Ezra Furman “Mysterious Power”

Posted on:

Ezra Furman and The Harpoons announced the details of the third studio album, Mysterious Power, today. The album finds the band departing their local home Minty Fresh for the Warner Music label Red Parlor Records. The album will feature twelve tracks include the tile track, Mysterious Power, which the band performed for Daytrotter back in Feb. 2009. Furman has come to be known for his over-the-top and deeply emotional lyrics, and from the looks of this release he will not disappoint. With tracks like "I Killed Myself But I Didn’t Die", "Hard Time in a Terrible Land", and "Bloodsucking Whore" you can see that he is going all out on this one. The album is set to be released on April 5th.

Ezra Furman and The Harpoons will launch a headlining US tour in March after their appearance at SXSW.

NYC Artists on the rise: Shenandoah’ sensual decadentism at Bar 4, 01.21

Shenandoah and the Night is a band with en plein air picnics on its mind and a nightingale in its heart. Steeped in the tradition of American folk with elements of doo-wop, and haunting vocals, their music maps out cinematic landscapes and nostalgic love scenes. Come see them live at Bar 4 in Park Slope on January 21. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

"Its tough to be impartial when it comes to your friends art, so I’m not gonna even attempt to do that (and just ramble). I’ve known the gruesome two-some of Brendan and Peter for a few dog years or so, and I’ve seen the band consistently develop throughout this friendship puberty we’ve got goin’ on (whats with all this hair?). I’m two tracks in so far and I can say that THIS is their most impressive recording to date, and I wanna kiss them on their mouths. They managed to harness the uninhibited temper tantrum that we’ve come to expect of their live show on to tape. There’s the fuzzy guitar acrobatics cast alongside more focused, metal-meets-SST style drumming, both climaxing in unison, exploding angst-ridden love on all our faces. Well done dudes." -Russell Hymowitz – The Highway Gimps(as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Patrick Joseph – Antiques LP

Posted on:

As public voting for our 2010 emerging artist poll approaches, I think now is an apt time to talk about someone who the Deli hasn’t covered quite yet, as our recently announced list of bands definitely has some familiar faces.

Patrick Joseph is an interesting fellow; in his mid 20’s he’s an accomplished singer/songwriter whose declined record deals in the pursuit of doing things on his own terms. His debut full length, Antiques, was released in November to eager ears. The album includes "Arsonist Blues", a song that landed him an offer from Original Signal records and has him sounding like the  grittier, spirtual successor to Jeff Buckly’s throne. Named as one of his inflences, the track "Don’t Believe It" takes a cue from Radiohead’s Karma Police piano melody, but just enough to make you proud that you realize the reference. The entire album is streaming via Patrick’s Myspace if you feel so inclined.

Patrick’s next show is Januart 30th at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach for their songwriter round.

Album Review: Warriors – Dragon King

Posted on:

Even in the supposedly wide-open realm of indie, it’s somewhat rare to find a band who’s actually hard to categorize. Everything tends to fit into easy compartments, and even while those compartments are often kind of weird or niche ("shoegaze", "post-rock", freak folk", etc.), it’s still not a challenge to come up with the obvious reference points for the bands that subscribe to them. Dragon King, however, is somewhat of a break from that. Sure, they’re a breed of electronic pop, but just where do they come from exactly? I can’t think of anyone in particular that sounds like them, though that probably has more to do with the fact that they don’t draw from any of those niche genres so much.

The Warriors EP starts out aggressively with "Wolfboy", a sort of hip-hop meets electrorock shuffle. It features Peedi Crakk, which is pretty much enough to seal the track’s rap street cred, as the guy has collaborated with everyone from The Roots to Jay-Z. The song’s grimy bassline and pulsing synth doesn’t return until the last track of the record, "Wild Night", whose chorus is about as big and blunt as things get. Sandwiched between all this are a couple of subtler, slow-burn tunes. "Warriors" builds up graciously, piling on little synth bleeps and bloops, eventually culminating in gorgeous, swooning vocal harmonies. "Altamont Sunrise" is probably the best choice for a single. Its instrumentation is minimal, at least compared to the rest of the EP, but this is to make way for its vocal melody. It feels natural and breezy, containing hints of some classic pop songwriting.

The mood of the first track is somewhat at odds with that of the next couple, and listeners might find themselves divided between these two "types" in Dragon King songs. For some, this might indicate a band that can do a lot of things and isn’t afraid to try them out. But for others, it might be a sign of band that hasn’t quite found their sound yet. Either way, there’s enough potential going on to make the Warriors EP a worthwhile listen. You can pay what you want to download the album here. – Joe Poteracki

Arches Get a Little P4K Love

Posted on:

It was nice to see a local band with no label backing get some love from Pitchfork today. You might remember that Arches was a Deli poll nominee a while back. Well, the duo is working on an upcoming album and the track “This Isn’t a Good Night for Walking” was featured on P4K’s playlist. We enjoy seeing lesser known local acts reaching the larger media outlets without the PR machine pushing them along. Good stuff! You can also check out “This Isn’t a Good Night for Walking” at their MySpace or download their self-titled EP for free here. Arches will be at Danger Danger Gallery on Monday, January 17. – The Deli Staff

And And And And And And…

Posted on:

Conjunctionally cacophonous indie channeling some sort of surf rock with a sleight punk wave, And And And, like their name, just keep it coming. If there ever was a group of album bleeding rapscallions to make you forget the snow-worthy-yet-still-snowless winds as of late, it’s these guys with their EP after EP after album after album of &&&-branded energy. You can’t help but dance to it, yell and scream along with it, and kick up the dust of their summertime-nostalgia sounds. A new album due sometime in March is in the works at this very moment (do they ever run out of material??), as well as a split vinyl on Eggy Records coming this summer with Archers, Woolen Men, and Charts. And And And is playing the Into The Woods One Year Anniversary extravaganza at Holocene on January 27th, where you’ll be able to catch their video for "Blast 2" from Into The Woods’s Feels Like Home series. – Mike Harper
