Heypenny CD Release @ Mercy Lounge, 2/26/11

Posted on:

HEYoh! It’s what we’ve been waiting for for over two years…the full-length release of "A Jillion Kicks," by Nashville dance-pop group, HEYPENNY. Apparently this album has been a long time in the making, was at one point completely scrapped, and then re-recorded alllll over again to ultimately achieve that infectiously catchy, unique sound the persistent group has been looking for all along. Phew. Good thing they’re alive and here to tell us about it, which will all take place on Saturday at Mercy Lounge. Opening the show will be local artists Natalie Prass, Action!, and Mikky Ekko, who are also actually some of the collaborators on the Heypenny album. You’ll be getting the best of both worlds at Saturday’s show, so make sure you grab yourself a ticket in advance–(this one sounds like it juuuuust might be a sell-out)–but if you’d rather gamble your Saturday night, you can buy tickets at the door for $12 (assuming you want a CD included), or for $7 (no CD included wah wahhhhhh). Doors at 9 pm. HEYte to miss it!–Erin Manning

NYC Hip Hop duo Rocky Business’ CD release party at Mercury on 02.23

Posted on:

Hip Hop is in an interesting period of change right now. Many rappers are realizing that they can’t just rhyme over hardcore beats and expect to be overnight superstars. Enter groups like Rocky Business, rapper-producer duos who combine elements of street rap with unorthodox pop/electro production. Of the wide spectrum of groups attempting to bridge the gap, Rocky Business stands out as a tasteful balance of skillful rhyming, upbeat rhythms, and healthy swagger. They’ll be releasing their new mixtape at the Mercury Lounge tomorrow, February 23. Dust off your dancing shoes and Gameboy belt buckle and prepare yourself for the electric revival! – BrokeMC

Drink Up Buttercup on “Skins”

Posted on:

Whether you just think the British version is better than the American version or you are conflicted because it kind of feels like softcore kiddie porn and is way to racy for your taste, tonight you have a reason to tune into “Skins” to show some local love and put your gripes aside because Drink Up Buttercup’s “Sosey and Dosey” will be making an appearance in the controversial MTV series. You can check out the new episode tonight at 10pm, and send the DUB dudes a message to let them know how it went because they don’t get that the MTV station on their television. Below is a stripped-down version of “Sosey and Dosey” that was recorded on the steps inside World Café Live. – The Deli Staff

The Archive play Mercury Lounge tonight (02.21)

Posted on:

Separately, the four members of The Archive have been at this for a while. They’ve played in countless bands – from indie rock to prog rock, ’60s psychedelia to ’70s punk – played countless shows – from New York’s Irving Plaza to 1,000-seat arenas in Toronto – and toured across the country. And yet it’s only now that they’ve managed to find each other. And things have never sounded better. Combining the raw, rootsy sound of Paul Westerberg and Spoon with the twisted beauty of Sigur Ros and early British shoegaze acts like Ride and Chapterhouse, The Archive draw inspiration from a host of influences on both sides of the Atlantic and both sides of the last decade. Check them out live at Mercury Lounge tonight (02.21). – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
