Deli CD of the Month: Hooray for Earth – Pianos Residency in November

Posted on:

Hooray for Earth crafts a sonic galaxy of varied synthpop tunes with a rock ‘n’ roll flair on its latest EP Momo. The six celestial songs on the EP demonstrate that the band has come light-years from its Boston origins. On Momo, the band reduced the weighty, noisy drone that was pervasive on its self-titled album and Cellphone EP to welcome a lighter, mellower fare that elevates listeners to a higher plane. The euphoric “Surround By Your Friends” sets the tone of the EP with its expansive, sprightly synths and transcendent vocals that greets listeners with open arms. Although the EP is more pop-oriented than its predecessors, on “Comfortable, Comparable,” the band doesn’t pass up on the opportunity to shred and the quick turn in style works in its favor. The quartet really excels in assembling builds to fantastic, epic releases that feels like you’re racing through space, and at the end of the song, you’ve finally arrived at your destination: Earth. – Don’t miss the band at one of their residency shows at Pianos on November 10, 17 and 24. Robbers on High Street announce album, play Rock Shop on 11.13

Posted on:

After entering the studio in October 2009 to begin work on their third full-length album, Brooklyn’s Robbers on High Street are finally getting ready to release "Hey There Golden Hair." While the veterans of the band, Morgan King (bass, vocals), Steven Mercado (guitar, vocals) and frontman Ben Trokan still remain, they have been playing as a five-piece for the last three years with drummer Mikey Post and keyboardist David Sherman. Produced by Trokan with engineer Matt Shane (Flight of the Conchords, Rosanne Cash), this was the current line-up’s first foray into a proper recording session, drawing little help from the outside save that of a horn section borrowed from the Daptone House of Soul. You can catch Robbers on High Street playing their newest songs at The Rock Shop on Nov. 13 and at Bowery Electric on Nov. 23.

Tigersapien play Glasslands with French Horn Rebellion – 11.06

Posted on:

On the eve of Saturday 11.06 some seriously ground (and ass) shaking low frequencies are scheduled to affect the area around 289 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg when a bunch of electro-dance bands including French Horn Rebellion, Tigersapien and Phonetag will take the stage at Glasslands. We covered FHR in more than one occasion, so we’ll spend a few words for Tigersapien (pictured), a NYC-Philly based quartet that offers some pretty dark electro-dance, that – simplifying – could be described as a "Daft Punked" version of Prodigy.Wear thick socks if you are planning on attending! Advance tickets here.

Nite Nite @ The End, 11/1/10

Posted on:

For anyone still under the impression that Nashville’s music scene is a boys-only club, then Monday night’s show at The End would be the cue for a collective, “like hell it is.” By the time the members of the neo-pop trio Nite Nite took the stage, the all-female group Hot Cha Cha and female fronted Yumi and the System proved that chicks can rock (and not in the Taylor Swift, teardrops-on-a-guitar way).

After an extended sound check, it was a little before midnight when Nite Nite actually began. Blame it on the fact that it was Monday, or that the weather was becoming increasingly appropriate for the season, but the crowd was sparse. However, in the grand tradition of Southern musician hospitality, all of the opening bands were front and center cheering on the headliner.

Looking like a less homeless Mary-Kate Olsen and a more attractive Lady Gaga, lead vocalist Davis started the set with a gothic-inspired dreamy pop sound that was evident throughout the show. Her voice is completely unexpected, yet impressive in its Debbie Harry-esque tone. Bassist Matthew Brown and keyboardist/vocalist Sarah-Brooks Levine were not to be outshined by the charismatic Davis as they too looked like they could be extras on the set of “Gossip Girl” (albeit ones who are damn good at playing their instruments). Just by watching them perform, one can tell that there’s nothing accidental about Nite Nite. From the tailored rock chic to the Euro-pop-infused sound, they’ve found the formula for attracting a cult following.

There’s a theatric and campy quality to a Nite Nite show that makes Blondie and The Cure references seem completely fitting. However, they are unique enough to establish their own sound – one that will either alienate or convert fans of the genre. The whole uber-hipster thing may be off-putting to some, but it’s refreshing to see something not yielding an acoustic guitar get some attention in this town. Whether you love them, hate them or just want to throw your iPhone at them, Nite Nite’s eerie blend of gothic-pop is the perfect excuse to try acid. You know, hypothetically. – Krystal Wallace

Creeping Weeds and In Grenada at KFN Nov. 3

Posted on:

Creeping Weeds are an indie rock crew that we like, and we are glad to see that they are really back from their hiatus. They had gained a bunch of local buzz for their LP, We Are All Part of a Dream You’re Having, which tinkled and jangled with the best of them. Their fresh yet nostalgic sound recalls contemporaries like The Unicorns and The Boy Least Likely To as well as predecessors like Built to Spill and Pavement. One would be hard pressed to read a review that didn’t include a Pavement reference, but one may be even more hard pressed to ignore the similarities. They are opening up for In Granada, a young band with a big sound. Singer Jesse Leyh reminds me of The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon, but In Grenada are drenched more in reverb and rely on atmosphere and harmonies as they do anything else. This show tonight at KFN seems to be filled with acts that really should, and possibly could get some more national buzz. Make sure to come and support them so they don’t all get super sad and break up. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ – Adam G.
