Psychedelia signifies very different ideas to different bands. For Montreal’s The High Dials, it’s a throwback to the swirling, technicolor guitars of the 60s. For local act Weird Owl, it sounds like the epic arena rock of Neil Young and early Black Sabbath. For personal faves, the Brooklyn Raga Association (in the picture), it’s mystical tablas, sitars and harmoniums overlaid with obscure film samples.
Fortunately, you won’t have to choose between any of these sounds… see these and 5 other trippy acts Jan 29 @ Brooklyn’s newest DIY venue, Party Expo, where these bands will be in attendance for the lady Bree-organized Psychfest #2 running from 5pm to 1am(ish). Visual Projections will touch up the otherwise drab interior of Party Expo, and DJs Paul Dillon (Perfect Prescription) and Captain Heartlock will keep things moving between bands. Beer will be provided from Brooklyn Breweries from 8:30 to 9 so be sure and get there early! – $10 21+. – Mike Levine

Briar Rabbit will be performing a free show at The Whistler on Sunday Jan. 30th at 9:45.
Your Canvas
Dueling guitar and keyboard couple, Your Canvas will melt your heart before they even start playing – and if anything’s left, the music will sweep it away. Jessy Boudreaux’s voice hangs in the air like a mysterious wind on your shoulder, weaving between the layered warmth of keys and towering riffs of guitars. Add the soft pummel of a smiling drum machine behind it all and you won’t know whether to dance or swoon. Febuary 1st brings YC to Ella St. Social Club with Charts for free. Free swooning, you seriously can’t beat it. –Mike Harper

Iron & Wine: Kiss Each Other Clean
The first new album from Iron & Wine in more than three years, Kiss Each Other Clean, arrives today, and tomorrow Waterloo Records will mark the event with their patented Pizza & Listening party at 5pm. Mr. Iron & Wine, aka Sam Beam, made the wise decision to adopt Austin (well, Dripping Springs) as his home several years ago; he’s kept a very Austin-like low profile, but he gets lots of love from KUT and even makes an occasional studio appearance. Mostly he’s been busy expanding his brood; I believe the count stands now at five children and four full-length albums, all of which could explain why he sounds sleepy.
He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister at the Troubadour, Feb 3rd.
Before their show on Feburary 26th at the New LA Folk Fest, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister will be popping their heads above ground for their show at the Troubadour with British singer/songwriter Bobby Long (it’s worth mentioning his album comes out Feb 1st.). If you’ve yet to see HMBSMS, this is as good a chance as any to soak up their alt. folk musings complete with cello and a bit of tap dancing, and perhaps the masquerade masks will make an appearance too. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Then take a look at the video below.

Free Download: “Born In Clouds” – New Collaboration from Oh! Pears’ Corey Duncan & Attia Taylor!
We were very happy to receive the brand spankin’ new track “Born In Clouds” from Oh! Pears’ Corey Duncan and Attia Taylor. The two are sharing a bill at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, February 11 so they thought that it “would be cool/interesting to create something together to shed some light on the show and how our styles would blend or clash. This is what came out of our few sessions together!” Oh baby – they brilliantly orchestrate minimal drums, bass, handclaps and male-female vocals creating a joyously opulent tune that marches through your head leaving trails of melodies to be hummed over and over again. With some nifty production work (the magic of overdubbing), the layers of “Born In Clouds” swell to glorious peaks building a composition undoubtedly much greater than its parts revealing a sample of the true beauty that can come from collaborations. Duncan and Taylor were also nice enough to allow us to share it with you so take a LISTEN and DOWNLOAD it for FREE below. (And it didn’t even cost you an e-mail.) Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

Invictus Picks — Left Hand Does — Guitar
The first time I saw Left Hand Does perform was in a living room in Allston. I was just getting into Jean Sullivan’s bass lines for "Spendle" when the cops came. Legend has it the officer was tapping his foot and said "Good stuff," before shutting it down. Such is life when you do it DIY. Since then I’ve seen LHD play dozens of times and I’ll be the first to admit they are one of my favorite Boston bands. Not just because frontman Luke Sullivan and I share the same tastes for early 80’s rock bands like The Cars and Golden Earring (which samples of "Cut" are on this track) and not only because this band is so easy going they will hop on a last minute slot to save my ass when a band has to cancel or at least suggest another awesome band, for instance, Streight Angular. But because they write great songs!
So, here is a track off the Lusica EP called "Guitar". This song caught my attention at yet another DIY show in Allston. The lyrics "I want you so bad, feels good to say that" resonated with me. Ever been lovesick? Ever just wanted to tell the object of your affection, straight up that theyre torturing you because all you want to do is "touch their face" and "thread their hand"? Well here’s the song with more lines like "I secretly want you to worship me, so secretly" Sigh. Been there, but such is life.

Wazu releases single “Murder 1”
Listening to Wazu‘s "Murder 1" provokes the urge to paint an Aladdin Sane lightning bolt across your face and visit a seedy, underground hot spot full of androgynous artists and wandering neon lights. The track sparkles with all the glitter and glitz of 70s glam rock and pops in your head like candy. Wazu resonates the same sexy, trancy sound as acts like Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, Marc Bolan, or Roxy Music. They intertwine the former with the new age feel of bands like Metric or Ladytron. They are recording the songs for their debut record in February, and it is expected out in March.
Purchase "Murder 1" in any format desired, and name the price!
