Bridges and powerlines about to release new album

Posted on:

Meeting in New York City in late 2005, the members of Bridges and Powerlines realized a common love for intricately arranged three-minute pop songs. After releasing the debut EP and touring extensively, in the last year the band has been recording their follow-up album ‘Eve’, which represents the culmination of their thoughts on life prior to the changes of September 11. With producer Kieran Kelley (known best for his work on Sufjan Stephens’ ‘Illinois’) and a host of guests including members of Antony and the Johnsons, indie troubadour Will Stratton, and even their friend Steven Harris of 80s arena-legends The Cult, the band spent 3 months painstakingly creating the record “they wanted to make their whole lives.” CD release party is scheduled at Pianos on January 14.

Wednesday Night Before Thanksgiving Live Music Wrap-up!

Posted on:

Alrighty now, it’s the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, historically one of the heaviest travel nights of the year. But who doesn’t love a drink with friends and family after a long trip (or on a Wednesday)? Well, there are plenty of places for you to do that at this evening with entertaining folks who want to play you some tunes. At the top of the list is the psychedelic noise-rock of Bardo Pond at Kung Fu Necktie. They have a new self-title album coming out January 11, 2011 on Fire Records (though they need to update their website because it says Dec. 6, but don’t believe it). You can check out and download their new track below called “Don’t Know About You”! TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb are pulling double duty tonight – first for free at Triumph w/Toy Soldiers and then off to The Fire where Levee Drivers, The Lawsuits and Penrose will already be warming up the crowd. BTW: TJ Kong’s drummer Dan Martino told me a funny story about myself from this past Halloween. I was dressed as Sulu from classic Star Trek this year. (Not because I’m a serious Trekkie, but because I think George Takai hilarious, and I was also capitalizing on my Asianness.) Apparently, one of Martino’s friends complimented me on my rad costume, and I freaked him out because I told him that I was trying to be Captain Kirk. I have no recollection of that conversation. I kind remember saying “thank you”, but the rest of it is a blur. However, it sounds like something I might say for shits and giggles. I just wanted to let Martino’s buddy know if he happens to be reading this. I’m not really that crazy. I don’t really think that I can pull off being William Shatner or have any delusions of grandeur doing so. Oh Jameson – you evil seductress. OK, back to more things to do tonight. Sean Hoots is opening for blue-eyed soul man Mutlu at the Tine Angel. This show is certainly an older XPNers’ wet dream. Our man Bill McThrill will be attending the Tim and Eric show at The Troc. Unfortunately, I don’t get the Cartoon Network from the random cable that comes through my window and magically gives me channels so I’m not really sure what they are all about, but apparently they are hilarious, from Philly and most people have a clue because this event is sold out. And if you enjoy a more somber mood while kicking a few back, then Oubliette Ensemble is performing at the Highwire Gallery. That’s my wrap-up for this evening, and if you see me around tonight, don’t believe anything that I say. It might be just one of those nights. Cheers! – Q.D. Tran

NYC Hip Hop Artists on the rise: Hot Sugar

Posted on:

Hot Sugar is the pseudonym of New York City based multi-instrumentalist and one man production army Nick Koenig. A session musician for producers including J-Zone, Koenig has a talent for creating lush, textured recordings combining live instrumentation and esoteric samples. Koenig uses samples as disparate as ambient wind noise and French pornography sound tracks to create head nodding instrumentals. Hot Sugar’s debut EP, Muscle Milk, is scheduled to drop next year. As a teaser, Koenig recently leaked two tracks, the Javelinesque “The Seagull” and the Hip-Hopish “Color Wars” featuring soulful crooner Aaron Livingstone. – Nick Haycock

Essex Channel 250th Song

Posted on:

Travis Lee Wiggins may be the most prolific musician I’ve ever come across. He is in several musical projects, but his main outlet is Essex Channel. The band just celebrated the release of it’s 250th song. The track is called "The Good Times". It is a perfect Thanksgiving track, and the band’s first to utilize saxophone, clarinet, and tuba.

Free Energy Power Hour – Episode 3

Posted on:

Free Energy is back with the third episode of their Free Energy Power Hour. We kind of want them to get huge just to see Donny Smeads rollin’ in their entourage to the “hottest” LA clubs on TMZ. (We hope that they would never ditch Donny.) The video also features DFA’s “newest artist” Texas Scott (feat. Ol’ Tuck). We think Corn and Peas should definitely be signed next! – The Deli Staff

Where Is My Mind?: Reading Rainbow

Posted on:

If you’ve been following The Deli, then last year’s Best of Philly Poll Winners Reading Rainbow (a.k.a. Rob Garcia and Sarah Everton) are no strangers to you. We’ve had great time following all the accolades and opportunities that have come their way this past year. Today marks the release of Reading Rainbow’s Prism Eyes (which can be purchased here) on Hozac Records, but this dynamic duo/husband and wife team (“like Sonic Youth”) already has a new split 7” ready for release in a few weeks. Though life has been pretty hectic, Garcia and Everton were nice enough to let us pick their brains about what’s been going on in the Reading Rainbow camp as well as embracing the dumbness of tweeting, Ancient Astronauts, Antique Road Show, and much, much more here.

The Boston Music Awards are a big deal. Again, this year they are being held at the beautiful Liberty Hotel (used to be a jail, it’s a really sweet hotel, worth it enough to check it out if you are into design) BUT this is about music. They will have live performances by DOM, Barry & The Remains, Jennie Dee & the Deelinquents, Mystery Roar, Kingsley Flood, Kon, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and many others. In the meantime, VOTE! This is a democratic country (we think) so exercise your right!

Many acts featured in the Deli are up for awards, including Sodafrog,The Organ Beats, Jesse Dee, Club D’elf and the one and only, Tim Gearan.

Voting closes at 5:00PM on Monday November 29th. Winners will be announced December 5 at the Liberty Hotel.

Posted on:

It may be Thanksgiving this weekend but no amount of Turkey will apparently stop live music. For those sticking around the city this weekend, here are a few selections from the calender.

Tonight at the Stork Club in Oakland Man/Miracle will be playing with Seatlle’s Lonsome Shack, 8pm.

Friday night dance away whatever weight you may have gained the previous day out at the Knockout where Joshua Rampage of Maus Haus will be testing his mettle as an in house DJ, 10pm.

Saturday catch the dark and drone-y psych rock of Tokyo Raid at Cafe du Nord with The Secret Secretaries, Nectarine Pie, and Fox & Woman, 8pm.

Just a brief look this week. Enjoy your holiday!

Tape Deck Mountain to release EP early 2011 + upcoming show at Bootleg

Posted on:

If you have any appreciation for reverberation, Tape Deck Mountain might be right up your alley. They play distant sounding indie music with a trancey beach vibe. Following "Ghost", their full-length album released last year, is their 4 track EP "Secret Serf". Slated to be released January of 2011 on Lefse Records, "Secret Serf" echoes honesty and intimacy, reflecting frontman Travis Trevisan’s recent battle with poverty. They played at the CMJ Festival last month, and will be playing a show at the Bootleg Theater on December 7th.

Kina Grannis headlines the El Ray Dec. 10th – Free download

Posted on:

With all my indie cred, sometimes it’s ok to give into pure pop. It’s a guilty pleasure. Kina Grannis is one of those artists; I’ll refrain from naming the others out of sheer number. The songwriting is sweetly pure and there doesn’t seem to be this forced pretense you find with other artists in the genre, at least not on most of her songs. She independently released her debut LP, Stairwells, in Feburary of this year and has landed her music on a few TV shows like General Hospital and College Life. With a resume like hers, I was a little surprised to see that her Dec. 10th show at the El Ray will be her first major headliner. It should be an interesting night from this girl from Mission Viejo.
