The Wild Sea – Every Tuesday in January, 7:30pm at Toad

Posted on:

the wild sea

Last Tuesday night marked the beginning of The Wild Sea’s month long residency at long time Cambridge institution, Toad. Ruth Peterson and Todd Russell have been performing and writing songs together since their band was called Amusia over ten years ago, and their dedication to the craft of songwriting shows. Each tune is arranged purposefully, Peterson’s lyrics are thoughtful and performances are always stellar.

Expect some covers peppered in during the two sets The Wild Sea plays during their residency at Toad this month. Last week we heard Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin stripped down to the bones, along with a jazz-infused rendition of Michael Jackson’s "Billie Jean". With instrumental support from Adam Moss (fiddle), Chris Anzalone (percussion) and Sean Staples (mandolin) you never know what flavors might creep in. Rumor has it there will be more surprise guests as the month goes on, so make sure you catch The Wild Sea at least once this month, Tuesday nights at Toad in Porter Square. Every Tuesday this month at Toad in Porter Square, 7:30-9:30, 21+, never a cover.

Roommate “Guilty Rainbow”

Posted on:

Roommate is partnering with one of Chicago’s newer labels Antephonic (the sister-label to Contraphonic, Inc) to release the band’s third album Guilty Rainbows. The album is set to be released on March 22nd, but early report say that this is the band’s most complete and forceful product to date. You can get a sense of what the album may sound like from the recently released single "Snow Globe"

Roommate will be performing at The Hideout on Feb. 5th with SHAPERS as part of a Coach House Sounds show. The record release show for Guilty Rainbows will be on March 18th at Empty Bottle with Dozens and Algernon.

Nashville Nominees from SonicBids submissions: Junkyard Girls, Dark Circles, Resident Scout

Posted on:

Congratulations to Junkyard Girls, Dark Circles, and Resident Scout – the three artists who were selected from Sonicbids for our Band of the Year Poll.
Junkyard Girls (top picture) could be described as a darker, more ambient blend of Antony and the Johnsons; Dark Circles is a folk duo that could be compared to an equally as relaxing Jimmy Buffet, while Resident Scout (bottom picture) has more of an indie vibe, 90’s alternative thing going on with some ska thrown in to make things more interesting….like Foo Fighters meets Cold War Kids. It was a tough choice, but all three of these bands stood out to us with their originality. They will be moving on to the next stage, as well as the ten bands who were selected in the Open Submissions category last week. Keep checking back for developments with our Best of Nashville Emerging Artists Poll! – Erin Manning

The Debut of The Folkadelphia Concert Series Starts in February

Posted on:

Folkadelphia’s Fred Knittel will be hosting a new concert series this February at Johnny Brenda’s aptly named The Folkadelphia Concert Series, which will be presented by Philadelphia Folksong Society and WXPN. It aims to provide intimate performances and insightful artist discussions with some of the more progressive artists in the “folk music” genre. The inaugural shows in February will be bringing in local artists like Hezekiah Jones, The Spinning Leaves and Meg Baird as well as Lewis & Clarke and Arborea. Guest moderators like Gene Shay of WXPN’s Folk Show, Biff Kennedy of Charterhouse Music, and Levi Landis of the Philadelphia Folksong Society will also be helping to lead the discussions. It will take place on Sundays February 6th, 20th and 27th from 1pm – 3pm. Admission is $7, and members of Philadelphia Folksong Society get in for free. Sounds like a good place to get your folk on if you can rally yourself after that Saturday night bender. – The Deli Staff

On the Water Sharing a Moment at DDG Jan. 11

Posted on:

I instantly connected with On the Water’s barebones recordings/demos – a gorgeously achy folk side project from Da Comrade!’s Fletcher Van Vliet. What you find are beautiful melodies and timeless lyrics sung with an earnest rasp of a man that doesn’t sing for you or me. He sings to ease his own soul. But luckily, he is also willing to share it with us. I had a chance to catch an impressive set by a stripped-down version of On the Water that consisted of five or six familiar faces from the local music scene, and I was told by Vliet that the full band reaches ten. It was the first time they had ever performed with mics which made it a stressful situation for some of the members, especially in a fairly large-sized venue like The Blockley. But they better get used to it because this is a project that belongs to be on bigger stages in front of larger audiences. Well, until that day comes (fingers crossed), it’s nice to know that we can see an up-and-coming band of this caliber on a Tuesday night at Danger Danger Gallery and most likely without the need for mics creating those rare, intimate moments that few get to experience. Be one of them. Danger Danger Gallery, 5013 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $5 – $10 donation, All Ages (Photo by Aubrey Michelle) – Q.D. Tran

Kelli Schaefer’s Album Coming March 1st!

Posted on:

After weeks on weeks of recording and releasing two songs monthly in Amigo/Amiga’s A-side /B-side, old 45 style song-release series, Kelli Schaefer’s new album is soon to be wholly formed and ready to hit your digital shelves. Kelli’s overpoweringly genuine anthems belay the idea of the common Portland singer-songstress, with the blaring sincerity of calm folk crooning marked against her captivating vocal style that builds, bends, and grows with her at times weeping/at times booming guitar. On the wave of her recent Kickstarter, Kelli’s newest project is off to the presses and will be available March 1st, and don’t dare miss her at the Doug Fir January 19th! – Mike Harper

New Video – “Clean Yourself Up” by Cozy Galaxies

Posted on:

We miss the days when all you needed was just a few friends, a football, and the energy to run around and beat the shit out of each other. Those were fun times, and we miss those days and evenings when you didn’t have a care in the world, except maybe having enough change to grab a Slurpee or Gatorade afterwards. Well, thank you Cozy Galaxies for giving us that feeling of innocence back with their new video “Clean Yourself Up” below. You can catch them Wednesday, January 19 at Kung Fu Necktie with Baltimore’s Secret Mountains, Giant Mind and Clean Equations. – The Deli Staff
