Interview with Myra Flynn

Posted on:

It’s a sunny winter day in Harvard Square in Cambridge. The snow may still be piled fifteen feet high and covered with months of sand and salt but after a brutal January this 40 degree day feels like the first day of summer. I even consider taking my winter jacket off. The sun is shining. The snow is melting. It’s a great day for a show.

When I sit down in the early afternoon to talk with Burlington, Vermont-based singer-songwriter, Myra Flynn, this Super Bowl Sunday afternoon, Club Passim is nearly empty. We choose a table near the front and sit down to chat. I’m taken immediately by how focused and self-assured Myra  is. She may be a passionate artist but she’s equally passionate about her life, her career and her musical community.

Talk of her early life moves quickly to Vermont, her love of Burlington and her on-again, off-again relationship with the city.

“I was born in Rockford, IL and we moved when I was 5 to Brookfield, VT which is literally in the middle of the woods. I kind of did the leave, come back, leave, come back thing and then came back and it stuck. I’m still there but I’m kind of getting the itch to move on. It’s been 5 years in Burlington and it’s been awesome. I love it there. It’s the coolest city in the world. It’s where I want to have my children someday. But I may be itching for a little bit more right now.”

Shenandoah & the Night is a promising NYC based quintet led by singer/songwriter/producer Shenandoah Ableman (of the San Francisco-based Yard Dogs Road Show). The band offers a seductive brand of noir orchestral pop that will surely charm fans of Tom Waits and Nick Cave. They are playing Rockwood Music Hall on March 31 and just announced the release of their 2nd album, out some time in May. Check out the titletrack "All The Beautiful Ladies" here.

NewVillager about to announce new release

Posted on:

Electronic duo New Villager has some seriously catchy songs in their repertoire – they caught our ear in 2009 and we went ahead and interviewed them in 2010 (here). We heard a rumor that they are just about to announce a new full length, so we thought it might be a good opportunity to write about them and get our readers to familiarize with our favorite song from the old record ("Rich Doors"), and its official video embedded here..

Tiny Animals release sophomore album on 04.05

Posted on:

Tiny Animals, a trio born out of Katonah, New York, is set to release their second album, “Our Own Time,” on April 5, 2011. A potpourri of pop, punk, and playfulness, Tiny Animals utilize interche and sweetly blend the vocals of Chris Howerton (lead vocals/guitar), Rita Maye (drums/vocals), and Anton Kreisl (bass/vocals). Peppy “Fight or Flight” launches the album’s varying dynamics and emotions. The record rides through the harmonious and tense, “A Long Journey,” spritely single “Wait For Me,” melodic and romantic “We Can Read the Stars,” rock ballad, “The Moment,” and the ethereal closer, “Love Scene.” While Tiny Animals inch toward “Our Own Time’s” debut, the trio is bringing their punchy pop to Pianos on February 19. http://www.tinyanimals.net –Meijin Bruttomesso

From the NYC Open Blog: Lucky Ghost

Posted on:

Recommended for fans of The New Pornographers (or people who wish that Weezer had broken up in the ’90s when they were still writing great music), indie-pop/snyth-rockers Lucky Ghost (brainchild of Seth Berkowitz, pitctured) have recently released the ten song LP "Sex Griddle" on Lapdance Academy Music, the free-download imprint based out of Brooklyn. The band combines ’70s prog with ’80s pop and the lyrical whimsy of Britain’s lush singer-songwriter traditions. A video for the album’s first single, "Made In America" has been edited together from antique skydiving and daredevil public-domain footage from the Prelinger Archives. The entire LP is available for free download here. (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

The Deli’s Philly Best Emerging Artists Poll – Top Performers: Grandchildren

Posted on:

The first time I saw Grandchildren play was nearly a year ago. Strangely, it wasn’t in our hometown of Philadelphia, but rather in a makeshift outdoor venue in Austin, TX during SXSW. I was strongly encouraged by my editor to see their live performance while I was there, and he could not have been more right about his suggestion. When I showed up, it looked more like they were preparing for a movie premiere than a concert, with a big white screen being hung in front of the band while they lay completely behind a wall of hallucinatory projections. From the first note until the last, I stood enraptured by their tightly orchestrated pop epics that would become their fantastic and long over due debut LP Everlasting. The musical collages were pulsing with multiple drum attacks while the intricate acoustics rode on a wave of atmospheric synths. They effortlessly meld normally foreign genres and have the restraint to make delicate tunes that transition seamlessly into vivacious full-band compositions.

2010 was like a coming out party for Grandchildren on the national scene. It was obvious that the local crew had the attention of anyone in earshot of their live performance. But in 2010, you found their videos for “Saturn Returns” featured on media outlets like The Fader and Spinner, which had a streaming preview of Everlasting on its site. They landed on the cover of Performer Magazine as the new face of electro-rock as well as hitting recorded live sessions with the way rad Black Cab Sessions and Big Ugly Yellow Couch. Grandchildren also shared the stage with notable indie acts like Explosions in the Sky, Dum Dum Girls, Holy Fuck and No Age. Those were just a few reasons why we found Grandchildren a Top Performer again in this year’s poll. The only thing we can hope for now is that they don’t take so long to release their next album. – Adam G.
