Weekly Feature #233a: Minuature Tigers

Posted on:

Originally hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Miniature Tigers have made the trek east to NYC like so many before them, in hope of leaving their own imprint on the local music scene. Unlike most of their peers though, they’ve left half the band behind. You’d expect this to create some practical issues for lead singer/guitarist Charlie Brand, but he’s keener to talk up the pros of maintaining some distance between him and his band mates. – Read Dean Van Nguyen’s feature on Miniature Tigers here.

Gem Club, Humble Tripe, Jakob Battick and Friends & Slant of Light – 1/23 – Precinct

I’m really excited about this show on Sunday. This is the whole point of the Deli — New England to introduce you to bands and sounds you haven’t heard yet from your area and other parts of the country. The show is early on a Sunday, doors at 7:30 and first band on at 8pm. Look forward to seeing you.

Gem Club — 11pm

Beautiful and trippy, I fell in love with their new EP Acid and Everything.

Humble Tripe –10pm

Humble Tripe is an acoustic 2-3 piece led by folk singer and songwriter Shawn Luby. Shawn’s based in Durham, NC but one of his bandmates lives in Boston.

Jakob Battick and Friends –9pm

Jakob Battick & Friends won last month’s Deli band of the month, and for very good reason. The young artist along with his rotating cast of musicians are sonically pushing things in their hometown of Portland in the most delicately powerful way possible. Jakob mixes folk and atmospheric elements …but brings a unique and more diverse edge to the stage that carves their sound out to stand wholly on it’s own.’ -Will Ryan

Slant of Light — 8pm

Slant Of Light is a newer Boston-based Americana band.

Guards release debut 7″play Glasslands with Oberhofer & The Vaccines (01.22)

Posted on:

Guards is the solo project of Richie James Follin; originally from California, Follin wrote his music for Guards in New York City. He had the help of friends Caroline Polachek from Chairlift, James Richardson of MGMT, and Loren Shane Humphrey of Willowz, and sister Madeline Follin of Cults appearing as guests on some of the songs. Follin’s warm-toned and dynamic vocals, straight forward drumming and sprawling guitar gives a bit of a throwback to an older more soulful sound. Each song gives something different, but still has a warmth and family style atmosphere. Guards is good for the following (and more): some slow dancing, jumping up and down, cleaning the house. The band is releasing their debut 7" and playing Glasslands on 01.22. – Lauren Piper

Five O’Clock Heroes release debut CD in February

Posted on:

Five O’Clock Heroes have been around for quite a while (7 years according to myspace) but, since being in a rock band is the toughest business in the world, it took them a while to release their debut album, scheduled for February 2011 on Glaze Records. The fact that the quartet is equally split between US and UK residents surely didn’t help… These guy play some darn catchy indie rock with 50s pop influences vaguely reminiscent of Elvis Costello. Check out their new video of the song Rough Boys

Interview with Michael Bernier

Posted on:

The Deli is proud to present this in-depth interview with Michael Bernier of Michael Bernier of the UPRISING. Bernier was one of last years winners in the Best of New England Emerging Artists 2009 Poll and is also a contender this year.

michael

Though a native of the Boston area, Michael Bernier would prefer to consider himself a citizen of the world; content to tramp the Earth in search of peace and enlightenment, and expressing those sensibilities through his music. Michael took some time out before embarking on his solo acoustic winter tour to talk about his music, personal philosophies, and his bandmates in The UPRISING.

Deli: In a band setting that brings vastly different musical tastes, I wondered aloud how those differing tastes find their way into the music of The UPRISING.

MB: There is definitely a great variation of musical tastes in within The UPRISING….each member is perhaps drawn towards a specific genre as far as their playing style or writings. I am deep into Reggae and Singer/Songwriter stuff, RyBomb (Michael’s brother and bassist, Ryan Bernier) is into Jazz and Jam, Katie (saxophonist, Kate Berlent) is into Jazz and Acoustic Rock, F (drummer, Mark F) is into Metal and Grunge, Moore (guitarist, Mikey Moore) is into Classic Rock and Motown.

I would say that overall everyone tunes into music that they think is good and real…regardless of genre…the music that makes you feel that emotion you need…the song that takes you away and makes you forget that you are still driving in that smelly van.

Nashville

Megan McCormick, Jill Andrews @ 3rd & Lindsley 1/23/11

Posted on:

3rd & Lindsley’s Sunday night show is worth a mention; not only is local singer/songwriter Megan McCormick playing, but Nashville’s also being neighborly with its East Tennessee musical counterpart. Johnson City native Jill Andrews will be there with her soft and southern folk pop (and will hopefully play her beautiful cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”). Crystal Bowersox is on the bill as well, tickets are ten bucks and the show starts at 7:30. – Jessica Pace

Strand of Oaks w/Pattern Is Movement’s Chris Ward Open for Sharon Van Etten at JB’s Jan. 20

Posted on:

It’s astounding – but not surprising – the amount of press, praise, and success Tim Showalter, a.k.a. Strand of Oaks, is experiencing. The folk troubadour was named a highlight of this year’s SXSW festival by Pitchfork, who debuted his Memory Drift-directed video for his single "Last to Swim", and more impressively, he raised $4,278 on Kickstarter to fund the vinyl pressing of his disquietingly touching album, Pope Killdragon. And his original goal was only $1,500. So I guess that means drinks are on him tonight. Right? Showalter will be backed this evening by Pattern is Movement‘s Chris Ward guest appearing on drums for their first live performance together (well, I’m not counting their Black Cab Session). They will be sharing the bill with sought-after up-and-coming Brooklyn (by way of Jersey) songstress Sharon Van Etten at Johnny Brenda’s. (The delicate soars of southern songbird Julianna Barwick will also fill the room.) It’s fair to say that tonight should be just one of those evening where you grab a drink and listen quietly. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave, 8:30pm, $12, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia
