Alt Rock holiday bill at Pianos on 12.19 with Social Hero, Blackbells + more

Posted on:

On Sunday, December 19, NYC’s Pianos will be filled with holiday cheer and the rock ‘n roll spirit of four of New York’s top alt rock bands, during a show organized by The Deli’s pwn rocking grrrl/writer Meijin. Heating up the LES venue with their small-band, big-sound, sultry rock is the mighty duo, The Courtesy Tier. Blackbells take the stage and continue to ring in the rock with their psychedelic, retro-vibes, and Apollo Run will stun with heartwarming harmonies and dramatic dynamics. Social Hero (pictured) tops off the evening with heavier riffs and wild stage antics. The show is sure to be a highlight of the winter and a perfect way to close 2010. Doors are at 8pm; show is 21+ and $10.

Oh No No EP release tonight!

Posted on:

Brave the weather tonight and stop by The End to catch Oh No No celebrating the release of their EP, Tren Del Sexo (Sex Train). The Nashville group plays a rough, still-developing hybrid of indie-blues rock, but it’s bound to be a good time and the EP’s title alone makes the set worth checking out. Plus, The Great Collide is on the bill. Their instrumentalists are talented, the back-and-forth vocals of Jane Lee and Wyatt Wolfram are pretty and melodic, and they put on a good live show. Max & the Wild Things will be bringing their lackadaisical alt-country to the lineup as well, and Kat Smo will be there pounding out a few tunes on the keys. Show starts around 9 p.m. – Jessica Pace

Eulogies LP “Tear The Fences Down” to be released 1.18.11

Posted on:

Eulogies, known for their calming, mellow and melodic sound, has announced the release for their 3rd album off of Dangerbird Records, titled "Tear The Fences Down". Eulogies’ songs always have a joyful mood to them, but this record is dedicated to a tragic event that frontman Peter Waker experienced last year, after living in anguish and pain over the death of his best friend’s 4 year old son.

"In May of 2008 i experienced the ultimate high of my life when my son was born. Instantly everything was noticeably richer. music that i had listened to hundreds of times suddenly had more depth and layers to it than ever before. My life was full of a deep love i had never dreamed of. Just 7 days later, i got a call from my best friend and business partner, my brother from another mother, that his 4-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. I felt the floor drop out from under me. Talk about the universe speaking. There is no more poignant example of yin and yang in one’s life than this. After what happened in July of 2009 my emotions–my heart–my life–were all blown to smithereens. It took months to untangle my insides to the point that i could sit down with a pencil and a guitar and confront what I had been through, but when I did I began to see the light again after more than a year of deep-rooted torment. these songs became my lifeline. this is a diary of the trauma of war, and ultimately a way out of those horrific depths", said Walker.

"Tear The Fences Down" will be released on January 18th. For now, you can listen to the single "You Hide".

Doveman announces a different kind of residency at Le Poisson Rouge

Posted on:

Doveman is one of the artists who best incarnates the Deli-invented genre of "Mellow Core" – see our Top 300 mellow Core chart here. His songs are too slow and moody to be affiliated with the simple "Pop" genre, but too sophisticatedly poppy to be categorized under the "Singer Songrwriter" label. One thing is out of doubt though, they are mellow – very mellow for that matter, but with an edge. Now, isn’t "core" a word that has come to express some kind of edge? There you go then, Mellow Core! (Way better than Soft-Core that kinda porny…). The bird man is actually in very good company in the Mellow Core NYC "niche" – featuring other incredibly talented artists we love like Lia Ices, Chris Garneau, Dark Dark Dark, and Twin Sister.
Doveman just announced that he will be taking part to "The Burgundy Stain Sessions" at Le Poisson Rouge, a monthly series of collaborative concerts featuring Doveman and friends. These shows will be a forum for the artist and his friends to try out new material, showcase new bands, explore new collaborations, and drink. Each month there will be a different set of guests (although there will be plenty of repeat performers) a completely new show, and as the series goes on, expect to see not just other musicians, but writers, filmmakers, visual artists and more.

P.S. By the way, while I was writing this blurb for some reason I ended up Googling "Mellow Core" to discover that… Reverb Nation now has it among their genres!!! Not only, there is a website called "mellowcore.com"; a band on PureVolume.com says that "they helped pioneer the latest musical genre, Mellow Core" – say what? There’s even a band called "Mellow Core" – although they say they are a mellow punk band – that’s no "mellow core" according to the inventors of the genre, punks!

NYC bands you should check out: Invisible Days – Live at Glasslands, 01.12

Posted on:

We stumbled upon this NYC trio Invisible Days this morning and… welikey! The group (formerly known as Beloved Rogue) just released this new single titled "Solitary Time" on Toilet Records. Recorded in Brooklyn at 282 North Henry Studios and co-produced by David Dill, Solitary Time marks the first release by the Brooklyn band since their debut EP Paularora. Solitary Time is a moody, psych rock mid tempo gem featuring interesting guitar sonic texture involving a heavy use of delay, and a beautiful haunting vocal melody. Think something between Rain Parade or any of the mellower Paisley Underground bands of the psych rock renaissaince of the 80s. The 3 songs on their previously released EP showcase a heavier shoegazer influence. Check them out at Glasslands on 01.12.

Join Us at the Debut of The Deli’s Pipeline Series w/The Notekillers, Electric Tickle Machine and Creepoid at KFN Dec. 16!

Posted on:

So we’re pretty damn psyched for our last showcase of the year! The debut of our Pipeline Series will be kicking off tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The Deli Magazine’s Pipeline Series was created to bring together some of our favorite music acts from different Deli cities so that they can connect with other artists and their fan bases. Creepoid will be opening the festivities and bringing in their beautiful moments of darkness and light to our ears in one of our favorite venues in Philly. They just finished mixing their upcoming debut full length Horse Heaven yesterday which was produced by Kyle “Slick” Johnson, whose engineering and producing credits include Modest Mouse, Wavves, Fischerspooner, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and many more. The album is scheduled for release on January 11 via Ian Records. Electric Tickle Machine will be our full fledged NYC import. Their care-free, raucous tunes contain the best parts of being young, which is most likely one of the reasons why they are a KEXP favorite. As the night gets later and we get drunker and higher, the legendary Notekillers are here to help scramble our brains with their experimental surf-noise rock that was a “big influence” on Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. You can take a gander at our recent review of their latest ambitious album We’re Here to Help here. The long-overdue new effort from our musically talented do-gooders was already named to Philadelphia Inquirer music critic Dan Deluca’s list of Best Local Albums of 2010 (which had plenty of stiff competition this year). The Notekillers’ David First was also recently interviewed by Pitchfork, which you can check out here. We’ll leave you with a few videos below to get you in the mood for tonight, and hopefully the kick-ass bands on the bill, the multiple shots of Irish whiskey and the piles of herb that you consume later will help take you the rest of the way. Cheers! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ (Poster by Annamarya Scaccia)  – Q.D. Tran

UPDATE: No more Night Train tonight so we get some extra time – FLETCHER C. JOHNSON from KING TUFF added to open!
