The Vita Ruins @ the Red Palace 11/13

Posted on:

This Saturday, DC’s experimental indie rockers, the Vita Ruins, return to their hometown (at the Red Palace,) after a couple months of shows up and down the east coast.  Their first LP, A Day Without A Name, (released in March), is hands down one of the best albums of the year, so expect to be shaken to your knees with gorgeous tracks like "Coffin Dodgers" and "I Was Hoping That Our Stardust Was In Someway Connected." Recently, they’ve let loose a demo of a new tune to be featured on their upcoming EP to be released in early 2011.  Super excited over here! (photo credit Colleen Vivori)

Psych-Folk lovers may want to Dylan Trees tonight at Molly Malones. The band released The Charlie Horse EP in late 2008, opened for Echo and The Bunnymen at SXSW 2009, and In 2010, they were invited to contribute to Beat LA, a charity compilation of covers that will include contributions from No Age and Crystal Antlers. Dylan Trees offered up a glacial reworking of Kathy Smith’s Topanga. The upcoming full length release Victoryville is due for release later this year. On the bill also out of towners Kris Gruen, Captain Danger and Son Ark & Coyote.

Pissed Jeans to Perform at Andy Kotowicz’s Family Foundation Benefit

Posted on:

According to Pitchfork, Pissed Jeans will be performing at the benefit for the family (wife and baby daughter) of tragically fallen former Sub Pop Records VP Andy Kotowicz, who was in a fatal car accident on Oct. 24, 2010. The event will be on Dec. 4 at The Showbox in Seattle, and will also feature performances by Mudhoney, Shabazz Palaces, Wolf Eyes, Vetiver, Fruit Bats, A-Frames/AFCGT, and Michael Yonkers. If you’d like to make a direct donation to the Andy Kotowicz’s Family Foundation, please do so here. As you may or may not know, Kotowicz played an integral part in bringing Pissed Jeans into the Sub Pop family so this will certainly be an emotional performance for them. We wish comfort to all for their loss. – The Deli Staff

The Tribal Cafe tomorrow night!

Posted on:

If you’re into old, vintage 60’s type music like I am, then I suggest going out to The Tribal Cafe Friday for a night filled with eclectic bands and singer/songwriters. The night will start out with acoustic sets by LA-based Amy Blaschke and the lovely Christina Antipa, who is from Northern California. Following will be a quirky trio called The Corespondents, who is said to be ruling the underground scene of Seattle. The highlights of the night should be the soulful rock jams of San Francisco ensemble The Soft White Sixties, contrasted by the soft, romantic folk sounds of our very own Silver Phial. This will be a night filled with diversity, fun, and good tunes. So come out to Echo Park tomorrow night and get weird.

The Black Cab Sessions Pickup Grandchildren and Reading Rainbow!

Posted on:

Well, it looks like Philly artists are experiencing a bit of a British Invasion this week. The Black Cab Sessions is an interesting video series definitely worth checking out where you get to see some of your favorite artists stuff themselves in the back of the mobile studio and pull off a tune through the bumpy streets of the city, which is usually London. Looks like they wrapped-up their session with Reading Rainbow yesterday before the couple headed out on tour, and are currently in NYC/Brooklyn recording Grandchildren before our much beloved West Philly crew performs at ultra-cool Brooklyn DIY space Glasslands Gallery for the first installment of a monthly showcase by Tell All Your Friends PR. – The Deli Staff

Update: The Black Cab Sessions also picked up Spank Rock, Plastic Little and Strand of Oaks w/Chris Ward from Pattern Is Movement.

Get your dance fix this weekend w/ CALVERTRON & MAYHEM

Posted on:

For those of you who haven’t noticed, Nashville doesn’t have a massive dubstep/DnB/house music scene, BUT for the few artists and DJ’s who are involved in it, they are top notch and high quality. This Friday at Mercy Lounge is going to be a kickass show featuring DJ’s CALVERTRON from the UK and MAYHEM (Atlanta), with  local openers DJ Wick-iT, G-lux, TX300, JusJoshua, and Eric MasQ. I’m most excited about DJ Wick-iT because he’ll be layin’ down the DUUUUBBB portion of the night, but this is going to be a spectacle. Just watch the promo video, and go here to check out more details. Shows like this don’t happen in Nashville too often, and if you’re not familiar with house, jungle, DrumsnBass, or dubstep, you should begin your familiarization by stopping by Mercy Lounge on Friday night. Check here for more details.–Deli Staff

New NYC residents: The Young Friends – Live at Glasslands on 11.11

Posted on:

The Young Friends – the rock group with the second most generic name ever after "The The" – ise a fun party band that recently relocated from Phoenex to Brooklyn. So far the Big Apple treated them well: they played this year’s NYC PopFest, and got blogged by Brooklyn Vegan like… 2 hours after they moved here  (something that will surely irritate many long time NY based artists).
Their story actually bears surprising similarities with the one of NYC’s own beach boys The Drums, a band that’s been very supportive with them (Holiday Records, run in part by Jacob of The Drums, released YF’s first single) and with whom they seem to have a lot in common also on a musical level: fast paced, bouncy rhythms + ultra catchy melodies + sparse, simple arrangements + preference for clean guitar tones + alto male vocals. The Young Friends are actually very young (the core duo is 17 years old) and surely talented, and they have plenty of time to work on their sound in a more personal direction – before they’ll have to change the band name… I mean, I don’t think anybody over 25 would wanto to play in a band with that name, right? The band will play Glasslands tonight with Warm Ghost and Grand Children.

‘tine-‘tine Is Back at JR’s Nov. 11

Posted on:

Philly’s lo-fi queen of mean is back on the scene. Nah, we know that Christine Griffis is an absolute sweetheart, but her stage persona ‘tine-‘tine will cut any bitch that crosses her and make ex-lovers rue the day they hit that shit with a drop of a verse! She’ll be takin’ some time off from, in her own words, “dick suckin’, grad schoolin’, full-time-workin’, ‘tine-‘tinein’…mostly dick suckin’ though” to grace the stage at JR’s. Well, I guess that you really can’t call it a stage because there is no physical stage. How about that designated carpeted area in the corner where bands go to rock balls!?! But tonight you’ll be gettin’ down to some old school beats and plenty of laughs. Hopefully the potty-mouthed Northeaster wrote some new tunes for us over the summer in between fellatios. Also, if you plan on making the trip into deep South Philly, make sure to catch Negative Department. Admittedly, I haven’t seen them perform live yet, but I’m lovin’ tracks like “Throw a Rock, Hit an Artist” and “Dark and Stormy”. JR’s, 2327 S. Croskey St., 9pm, $5, 21+ – Q.D. Tran
