Multifaceted metal band Exemption tour East Coast + play Matchless on 12.15

Posted on:

Long Island, New York’s Exemption has done more than mature their sound on their sophomore full-length, and third self-released disc, Public Cemetery Party. Each of the nine tracks not only differs uniquely from one another but sets the band far apart from the current trends of today’s rock and metal bands. The songs are a kaleidoscope of musical styles: thick stoner metal mudslides slam head on into psychedelic landscapes; antehemic pop hooks give way to fiery surf-rock riffs, and crusty blues jams become violent exercises in aggressive funk. The first track “Hyperspiral” is a perfect example of this, moving seamlessly from Mastodon & Torche-esque riffage to euphoric melodies and hooks reminiscent of Rubber Soul. Like Torche, Exemption is not afraid to combine spine-cracking heaviness with bubbly pop-hook sweetness to create moods not often tapped into by new bands. Public Cemetery Party goes on to demonstrate the power trio’s skills as musicians. Their progressive side has earned them comparisons to The Mars Volta, Rush, and King Crimson, but this musical ability combined with their sense of humor at times is more in the vein of Frank Zappa. The band is currently touring the north part of the East coast – they’ll be back in NYC with a show at matchless on 12.15. Repeat Repeat Repeater

Posted on:

I first stumbled upon Repeater at a local dive bar in San Diego. They instantly caught my attention with their stage presence, and the fact that they sounded different than the average So-Cal indie rock band. Their post-punk angst and new wave influence made me think they were from the UK, but in fact they hail from sunny Long Beach! Repeater is reminiscent of a cross between The Cure and At The Drive In, with chiming guitar and keyboard sounds and military-like drums. These guys are definitely a band to keep an eye on.

The 5 piece is currently in the midst of writing their full-length debut, "We Walk From Safety", and their current EP, "The Patterns", is available on iTunes. The band will be playing a show in Hollywood on Monday, November 15th at The Dragonfly. To keep up with their recordings and shows, you can follow them on twitter.

The Americans – EP Release Party at Rockwood Music Hall November 12

Posted on:

The Americans, who are New Yorkers by way of many states, produce a smooth sound that channels piano-driven pop, British Invasion psychedelia, and the delicateness of easy-listening. The band’s new “White EP” opens with a gospel -tinged, elevating “Try (Nobody Wants To),” featuring Daniel Merriweather and sampling Jackie Wilson’s “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher." “The Antidote” and “Not Still in Love” add doo-wop to the mix and are followed by “Diamond,” which intertwines twinkling piano chords and elongated country twangs. “Rooftop Love” alternates between soulful multi-vocal harmonies and call and responses with hymn-like cadences. The Americans will be headlining Rockwood Music Hall this Friday, November 12 for the release of their "White EP" and the music video for "Requiem," the album’s first single and final track, which showcases Sean Lennon. The official celebration begins when The Americans hit the stage at midnight. – Meijin Bruttomesso

Music for the crisp autumn NYC air: Bright Brown

Posted on:

Alex Nahas and Nick Smeraski of Bright Brown bring an ideal soundtrack to the crisp, autumn air. The brooding Brooklyn duo layers humming vocals, a Chapman Stick, keyboards, soft percussion, and a little acoustic guitar. Sounds range from sparse and repetitive like a piece for avant-garde dance to expansive and melodic like the theme from a western where everyone dies in the same pool of blood. Nahas cut his teeth as a founder of the post-rock band Laughingstock. Fans of Brian Eno, Nick Drake, and John Cale should check these guys out. – WSP

Bad Cop @ The End, 11/7/10

Posted on:

After a disappointing turnout the last time I was at the End, it seemed like a completely different venue for Sunday night’s Bad Cop show. Hipsters and a few people who really wanted to be hipsters crowded around the stage to see the dynamic performance of rock trio Bad Cop. The band was charismatic and high-energy as frontman Adam Moult played off guitarist Mikey Owen and drummer Michael Frazier throughout the show, and had the audience captivated with his Iggy Pop-like engagement of the crowd. They opened with “Sail Away,” and kept it heavy on the guitar and drums from then on.

Bad Cop’s frontman just looks like he’s going to be famous. I don’t know if it’s the Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) energy he gives off, or just that he has a stellar stage presence, but he’s got the charisma that belongs in rock music. His voice was malleable to each song they played, and was even enough that you could actually make out the lyrics.

The crowd was upbeat throughout the show and the sunglasses-clad drummer seemed to be having as much fun as they were as he played the band’s single, “Daylight”. This is the song where they sound strikingly similar to the aforementioned Strokes. The most notable difference is Bad Cop has a harder sound, while still keeping the danceable riffs and vocals.

Bad Cop has changed two of the three members in the past few weeks, leaving only the frontman the same. That made for a disappointingly short set of only six songs, during which the band meshed well, considering they had to adapt to each other’s styles so quickly.

I’m not saying I don’t appreciate a good singer-songwriter’s tear-fest or a new-age punk revival band, but there’s nothing that beats a good rock show. One where the musicians actually perform instead of just mimicking a bad music video on VH1. Bad Cop definitely delivers the former of the two extremes with a presence and energy like early Rolling Stones sans the heroin addictions. – Krystal Wallace

Kurt Vile “He’s Alright” Closes Out “Eastbound & Down” Season Finale!

Posted on:

Ha…thanks to R5’s tweet for turning us on to Kurt Vile’s track “He’s Alright” closing out the finale for Season 2 of “Eastbound & Down”. Unfortunately, we are poor so such luxuries are not always at our fingertips and some of us just steal cable, but HBO is definitely not one of the channels that we get. Sorry, if you still haven’t had a chance to watch this from your DVR recording (you rich bastards – just kidding) and this ruins the ending for you, just look away and mute the first few seconds. – The Deli Staff

Grandfather plays Union Pool on 11.20

Posted on:

Having grown tired of hearing everyone and anyone with access to a home digital "recording studio" pump out often lifeless collections of songs, this past July the three members of Grandfather sold off all of their home recording equipment and headed to Chicago to make their album "Why I’d Try" – with the help of wizard of analog recording himself, engineer Steve Albini. The band, that plays an intense brand of (non-instrumental) post-rock that often escalates to post-punk peaks, is offering a free digital download of the product of this collaboration here. Check them out live at Union Pool on 11.20. – Read an in depth review of their CD on Dave Cromwell’s blog.

Warpaint’s debut LP + tour

Posted on:

warpaint

After much anticipation from their previous EP, "Exquisite Corpse", Warpaint recently released their debut album "The Fool". Their enchanting, psychedelic rock is hypnotizing with a dreamy, under the sea type sound. "The Fool" is a 9 track LP with each song ranging in length from 4-7 minutes. The foursome is currently on tour in Europe, but will be playing at The Troubadour on the 12th of December. After that, the lovely ladies are off to Australia for the Laneway Festival until February, so this is a show not to miss!
