Invictus Picks — Slothrust — Misnomer

Joe Saliba’s (of Mad Oak Studios in Allston) first sentence to me was "So I hear you like Deerhunter?", then he gave me the Fluorescent Grey EP and we’ve been turning each other onto bands ever since. His most recent find is  female-fronted, Slothrust, rock music that well, rocks.

Do you remember the first time you heard Karen O belt out, "As a fuck son you sucked" and you thought, "Damn, this chick has balls!"? Slothrust’s Leah Wellbaum has the same effect. You’ll see after you listen to "Misnomer".

Best of Chicago Emerging Artists 2010 Fans’ Poll is on! + List of Jurors

Posted on:

Finally you can all vote for your favorite emerging Chicago artist of 2010 from the list on the right!

I know, it’s a long list, but that’s what our jury of scene makers (see list below) passed us – there was hardly any consensus amongst them, they almost all voted for different artists, and that’s why the list is so long. The list also includes the winners for our open poll and our Sonicbids winners.

The band/artist from this list that wins on the poll’s composite chart (i.e. jurors + Deli writers + fans’ votes) will receive a plethora of prizes provided by the sponsors of The Deli. Right now all the artists in the list have accumulated some points from the votes cast by jurors and writers, now it’s the fans and readers’ turn!

JURORS: Here’s the list of jurors in random order: Samantha Gordon (Reviewsic), Matt Baron (Coach House Sounds), Brendan Shanley (Lost In Concert), Amy Dittmeier (Heave Media), Frank Krolicki. (Windy City Rock), Brendan Losch (Count Me Out), Brandon Wetherbee (You, Me, Them, Everybody), Bill Valenta, and Jason Behrends (The Deli)

Grouplove Premiere Video “COLOURS”

Posted on:

Grouplove has released the official video for the track “Colours”, off their self-titled debut EP coming out at the end of January on Canvasback Music. The video resembles a short film that makes a strong connection with the song itself (a bond that most videos fail to make). Its story line is fun and youthful, as you are taken on a cowboy and Indian adventure. It sparks a childlike fuse that makes you want to paint your face and place feathers in your hair. Grouplove is creative and energetic and even more so live! They are set to play a free show at the Bootleg Theatre tonight and the final show of their January residency on the 24th, with a $20 cover and a special guest headliner.

Wes Kirkpatrick

Posted on:

In 2009 Wes Kirkpatrick relocated to Chicago from Denver, and has been working on his solo debut album Naps & Nightmares ever sinces. Recorded with Chad Weis (tour manager and sound engineer for Martin Sexton, Mason Jennings, Ben Kweller) at his new Minneapolis studio "The Devil’s Workshop", this album has been Wes’ driving force and he is finally ready to make it available. "A lot of love, hard work, good times and not so good times went into it. I stuck with it until it was exactly the way I wanted it to be. I didn’t want to rush this one." says Kirkpatrick. The album documents the transition of leaving his friends and family in Colodrado and the process of adapting to life in Chicago.

Naps & Nightmares will be released on March 1st by My Forlorn Wallet Records, and a Chicago release show should be announced shortly.

NYC Hip Hop awesomeness: A.M. Breakups

Posted on:

A.M. Breakups seems like a suitable name for this Brooklyn-based producer. Each beat is so well crafted and mixed, that he undoubtedly neglects countless girlfriends in the creation of any given project. His album “Clink Pieces,” downloadable for free on bandcamp, showcases his dynamic beatmaking prowess paired with a diverse array of underground rap talent. The beats swell triumphantly and jitter with glitchy goodness matching the varying energy of each rapper involved with interspersed moments of cacophony adding a pleasant juxtaposition to the otherwise sweet electronic-edged programming. Be wary that unregulated listening may result in attention starved loved- ones and potentially heartbreaking text messages. – Broke MC

The Caulfield Sisters are back with 2 new songs

Posted on:

Shoegaze Dream Pop is something we’ll never get tired of – and as we are dudes, we’ll add that we find the genre particularly enticing when lady singers with beautiful voices are involved… Brooklyn’s own The Culfield Sisters have been at it for quite some time, but they haven’t lost their verve for gorgeous pop melodies disguised in a thick layer of distortion. The trio just released two new songs – “Caterwauling”, streaming here, and “I See Your Face”, the first new original tracks from this all-girl trio since their debut EP “Say It With Fire” was released several years back. Shows in support of this release will be announced soon. Tracks can be purchased here.

LI artists on the rise: Nature of City

Posted on:

Last week at The Studio at Webster Hall, Long Island-based trio, Nature of City, masterminded by bassist/vocalist Josh Pillbox, played their first show of 2011. NOC donned rubber Nixon masks as the whispering chants and swirls of dissonance of “American Dream” radiated from the stage. The band revealed their faces for the avant-garde take on funk, jazz, and metal, “Big Tommy”, and took a turn for the eerily melodic of “Binomial Pharmaclature,” the ticking time bomb of heavy distortion and haunting vocals of “Daddy Alarm Clock,” and the polyrhythmic duals between syncopated bass lines and shredding guitar solos of “Six Kinds of Wednesday”. Closing with the nightmarish and intricate interplay of pitch-shifting vocals and echoing instrumentation of “Ugly Like Me,” NOC’s set left the audience craving more. The good news is that Nature of City plan to release their debut LP, “Spacemen Need Earthsuits,” (in the picture) in April of this year. – Meijin Bruttomesso

Tristen’s, “Charlatans at the Garden Gate” Review

Posted on:

“Tame that nasty shrew cause she knows what you’re up to/you gotta keep her thin and hungry so she’s eager for your love.” So begins folk pop songstress Tristen’s first full-length, Charlatans at the Garden Gate (through American Myth Recordings), which plays out like a modern fairy tale as she references dark jungles, court jesters and tadpoles. As a synthesizer blares prettily, she sings the opener “Eager for Your Love” (which you can download for free here) in poignant, honeyed vocals that set the stage for the entire LP.

Traditionalist in melody and original in lyrics that have a poetic appeal, the album unfolds 11 tracks in an illustrative, story-like manner amidst folky acoustic strumming, plucky keys (“Matchstick Murder”) and sporadic suggestions of country influence (“Heart and Hope to Die”). Though Charlatans has indie darling appeal, the soaring, bell-like vocals have a maturity and a powerful quality that would mainstream well. And while there is no shortage of finesse – from beautiful background harmonies to the use of strings, like on “Wicked Heart” – one of the album’s best qualities is the sense of humor that quietly creeps into the instrumentation. It comes out occasionally with a flamboyancy and fullness in the vocals and instrumentation that is reminiscent of The Pretenders, or when she channels Nancy Sinatra with cooing sweet talk, like in “Baby Drug,” or the country-influenced bounce in the percussion.

Charlatans simply proves that Tristen knows how to do what she does, and she does it well, making a retro style fresh and satisfying both the desire for lyrical depth and beautifully-crafted melodies. The playful speculations about love, even when on the rocks, aren’t heavy or literal, but artfully masked in metaphors, and as a result, the album is expressive and meaningful without being too weighed down.

The Armchairs Leading the Freak Out at KFN Jan. 16

Posted on:

The Armchairs simply want to have a good time, and they want you to have a good time! You found the gang at the top of their game when they released 2010’s Science and Advice (which you can purchase inside an artistically sound travel pillow here, but that should not be a surprise since they are part of the wonderfully creative Punk Rock Payroll family). They joined forces with Ape School’s Michael Johnson helping with mixing to create an album that is a giant leap forward in production for the relatively young outfit pulling together a joyously madcap jaunt through 60’s and 70’s influenced psych-pop. Joining them in making the crowd freak out will be Virtual Virgin. Since emerging onto the local music scene, the group has been creating heart-pumping dance tracks and symphonic serenades that tantalize the senses while dabbling in vibrant multimedia work. (Check out their official video for “Adam & Eve” below.) Rounding out the lineup will be Brooklyn’s Horse’s Mouth and Paper Masques, a psych-folk project from Zelda Pinwheel’s founder Stephen Quaranta. Pithy Sweet EP Release and free download!

Posted on:

Pithy Sweet, a trio from Fullerton, puts a modern edge on psychedelic rock. Influenced by bands like The Velvet Underground, The Who, and The Black Keys, their sound is reminiscent of The Black Angels with a more upbeat twist. Ben Kent(vox/guitar), Evan Novorot(bass), and Robert Burrison(drums) have been playing music together since they were 16.

The band just released their EP "Hole In My Pocket" on the 13th. Consisting of 4 tracks, it begins with the pulsating and progressive tune "Bring It On", and follows with the more alternative "Fight To This Song", electrifying and angst-ridden. The third track, "Freeze", is nostalgic with funky, playful guitar riffs. "Stella" resonates airy reverbs and a hypnotic 60’s feel.

Get a free download of "Fight to This Song" here, and buy the album here. Pithy Sweet will be playing a show at La Cave in Costa Mesa on the 8th of February…so mark your calenders now!

Grandchildren’s First Philly Show of 2011 at The Ox Jan. 15

Posted on:

Philly’s own electro pop ensemble Grandchildren are taking over The Ox tonight. It will be their first Philly show in 2011. It was a big 2010 for these guys with the release of their stellar long-awaited debut LP Everlasting, a quickly growing fan base and plenty of media love. Hopefully this year will only bring more success to these guys. And maybe even some new music? Grandchildren’s live show is not to be missed, and if you have yet to catch them live you are in for a treat. The band’s technical proficiency is a sight to be seen and the rotating stage setup highlights their LP’s diverse but always captivating songs. The multiple drum kits drive the set while band leader Aleks Martray sits back with his acoustic guitar adding his touches to the hypnotic soundscapes. I had the pleasure of seeing Grandchildren play The Ox for our Best of Philly Showcase 2010. It was a tight fit on the stage, and their sound could barely be contained within the warehouse space. Looking forward to hearing them through The Ox’s newish sound system! The Ox, (you should already know or ask a friend), 8pm, $5, All AgesAdam G.
