at work on releasing a full-fledged album that they will be releasing on vinyl via Tiny Engines on April 19 and early digitally via iTunes/Bandcamp on March 22. Tonight they’ll be celebrating the upcoming release with a free show at Kung Fu Necktie. The self-titled album was recorded by Algernon Cadwallader’s Joe Reinhart, and mixed at The Headroom by Jonathon Low, who has previously worked with Dr. Dog and mewithoutYou. Joining them on the bill will be buddies The Holy Mess and Gods and Queens. Restorations will also be doing an acoustic set at Grindcore House on March 26. Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 N. Front St., 8pm, Free, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Brief reviews from digital submissions: Bird Dog, Jonka, Medals

Posted on:

Here are 3 reviews from a selection of CDs that were recently submitted here.

“I could spend all night singing this song/I’m searching for reasons to tell you that you should still be mine" are lyrics from Bird Dog’s self-titled EP. They hail from Brooklyn, and their EP is a delicious mix of rock, roots and soul, the kind of music that your ears have been searching for. The music will strike a chord with your soul and the lyrics are intelligently relatable. Bird Dog’s tracks will brighten any rainy day or sustain the light of a sunny day; make no mistake, this is music you do not want to deny yourself the chance to listen to. Bird Dog’s self-titled EP is streaming and available for download here.

Electro-pop power team Jonka’s album "Slow and Steady Wins The Race" (the follow-up album, Pinks and Blues, has yet to be released) is overflowing with fresh synth beats and brilliant vocal harmonies. Jonka’s music mixes together 80s pop and hip-hop, coming up with a nostalgic yet strikingly modern content. The lyrics are stirringly heartfelt; consider these lyrics from the song "Guided By Light," "Get a little bit older, now you think for yourself/Instead of waiting your turn, it’s time to get off the shelf/ Get a little bit wiser, you’ve been kicking around/Instead of kicking your can, you’ve got your feet on the ground." Jonka’s music will make you think, it will make you want to dance, and it somehow makes you want to live a better life, all at the same time.

Medals, with their album "Dancing in Ceremony", are reinventing indie pop. The album began as a new Jaguar Club record (former Jaguar Club members Will Popadic and Yoi Fujita are now Medals) and was inspired by the two’s mutual love for 90s electronica and Blur’s later works. Dancing in Ceremony settled itself somewhere between being a dance floor record and one inspired by the techno giants of the 90s. The album, most of which was recorded in one 10-hour session with Nick Stumpf (of French Kicks), is full of acoustic strumming, bass hooks, distinctive lyrics and scattered beats. Live, Medals is composed of Popadic singing, playing guitar, triggering samples and playing harmonica; Fujita playing bass and playing some keyboards; and longtime friend Nadia Brittingham playing keyboards, singing and playing drums. As they write in their bio, "We’d like to think we are fun but serious, loud and good." Couldn’t have put it better myself. – Leah Tribbett

SXSW Day 0-1: The Lemurs, Black Books, Sahara Smith…

Posted on:

Went out of the gates a little fast on Tuesday night before SXSW music had even officially started, and caught a baker’s dozen of Austin bands at The Ghost Room, running from 4pm until 2 in the morning…opened up with Liars & Saints, and then Royal Forest (above), Leatherbag, Golden Bear, Wiretree, Dan Dyer, Sahara Smith, Cowboy & Indian, Zookeeper, The Lemurs, Sunset, The Great Nostalgic, and Followed by Static.

Pretty phenomenal back to front, but it meant that today, day one of SX, I was taking it slow…in the afternoon I did catch Matt the Electrician playing a benefit show at Guero’s. Many shows here have become spur-of-the-moment benefits as SX reacts to the events in Japan. (Sahara Smith raised $100 for the Red Cross on Tuesday night just by putting out a jar + mentioning it once.) Then snuck out later this evening to see one of my favorite new Austin bands, Black Books, who boast the rarely seen drummer/lead singer, and play a kind of off-kilter dream-pop…their "Maria" lit it up + served as the highlight of my night. On the way home caught Amber Digby, honky-tonky modern country girl from Houston, playing the Continental. And tomorrow back into the madness…

Voxhaul Broadcast debut album drops 3/22 + SXSW shows

 ]

Soul-rock quartet Voxhaul Broadcast has been ruling the L.A. music scene for quite some time now. Their long-awaited debut album "Timing Is Everything" drops March 22nd, packed with a solid lineup of 13 tracks. The lazy guitars wailing in "Junkyard Dog" echo sounds similar to Led Zeppelin, while the track "Steal The Diamonds" is funky with R&B infused rock and a jazzy blues feel. Their live shows are dripping with sexy energy, so if you want to witness a talented rock group setting the stage on fire before they blow up, I suggest checking them out at SXSW

March 17 Filter Cedar Street Courtyard (208 W4th St @ Lavaca) – 1:00pm Austin, TX
