Gangland Buries Its Own @ Velvet Lounge – Jan 6

Gangland Buries Its Own

It may take a few days to nurse yourself back to health after your New Year’s party hangover, but I’ve got news for you:  The music scene waits for no one.  So be prepared, stock up on water and junk food so you can recover as soon as possible.  2011 is going to be a great year for local live music.

And what better way to get it started than with a night of new (but classic) D.C. post-hardcore?  Sounding reminiscent of a heavier Sonic Youth, with female/male vocal tradeoffs and no shortage of guitar breakdowns, Gangland Buries Its Own will be playing at Velvet Lounge on Thursday, January 6.  (Doors 7:30PM/Show 9PM/21+/$8)  Memories From the Space Age will be the opener.

Make a resolution you can keep this year:  Rock till you drop and support local music.  -Jarrett

Noteworthy NYC Artists from Best of NYC Submissions: Cheese on Bread

Posted on:

Prominent in the city’s anti-folk scene, Cheese on Bread’s songs sound raw and unfinished. This is probably due to the fact that the duo recorded their album in their bathroom – initially because of purely economic reasons, later from habit. But because of their low-tech recordings, the songs sound more authentic, like if they were recorded by a couple of friends, and thanks to this the people and places in their stories sound more familiar and real. They’re silly and undeniably charming in a Kimya Dawson way, their songs bearing the same honesty and emotion as high school lovebirds. – Katherine Bennet

Noteworthy NYC Artists from Best of NYC Submissions: Beyondo

Posted on:

With an impressive list of recording credits, including indie rock legends TV on the Radio, Regina Spektor, and Pete Yorn, Eric Biondo still has time to front his own modern big-band, wittily named “Beyondo”. Biondo adds trumpet and a falsetto akin to fellow Brooklynite Justin Rice (Bishop Allen), to reggae-inspired down-tempo tracks. Following the pattern of many of his songs, “Gambler” is calypso jazz, structured around quick African drumming, a full acoustic back-up band, maracas, and funky organ chords. In traditional jazz style, his songs are built off improvisation, and have energetic, spontaneous, and definitely danceable attributes. – Katherine Bennett

Noteworthy NYC Artists from Best of NYC Submissions: Telltale

Posted on:

Telltale play with the same macabre overtones as goth-wave god Robert Smith (their lead singer even looking a little like him, with wiry black hair and sunken eyes, entirely black ensemble) use as much feedback as noise-pop pioneers The Jesus and Mary Chain, and drown in distortion along with My Bloody Valentine, quavering vocals secondary to the calculated chaos of the guitar. Atonal walls of sound employ reverberation to create shimmering ripples of guitar echo, layering noise upon noise until the sound becomes a tangible presence, shaking your skin and quickening your heartbeat. – Katherine Bennett

Noteworthy NYC Artists from Best of NYC Submissions: Amber Rubarth

Posted on:

After quitting a woodwork apprenticeship in Nevada three years ago, Amber Rubarth picked up the guitar for the first time and started writing songs, and gaining a steady fanbase, ever since. Her soulful, thick, unique alto reflects the blues influence of idol Tom Waits, and her songs tell stories in traditional folk fashion; in “Washing Day,” winner of the 2010 New Song Mountain Stage Contest, she sings of lost love, “too much whiskey, too much smoke/ Last night’s tears hang on my coat.” She will be recording a new release with Grammy Award-winning producer Jaquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Norah Jones). Check out the top 2 top songs on the Myspace list.

Charlotte Martin at Bootleg Theater

Posted on:

Charlotte Martin‘s piano-driven songs are calming and timeless, with sweet sensational vocals. Her latest album, "Piano Trees", is a 24 track instrumental piece transitioning from lighter, twinkling sounds to deeper, darker keys, leaving the listener without words but full of thoughts and feelings. She is currently working on her fourth studio album, and she will be playing some of her new work at The Bootleg Theater on the 29th of January. So if a night of escape is needed, this is a perfect show to sip on a glass of red and enjoy a flowing, melodic performance by a well-respected artist.

Night Jewel at The Echo- December 31st

Posted on:

I’ve always thought it would be great to celebrate New Years Eve by warping back into time where synths and funky bass lines ruled dance clubs and echoed in unision out onto the streets of Hollywood. Fortunately instead of having time to find a time machine, I found Nite Jewel. If you’re a fan of 80s new wave and pop then Romona Gonzalez has your name written all over her Casio keyboard and Roland drum machine. Night Jewel is a perfect combination of the Tom Tom Club and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. If you find yourself on the Sunset Strip on the eve of the New Year, catch the 8-track shoegazer live at The Echo.

Man Man Open for Gogol Bordello at E Factory Dec. 29

Posted on:

While I tend to shy away from the larger shows these days and prefer to hide out at home or in the local smaller music venues, I can’t help but be drawn to the warehouse space of the Electric Factory tonight for Gogol Bordello. Eugene Hutz will be in town with his caravan of musical misfits spreading the gospel of their old world meets new world order Gypsy punk which should be reason enough to pull me out of this winter hermit-ish state that I’ve been in (hard not to be with all this goddamn cold and snow!). But admittedly, I’ll really be there for our local madmen clad in white Man Man. It’s been a while since we’ve had a chance to catch a live performance from Philly’s favorite sons. They’ve taken a little hiatus from touring this past year working on their upcoming new album in Omaha. And leading purveyor of chaos Honus Honus a.k.a. Ryan Kattner has certainly been staying busy recently with his new side project and indie supergroup Mister Heavenly, which also features Nick Diamond (Islands and Unicorns) and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse). Mister Heavenly announced that they signed to Sub Pop at the end of last month even before playing a single show (that I know of), but it’s not surprising with each members’ indie music pedigree. And when they finally made their first appearance opening for Passion Pit on the Left Coast, the band had in tow actor and Diamond’s buddy, Michael Cera, on bass, which created quite a furious media storm on the internet. Also judging by the live footage of Mister Heavenly’s new material, the tunes are pretty badasssss with Kattner and Diamond trading off on vocals accompanied by their self-proclaimed “Doom Wop” arrangements. I’d suggest all to catch Man Man when you can because you never know what Kattner’s busy calendar will hold for their live performance schedule in the future. But luckily with a new Man Man album in the works for Anti- Records, there should be at least a tour to follow. Toms River, New Jersey’s (and I wish that they were Philly’s) River City Extension will also be opening the evening which is definitely an added bonus. I had a chance to catch them last year at The Fire, and could instantly tell that their folk-ish sound fuel-injected with plenty of horns had a bright future. Glad to see River City Extension getting their opportunity on the big stage in front of what should be a lively audience. Already wishing right now that the local support acts will have longer sets. mewithoutYou Performing Two Intimate SOLD OUT Shows at The Barbary and JB’s Dec. 29 & 30

Posted on:

mewithoutYou are gearing up for two very intimate and special holiday shows as a treat for the hometown brethren who have been supporting them since their inception nearly a decade ago. Tonight they perform at The Barbary for an all ages show before playing a 21+ extravaganza at JB’s on Thursday. While core members of the band have generally stayed the same, the sound has evolved drastically since the start. The band has, and continues to be capable of creating scathing musical arrangements with biting lyrics, but with their third album Brother, Sister released back in 2006, they began to explore their musical horizons creating a softer, more pensive side to compliment their aggressive post-hardcore beginnings. Throughout the band has been carried by Aaron Weiss’ hyperactive spoken-word delivery of his natural and naturalistic poems. With the release of 2009’s It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All a Dream! It’s Alright, Weiss almost exclusively displays his charmingly imperfect singing that radically shifted the sound of mewithoutYou. Over the 10 years of their existence, the band has evolved from bare bones ferocious rock group to orchestrated folk ensemble. These holiday shows should be a great time to see mewithoutYou’s versatility and experience the polarity of their ever-changing sound. Time will tell what their next release will sound like, but until then, come out to one or both of these very intimate shows. Hopefully you already have your tickets already because both events are completely SOLD OUT. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 6:30pm, Sold Out, All Ages; Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, Sold Out, 21+Adam G.

Manhattan Murder Mystery Dec. 30th at Pehrspace

Posted on:

Manhattan Murder Mystery‘s recordings have a layer of grit and dirt thicker than your grandmother’s attic. Their guitar driven post punk sound is topped off by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Teardrop, who sounds like a (slightly more) well adjusted version of Glen Danzig. Don’t believe me? Then maybe it’s time to have a listen to "Your Mother’s Neck", a surprisingly poppy song with a hummable hook about going crazy and murdering your mother.

The band will be sending 2010 off in style with a show at Pehrspace on Dec 30th. M31, The Mormons, and Kill Kill Kill will be joining the fun.

Weathervane’s “Shaking Through” Kickstarter Fundraiser Ending Soon

Posted on:

Weathervane’s “Shaking Through” Kickstarter Fundraiser Part Deux is coming to a close. You have a few more days to contribute to the homegrown music/video project as well as the chance to own some neat items from your favorite “Shaking Through” artists like Reading Rainbow, The Antlers, Sharon Van Etten and many more. And if you have some serious bucks ($2,000), you can actually receive “Executive Producer” credits for an episode of your choice. But we know. Times are tight. Donate what you can. It will still be greatly appreciated. You can also help out tonight by showing up at KFN. Turning Violet Violet have offered to donate their earnings from this evening’s performance. All donations are tax deductible. (Well, maybe not for tonight’s show. But if the IRS actually hunts you down for a measly $5, then there are definitely some serious problems with government spending that we should all be worried about. However, we think Brian McTear shouldn’t mind printing up a receipt for you.) Thanks. – The Deli Staff

Machine Gun Joe Ready to Warm You Up at Millcreek Tavern Dec. 29

Posted on:

So how were everyone’s holidays? Even though they’re just about over by now, that doesn’t mean the mood is over. Machine Gun Joe clearly know what’s up. Even in their noisier moments, there’s a kind of wintry hush in their music. The detached quality of the vocals, the low-key acoustics and occasional banjo, offer a taste of that universal feeling of driving home in the stillness of the snow at the end of the holiday. The lyrics seem intensely felt and at least a little confessional. Like "Excuses" which talks about (you guessed it) excuses and mistakes. "Summer Sun" may point to the contrary as far as the whole winter feeling goes, but even the quieter spaces in that one prove the most affecting. But don’t forget about Levee Drivers though. They prove themselves just as capable of balladry, but a little more fiery overall. Like Johnny Cash electrified and revamped. Also, stay tuned for Polar Ice Cap. Head on over to the Millcreek Tavern to warm up, and you’ll probably be glad you did. Mill Creek Tavern, 4200 Chester Ave, 9pm, $8, 21+ – Joe Poteracki
