The Beets release new album and single on Captured Tracks

Posted on:

The Beets deliver their music with raucous, adolescent fun coupled with an otherwise obnoxious sense of humor. Their album covers snarkily display hand-drawn cartoons featuring such priceless advice as: "Hey you!, get off of that cloud. That’s Mick Jagger’s Cloud!" from their newly pressed 2-track 7" Time Brought Age/Pick Another Corner and, "If I’d only stayed in Queens, and just read about Africa" taken from the crayola’ed album cover of their second full-length The Beets Stay Home, released from Captured Tracks (home of Blank Dogs and Mink) last year. Carrying their penchant for no-fi cool to an almost absurd level of commitment, these Jackson Heights residents have recorded their albums using what sounds like it could be a Fisher Price tape recorder. Hearing band members Jose Garcia and Juan Waters scream their rough harmonies over such stifling equipment, I keep wondering if these bedroom recordings work because of, or in spite of this messiness. The Beets are the "Thee Oh Sees" for a younger generation looking for their fix of jangly, pop nuggets. And like Thee Oh Sees, The Beets get right to the point (only one track on The Beets Stay Home clocks in at over 3 minutes). Obnoxious or puerile, this music is a lot of fun, and catchy enough to make you want to stay home yourself with their latest record. – Mike Levine

Deli readers,

The time is upon us. If you haven’t yet noticed, our Best of Los Angeles Emerging Artists 2010 Poll is open and ready for voting on the right-hand side or you can visit the voting link directly here.

After taking votes from our lovely panel of jurors (see below) as well as choices from our open submission period, we’ve crafter a list that includes some of the most exciting and hard working emerging acts of 2010.

Right now all the artists in the list have accumulated some points from the votes cast by jurors and writers, now it’s the fans and readers’ turn!

The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) of the Month: Caboder

Posted on:

We first came across the members of Caboder at Silk City opening for Pony Pants and Post Post, but that was when they went by the name of Trench Mouth. Back then, which isn’t that long ago, they had an emo-looking lead guitarist who wasn’t bad, but just didn’t seem like the right fit for the rest of the crew. But you can tell that all they wanted to do was play for the audience (probably a little too long for an opener – remember fellas sometimes less is more). Well, they found a new lead guitarist that seems like a much better fit and a new band name that has been waiting for them since lead man Cody James Wren was a baby. And yes, the West Philly crew still “like playing music together” and they “like making music for you”. And YES, they “will gladly play in your small, small room” so book them already. But check out our usual get-to-know-you interview with Caboder below, and they’ll also be opening tonight at Kung Fu Necktie w/Adam & Dave’s Bloodline, Blayer Pointdujour and Shorty Boy-Boy.

The Deli: How did the band start?

Caboder: Steve and Cody have been playing together for about 4 years as The Psychodelicates, Shades, Beardezzis, and Trench Mouth. After they decided to finally ditch they’re iPod drum machine, Pat joined the band. About 6 months ago, Alex joined on lead guitar, and together they made CABODER.

TD: Where did the band name Caboder come from?

C: Caboder was Cody’s nickname as a baby. "Caboder-front-end-loader" his mom would say.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

C: Steve – The Walkmen. Cody – Girls. Alex- John C. Reilly. Pat – Do Make Say Think.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?

C: Tongue Sculptors, Your Children is Beautiful, Titus Andronicus, The Skateboards!, Gypsy Death and You, The Skin Cells, Girls.

TD: What’s the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?

C: Cody – Weezer/Green Day – Dookie. Alex – guitar teacher took him to see a jazz trio at the tower/Blink 182 – Dude Ranch. Steve – John Fogerty/Led Zeppelin – II. Pat – Barenaked Ladies/ Paul Simon – Graceland.

TD: What do you love about Philly?

C: The uprising music scene is incredible and being able to watch the bands around you that you’ve followed for so long grow and find recognition.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

C: Winter, and people from New Jersey…HA.

TD: What are your plans for 2011?

C: We are all dying to get our music recorded so we can begin spreading it more and are working on getting an east coast tour together.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

C: Recently we got a show together in the basement of the band’s house in West Philly. It was great because we were able to get all of friends together and some of our favorite local bands to play, and everyone had a kiss ass time.

TD: What’s your favorite thing to get at the deli?
C: Chickens finger hoagies, toasted Italian hoagies and sweet peppers with honey mustard gizzled all over.

THE NEW L.A. FOLK FEST

Posted on:

If you’re sick and tired of walking down the desolate streets of Hollywood, the scent of food trucks in Echo Park, or staring out into the Pacific Ocean dreaming of escape, then it’s time to venture out to Pioneertown. We are teaming up with L.A. Record to present L.A. Folk Fest for a weekend of fun, bonfires, BBQ, and some good music! The event will take place at Pappy and Harriets, a mom and pop venue out in the desert with pool tables, cheap drinks, great food, and old-fashioned folk rock decor. The first time I ever went to Pappy’s was to see Conor Oberst and The Felice Brothers play, and was blown away at how amazing the venue was, both sound wise and the overall fun vibe of the place.

Folk, country, Western Swing….we’ve got it all with the lineup of He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, Amanda Jo Williams, and Tommy Santee Klaws. The show is $10 and it starts at 8pm on Saturday, February 26th. I suggest reserving tickets ahead of time, as well as making a weekend out of it and booking a room at the hotel next to the venue(perhaps antique store shopping the next day?). E-mail lafolkfest@gmail.com to get on the "Weekend At Pappy’s" RSVP list.

Sarah Jaffe & Bosque Brown @ The Ghost Room Tonight!! (1/21)

Posted on:

Denton natives Sarah Jaffe and Bosque Brown will take hold of The Ghost Room this Friday in downtown Austin.

Singer/songwriter Jaffe released her second album, Suburban Nature, last year, and received Rolling Stone recognition for her 2010 Austin City Limits performance.  Don’t let Jaffe’s tender looks and blonde locks fool you. She possesses no fluff. Her song “Clementine” is an extraordinary find. Jaffe’s voice is wonderfully rich and wistful. She impressively crafts her words and sound with smoldering fervor. Folksy Bosque Brown (named after a river near Mara Lee Miller’s childhood home) will also perform at the spooky venue.

Bosque Brown will perform at 9:30 p.m. Jaffe comes on at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Be sure to wish Jaffe a happy early birthday, too. The talented singer turns 25 on the 29th.

Posted on:

A-yo readers!

Finally you can all vote for your favorite emerging DC/Baltimore artist of 2010 from the list on the right!

Right now all the artists in the list have accumulated some points from the votes cast by jurors and writers, now it’s the fans and readers’ turn!

NYC Electronic Artists on the rise: Argon 40

Posted on:

With a distinguishable pop sound that encompasses electronic keys, digital drums, and a plethora of synth instrumentation, it seems only fitting that the conception of Argon 40 began over the Internet. Adam Williams and Heather Greene, the duo who make up the mellow, cyber-sounding Argon 40, created a handful of tunes simply by pressing the send button. Heather Greene, both accomplished musician and Scotch whiskey expert, already boasts two albums – 2005’s “Five Dollar Dress,” recorded alongside guitar luminary Bill Frisell, and 2009’s “Sweet Otherwise,” a lauded success with audiences in Europe and the UK. Dubbed “American Ambassador of the Year” by Whisky Magazine, Heather also splits her time with Glenfiddich, taking on the role of Scotch specialist with the Banffshire-based company. Together, Adam and Heather are teaming up to host the Glenfiddich Artist Series, sponsored listening parties featuring tracks from the duo’s new album “Fair Lawn,” and other Argon 40-inspired music. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

From the NYC Open Blog: Les Bicyclettes Blanches play Public Assembly on 02.01

Posted on:

Sounding like a lo-fi mélange of The Feelies and Stereolab, Les Bicyclettes Blanches formed in the summer of 2005, in Woodstock NY, in a barn of an old mill turned into a Native American ceremonial center, blessed by Tibetan monks. The core of the band is Magnolia Santibanez (vocals/guitar/bass/keys), from Paris, France and Mackenzie Miller Parker (drums/guitar/bass) from the Catskills. They have created music together and collaborated with other musicians they have encountered on their tours of the US and Europe like Amanda Jo Williams, Venture Lift, Paul McMahon, Christian Naess, Paul Peterson. They have recorded 9 albums and can be heard on some radios stations as well as a few compilations from LA Record, Manimal Vinyl, and Winter Records. Check them out at Public Assembly on February 1st, 2011, 8pm. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
