Best of Nashville Open Submissions, (Stage 1): Kink Ador

Posted on:

As you may know, this is only the initial stage of our poll, as about 50 other Nashville artists were selected by a jury of local promoters, music bloggers and other scene makers. (We’ll publish that list soon, along with our Sonic Bids selections).

Kink Ador received the most votes out of the Nashville-based artists that submitted in the "Open Submissions" category to be considered for our Best of Nashville Poll 2010. They will move on to the next stage of our poll!

Their music reminds us of the B-52’s, Sleater-Kinney, and some of the older Yeah Yeah Yeah’s stuff. Good mix huh? Check out their stuff, and if you like it, be a friend and fan them on Facebook. Apparently their band page was recently deleted on accident/hacked, thus causing them to lose over 3,000 fans. That’s a bummer. Help’em out!–Erin Manning

Best of DC/Baltimore Artist Submissions

Posted on:

The Chance gained the most votes for the DC/Baltimore based artists that submitted to be considered for our Best of DC/Baltimore Poll 2010. They will therefore access the next stage of our poll.

The current alternative rock duo the Chance have been making regular treks up to NYC recording a new EP due to be released in the very near future.  This will be the followup to their previous release Dimensions that received awesome critic praise; “…this is an incredibly full and almost epic sound with a lot of ambience and intricate composition.” Matt Stabley, NBC4. “…an expansive sound that melds vocals that are both brooding and forceful…” Crispin Knott, Roll Magazine.“The four tracks on “Dimensions” are sonically challenging and equally fulfilling.” Robert Fulton, OnTap Magazine.

Sonic Bids Picks: Baron Grod, The Sour Notes, Megan Tubb

Posted on:

Atmospheric post-rockers Baron Grod ("a soundtrack to a disturbingly addictive Kubrick film") topped the list of our Sonic Bids submissions this year; you’ll often find them featured in the employee picks over at Waterloo, unfortunately, as of yet there’s nowhere to find them playing live in 2011. They were joined at the top of our Sonic Bids list by The Sour Notes, who return from a winter tour to play the Cactus on Jan. 20th, and the bluesy Megan Tubb & The Shady People, who will celebrate a CD release Feb. 5th at the Saxon.

Best of NYC Submissions, HIP HOP+DANCE+WORLD: French Horn Rebellion

Posted on:

This category gathers pretty much all the NYC Year End Poll submissions we received outside the rock and and folk realms. Disco duo French Horn Rebellion earned the top spot (and nomination for the next round) with their groovy and somewhat cheeky reinterpretation of the dancefloor sound of the 80s. Kudos to Infernal Devices and Gangstagrass who were strong runner ups.

Best of NYC Submissions, PSYCH + NOISE: Invisible Days + Kordan

Posted on:

This year we grouped Psych Rock and Shoegazer submissions to our Best of NYC Emerging Artists 2010 Poll with Noise Rock ones, although it was mostly artists from the first genre group that rose to the top positions. Invisible Days (top picture), after catching the attention of the NYC staff with their new single "Solitary Time", they also impressed The Deli’s out of town editors selected to rate bands in this category, and they qualified to the next round together with Kordan (whom we also decided to promote to the next phase because they got an outstanding average rating of 9 out of 10). All the artists in this top 10 received really good ratings and it breaks our hart to get only two of them through to the final stage of our poll.

Where Is My Mind?: An American Chinese’s Mitch Marzec

Posted on:

The first time that I booked a band for a show at Johnny Brenda’s I was introduced to the music of An American Chinese who also shared the bill. They had just released the EP Panic Pilgrim and an ingenious video for the track “Panic Pilgrim, Quick Grab Your Suitcase”. I have to admit that I was quite enamored by the attention to detail and uniqueness that I found in the artistic efforts of all things An American Chinese so the wait for their latest release and debut LP Utopian Tree has been a bit excruciating at times, especially with lead man Mitch Marzec’s empty promises of its release over the last year. However, I forgive him because it has been worth the wait, and tonight they’ll finally have the official/belated celebration for the release of Utopian Tree at Kung Fu Necktie so join us this evening and enter the strangely unique world of An American Chinese. But first, check out our interview with Mitch Marzec for Where Is My Mind? here.

Best of Philly Open Submissions: Ryat

Posted on:

Ryat gained the most votes amongst the Philly-based artists that submitted to be considered for our Best of Philly Poll 2010. She will therefore go on to the next stage of our poll along with Hair Rocket and Science Fiction Fantasy.

“Collaboratively paired with composer/boyfriend Tim Conley, Ryat’s ‘inter-dimensional’ soundscapes create a universe of their own, luring listeners in with smoldering backbeats and dizzying synth. Expressive and pronounced, Ryat’s work is delicate, fierce, and daring, departing from the norms within her genre for destinations elsewhere.” – Dianca Potts

“Like any good breakup, it’s equal parts dark, mysterious and bizarre…With this EP (Novelty – Hair Rocket), we are introduced to what can happen when a Berklee dropout takes what he has learned, what he has felt and what he has tolerated, smashes them all together and hopes for the best. Lucky for us, the result pretty much kicks ass.” – Meaghan McCafferty

“The sound at times recalls the haunting pop of Grizzly Bear while the sonic pulsing that emerges seems to pay homage (very skillfully) to ambient composer Steven Reich…It is an emotional traveler that effortlessly flows from melancholy to dreamy contentment both lyrically and musically. The intricate cascading vocals and detailed arrangements along with the thoroughly enjoyable glitch-outs show Science Fiction Fantasy to be a musical chameleon that can flawlessly imitate and thoughtfully create.” – Adam G.

Best of New England Open Submissions: Good Kids Sprouting Horns

Posted on:

Good Kids Sprouting Horns from Portland, ME gained the most votes for the open submissions poll amongst New England based artists that submitted to be considered for our Best of New England Poll 2010. They will therefore access the next stage of our poll. The votes were cast by two other Deli editors, the editor of the Los Angeles Deli and the editor of the Chicago Deli out of 25 bands.

Good Kids Sprouting Horns is a little keyboard crazy (but in a good way). They’ve recently announced that they will be putting out a new album as soon as (hopefully) Spring.

4. The Luxury

5. Hey Mama

6. Air Traffic Controller
