ExportTV from Archie Powell & The Exports
Archie Powell & The Exports are releasing a series of covers this month in video through youtube. The first two covers are "The Ballad of John and Yoko" by The Beatles and Devo’s "Girl U Want". The band is clearly having a good time, but still these are quality covers.
The band is performing at The Viaduct on April 1st with Glittermouse and Republic of Lights, April 8th at Penny Road Pub (South Barrington), and April 15th at The Abbey.
Pinetop Perkins, RIP
Amidst the quiet post-SX recovery the news came through that the great Pinetop Perkins died in his home in Austin. Perkins won multiple grammys for his blues piano work, and played with many of the blues greats throughout his 97 years. He called Austin home for the last seven of those years, and continued to play gigs, including one at Antone’s less than a month ago. He will be remembered with a special blues tribute tonight at Antone’s, lineup TBD.
C. Gibbs is back with a new band: The Droves, record release at The Gutter’s back room on April 2
C. Gibbs has become almost an iconic figure in the Brooklyn scene, playing guitar among others for Modern English and Foetus back in the days, and more recently putting out records solo and with his rootsy band Lucinda Black Bear, which is still active. Here at The Deli we can’t forget that he played our very first mag benefit party in 2004! C. announced today his new project called The Droves and the debut album "Out Of Herself" which will be released officially with a live show in the back room of The Gutter in Brooklyn. Compared to Gibbs’ more recent output this sounds more electric and poppy, in an indie way of course. We detect occasional references to Pavement and Tom Petty.
Will Phalen & Julie Meckler @ Bottom Lounge
Julie Meckler is joining Will Phalen and the Stereo Addicts for a night of music at The Bottom Lounge hosted by the Chicago Acoustic Underground. Above is Julie practicing a new song she is adding to her live shows. It is "La Complainte de la Seine" by German composer Kurt Weill.
Will Phalen & The Stereo Addicts just released a new single called "Home Someday" which is backed with a cover of the Faces tune "Ooh La La".
Also on the bill for March 31st at The Bottom Lounge are Cook County Fair and BJSR. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 8:30pm.

Voxhaul Broadcast tonight 7pm, 3/22 @ Amoeba Music – Free CDs!
If my friend’s Facebook posts and videos were any indication, Voxhaul Broadcast made a splash at SXSW. So much so, in fact, that Huffington Post called them one of the top SXSW bands you haven’t heard of yet…well if you read the Deli, you have.
The band is back safe and sound in LA, and to coincide with the release of their album Timing is Everything, they’ll be performing in-store at Amoeba Music on Sunset Blvd at 7pm, tonight 3/22. To coax you out of your cozy warm homes, the band is giving a copy of their cd to everyone in attendance. And, hey, if you miss tonight then you can see them at the Troubadour on Sat, March 26th.

Meijin’s SXSW day 4
My final official day at the annual SXSW closed with what felt like a 5K. Arriving at the Filter Magazine Cultural Clash party in the Cedar Street Courtyard, I once again caught Norway’s jumpsuit-wearing dance crew, Datarock, who played until they were “thrown off” the stage, followed by New Zealand’s soft alternative quartet, The Naked and Famous (top picture). An attempt to see Surfer Blood ended quickly at the first glance of the mile long line, but LA’s new wave- meets- psychedelic rock act, Superhumanoids, and Toronto’s solo electro-pop act, Diamond Rings provided a soundtrack for the ideal spring day. A trip across the Congress Bridge led to folksy sensation, Bright Eyes (picture below), at the Auditorium Shores, where thousands flocked to enjoy the mini-festival atmosphere fraught with food stands and light sabers.
The trek back to downtown landed me at the Texas Rockfest’s “Roial” stage, a chic rooftop space where Black Taxi played amongst a roster of metal bands. Around the corner at the Speakeasy, Austin’s The Frontier Brothers’ energy radiated to the crowd and dragged people out of their exhausted state and had them jumping for joy. One last hike to the “Roial” roof ended my evening with Austin’s very own hard rock trio, Chronolung (picture below). SXSW 2011 had officially come to a close.
Black Math “Night Shade”
Black Math have released a trippy video for their track "Night Shade" which comes their Phantom Power which was released last year by Permanent Records.
Invictus Picks — Golden Girls — “Freebird”
A few summers ago, I met Andy Cary at one of the collective houses in Worcester. Grass Widow had just played and we were standing around in the garage, I told him about the Mika Miko show I had coming up and he already knew about it. He was cool. A few months later, at the stArt on the Street Festival , Andy came up to me and was like, "Dude you gotta hear my band, we’re awesome!" Now, don’t get me wrong, I give every band a good listen to, but when he said this, I imagined a sloppy new band, barely keeping time trying to rip-off whichever act was hot at the moment. He told me his band’s name was Golden Girls. I laughed. Well. it turns out Pitchfork got around to listening to GG before I did, and other indie blogs were going nuts over their song Amateur Teen Sex Attics because, like he said, they’re awesome.
I like what these guys are doing for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that they represent Worcester… hard. The scene there is definitely underground, but also definitely thriving, with awesome places like the Fuck Yeah Center, the collective houses and the skater punks who are building Worcide. All this and a couple of bands getting some national press ain’t too bad, if I do say so myself.
Golden Girls’ new single is Freebird, again they make me laugh. Right now they’re on tour with Truman Peyote.
