CD of the Month: Project Film

Posted on:

Sam McAllister is an ambitious young musician and business owner. As the founder of Tandem Shop he has released four albums over the last two years including albums by Mr. Bear and Honest Engines. The label releases are thoughtful and well-produced, and his latest release just happens to be his own. When he partners musically with his high school friend Megan Frestedt the duo Project Film emerges. The duos debut album called Chicago finds the duo presenting an exercise in indie pop. At times the sound is soft and sweet ("Sun"), and at others bouncy and fun ("Cut Outs"). The album was recorded in McAllisters studio apart in the Fall and Winter of 2009, and documents the two worlds that they have existed in. The album contrasts growing up in Minneapolis and relocating to Chicago. Chicago is a beautifully simple and charming duo for a musician and producer that plans to do big things here in Chicago.

Project Film released Chicago on November 9th.

Asobi Seksu back with a new album out in February

Posted on:

Asobi Seksu has announced the release of their 4th full length, "Fluorescence", available February 14th in UK/Europe and 15th in North America on CD. After the all acoustic experience of the album "Mirror Shades" (which admittedly raised a few eyebrows), the band returns to their natural shoegazing habitat, with rather satisfying results – you can make up your own mind downloading a free track from the upcoming album here.

“Natural Blossom” by Está Vivo

Posted on:

If winning the most recent poll did not temp you enough to check out the uniquely tropical sounds of Esta Vivo than hopefully this post will. This primarily a project by Ryan McMahon (formerly of Bearries), and as Está Vivo he constructs dense sounds that reminds me a little of Os Mutantes at times. This is especially true in the track "Natural Blossom" below.

Está Vivo’s debut LP, Together We Step, is due out later this year.

NYC Bands you should check out: Woodsy Pride

Cowboys, dude… I mean, if you get the whole cowboy hero thing right, that’s extremely awesome. These adventurous dudes traveling through the desert fighting for a better tomorrow (or maybe to actually survive until tomorrow), smoking a hand rolled cigarette in front of the fire, adjusting their cowboy hats and casually eating beans from the frying pan… what’s cooler, more iconic than that? Sergio Leone got that right, and so do Woodsy Pride, a Brooklyn based trio that plays some kind of haunted Western music with the songwriting skill of Neil Young and the maudit intensity of Nick Cave. These guys make me want to get a horse and a gun and head West – somewhere along the route, a gorgeous lady is waiting  for me to save her. Woodsy Pride just released their debut EP on All Hands Electric with a show at Matchless on 11.01.

A show you shouldn’t miss: Mon Khmer + Hooray for Earth at Pianos, 11.17

Posted on:

Very interesting show at Pianos on November 17 with our current CD of the month Hooray for Earth and Mon Khmer, who were one of our Artist of the month some time last year. For a review of the first band see here. Mon Khmer sound a little bit like Broken Social Scene with better songs – almost like a "perfected" version of the Canadian collective, that tended to compensate a certain songwriting weakness with mind blowing production values. The NYC based group might not have reached the level of complex refinement of BSS’ records, but it definitely navigates very similar waters, inhabited by post-rock influences, textural arrangements, and sober creativity. They should play/tour with our friends The Mobius Band!

Video of Freeway, Jedi Mind Tricks and Friends at The Troc!

Posted on:

The video below recently surfaced this week from a sick lineup of Philly hip hop at The Troc on Oct. 29 to kickoff this past Halloween weekend. Jedi Mind Tricks were headlining the bill with plenty of support from local buddies Freeway, Reef the Lost Cauze, Peedi Crakk, Jakk Frost, Outerspace, Army of the Pharaohs and Burke. But the star of the video is certainly Freeway and his mask. Now, we know already what we’ll be for next year’s Halloween festivities. Look out for an army of Freeways sporting Deli tees! The video was filmed and edited by Jimmy Giambrone. BTW: What’s up with the sausage fest and all the moshing at a hip hop show? Does someone need a hug? Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

Alvin Risk Record Release Show 11/13

Posted on:

‘Washington D.C.’s very own Alvin Risk takes the stage Saturday, November 13th, at U Street Music Hall, for the release of his debut EP The Making Of. Part glow-fi dance party, part electronic opera, The Making Of is a sketchbook into the promising future of the next transformative figure in post-rock music.’ Also on the bill is the gorgeous lush electro artist Painted Face, and Brian Billion, U Street’s resident DJ. It’s gonna be epic. Preview Risk’s EP on Soundcloud.

Tristen to open for Land of Talk and SUUNS, 11/11/10

Posted on:

Indie pop outfit, Land of Talk, will be returning to Nashville to play at The End this Thursday, November 14th. Opening will be local fav singer/songstress, Tristen, along with Montreal-based dark electro rockers, SUUNS. I’d give you some more information about SUUNS right now if my work computer wasn’t misbehaving, but until then, just trust that this will be a stupendous show for anyone who enjoys relatively sombre, yet sometimes uplifting, and always catchy-as-hell, indie pop/rock. And Tristen will be like the rainbow-patterned umbrella in a howling tempest. Go here for more info, and check out this video of Land of Talk when they performed in Nashville last year.–Deli Editor
