First Deli Showcase! 1/9 @ Precinct! — Alchemilla, Lesser Knowns, Dan Blakeslee

Posted on:

jan9th

Get ready to rock your face off. The Deli is pleased to present the first show of a January residency at Precinct in Union Sq. Precinct is an awesome venue. Big bar in the front so you can catch the score of the game between sets. It’s got a funky vibe, used to be the police station and who hasn’t ever wanted to drink a beer in a police station. The staff is nice and the food is delish.

Heavy sound with classic-rock roots, female vocalist fronted Alchemilla will be starting off the show with some new tunes, I hear. Lesser Knowns are from New Bedford. They are dance-worthy, and contain strong hints of old school Buddy Holly rock ‘n’ roll and Weezer. You can download their most recent album here. Dan Blakeslee is a multi-faceted artist with a soulful and snowy voice and powerful lyrics.

NYC Band on the rise: The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger

Posted on:

There aren’t really right or wrong ways to discover a great local band, but the way I found out about The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger was as bizarre as their name. I was browsing through some Portland, Oregon venue listings in search of artists to nominate for our Portland upcomin poll, when I stumbled upon this duo – what the heck were they doing playing so far from home? I actually wished for a second they were based in Portland (as I was having trouble finding poll nominees…) but no, their Myspace profile is pretty clear about the band’s location: New York, NY. Now that I think of it, listening to the duo’s celestial alt-folk and their beautiful harmonizations, their sophisticated, dreamy songs and lirycs reminiscent of awesome early Momus, I realized that this was actually a Christmas present from the Gods of music (or, rather, from the One Christian God’s music department…) Well, thank you so much whoever it was, this made my (holi)day!

P.S. After writing this I found out that this is Sean Lennon’s new project, which partially spoiled the surprise…

Cannoneers of The New Command- January Residency at The Echo

Posted on:

There’s nothing like a band that is brand spankin’ new. Cannoneers of The New Command, or Cannoneers for short, formed in Spring of 2009, making them relatively fresh on the scene. The quartet resonates pure, solid rock with a bit of a pop twist (think The White Stripes or The Hives), with a garage rock sound clearly influenced by rock ‘n’ roll bands from the U.K.

Cannoneers have some new music on the way, and you can get a few licks by going to their upcoming shows at The Echo. They have booked a January residency for Monday nights, playing with some familiar local bands each week. They are finishing up their debut album, so stay tuned for some amazing music!

Unwrap an Early Gift of Cuddle Magic and Oh! Pears at JB’s Dec. 22

Posted on:

Celebrate the magic of the holidays a little early this year thanks to avant garde ensemble Cuddle Magic. With a membership that can hit double digits providing strings, percussion, a vibraphone, clarinet, and then some to their musical arsenal, they’re set to play to the tune of the Twelve Days of Christmas. And they even have a Festivus of lamps and a 3-foot tall plastic penguin for their stage arrangement! Both their self-titled debut and masterful album Picture are available on West Philly’s FYO Records. With expertly crafted instrumentation and chamber pop sensibilities, the band wraps up an exciting year of shows tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. But since their currently working on overdubs in the studio with producer Bryce Goggin who has worked with the Ramones, Phish, Pavement and many more, it’s sure to set the tone for bigger things to come. Joining them this evening will be Oh! Pears, otherwise known as Corey Duncan and his elaborately crafted orchestral ensemble. After a year’s worth of work, the former Pattern Is Movement guitarist has had plenty of practice refining the live performance of his symphonic debut Fill Yr Lungs. And its beautiful tunes are sure to bring some enchantment and wonderment to your ears. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

LI Artists on the rise: Rice Cultivation Society plays Arlene + Rock Shop

Posted on:

A staple of Long Island’s growing movement of DIY artists, Rice Cultivation Society has been the writing and recording vehicle for song-writer/multi-instrumentalist Derek Smith since 2005. RCS’ music is notable for it’s incorporation of diverse musical elements and genres, such as delta-blues, guitar rock, found sounds, jazz, pop, and folk. The lyrics often paint a picture of the world in which every experience, person, and thing has a vivid and inexplicable interior life, where ideas and events connect where they are least expected to. The combination creates songs with an overall sense of warmth and character that invite the listener to get lost inside of their twists and turns, both in meaning and form. Rice Cultivation’s 4th album “Leaves Again” was recorded in the summer of 2010 . The stark and often minimalist approaches of previous albums are inverted into lush full band arrangements, and tend to venture much more into rock territory (such as "Seaturtles" and "Louis Leakey’s Sink").Rice Cultivation Society will be performing at Arlene’s Grocery on Wednesday (12/22) at Arlene’s Grocery, and at The Rock Shop on February 26. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Get PRIMITIVE w/Birth Noise and Acid Kicks at KFN Dec. 21!

Posted on:

When you get primitive, things tend to get pretty debaucherous, and that’s what I’m hoping to happen tonight at KFN. PRIMITIVE Presents is putting on a FREE event tonight at one of my favorite watering holes, and it promises to give all the punk, garage, metal, grunge, noise and waves to make us do very bad things. Acid Kicks will be bringing their “dream punk” as well as three bassists and a drummer, but I don’t think that they’ll have a Spinal Tap moment searching for KFN’s stage. Well, I wouldn’t mind if they did, and if you’ve been in the backroom upstairs before, then you should know that stranger things can happen behind closed doors. Birth Noise will be joining the festivities, and their name probably says it all about what you’ll be in for this evening, but I’ll share with you the video below to get your ears ready. (It’s pretty gnarley – right. Yeah – I think so too.) PRIMITIVE DJs Jane Pain and Laura Lawless also have plenty of mayhem to help us get in the mood to fuck shit up! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 9pm, FREE, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
