The Deli SF’s Weekend Highlights For 10/14-10/17

Posted on:

While surely most people will be spending their weekend over on Treasure Island at the festival of the same name, for those without the finances to acquire tickets or were denied credentials (as apparently was the case with the Deli, sigh) here are a few show selections from the calender.

On Thursday the Phantom Kicks will be bringing their soothing brand of electronic-rock to Club Waziema with Doubledouble, 9pm.

Offering up competition in the same area, The Actors will be putting on a free show at Milk with Spiro Agnew and Portland’s Vanimal, 8pm.

Friday night head out to the Rickshaw for a Popscene Presents show with My First Earthquake, Blood Red Shoes, and Sky Larking, 8:30pm.

Spend Saturday having your mind blown at the psychedelic festival Frisco Freakout. In it’s third year, this weekend’s line-up boasts heavy-hitters Wooden Shjips with Young Prisms, Sic Alps, Howling Rain, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, Greg Ashley, Carlton Melton, White Manna, Glitter Wizard, Strangers Family Band, Jeffertitti’s Nile, and Mass at Dawn. Doors at 1:30pm.

Finally, close out your weekend with Rank/Xerox at the Hemlock with the Fleshies and Toys That Kill, 9pm.

Otherwise, if you’re headed to Treasure Island, enjoy!

Where Is My Mind?: Dangerous Ponies’ Chrissy Tashijan

Posted on:

When you listen to South Philly’s Dangerous Ponies, it’s a splendid, joyous experience. Their sunbeamy brand of ‘60s pop-infused, gang vocals adorin’ circus masquerade rock is the type that morphs you into a high-octane gale on the dancefloor. And the vibrant collective – consisting of frontwoman Chrissy Tashijan (vox/guitar), her brother Mikey (drums), Evan Bernard (vox/guitar), Chris Baglivo (vox/bass), Kyle Pulley (guitar) and hype-women Sarah Green (keyboard/vox) and Brooks Banker (vox/tambourine)—only intensifies their music on stage, making it hard for your body to resist their high-energy prowess.

With an EP already under their belt, last year’s Dr. Ponie Medicine Ponie, the 7-piece troupe will release their first self-titled full-length on hometown label mainstay Punk Rock Payroll. To support its release, the Ponies will trek across the country for a 25-city tour over the course of October and November, kicking off the ride this Friday, October 15 at Philly AIDS Thrift for their official CD Release Party (they’ll also be doing a run with label mates The Extraordinaires from November 7 – 14). We recently caught up with Chrissy to talk shop about the new record, the Ponies’ colorful personality, and what it means to be a queer-identified troupe in Philly. You can check out the interview here.

He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister’s self titled EP out

Posted on:

He's My Brother, She's My Sister

Sultry vocals, twanging folk guitar, booming bass drum, plucked cello, and the pitter patter of tap shoes. What does it all add up to? The vaudeville folk of He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister. The gang recently played a packed show at the Bootleg Theater for the release of their self titled EP and as the send off for their US tour. Appearances from friends Featherbeard, Amanda Jo Williams, Adanowsky, and Las Cafeteras rounded out the night with stellar performances from all.

If you’ve never been exposed to He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, I think it’s a fair warning so say their mojo have the power to heal the afflicted. "Tales That I Tell" has vocalist Rachel Kolar paint the laments of a lover done wrong in all of her dusty western glory, while Lauren Brown taps out the beat. Rachel’s brother, guitarist Rob Kolar picks up the vocal duties on "How’m I Gunna Get Back Home" with cellist Satya Bhabha filling in the breaks. "Lazy Daze" fits somewhere nicely in the crack between 60’s folk and 70’s psychedelics while "Moonage Daydream" continues the down tempo theme with a hint of David Bowie’s "Space Oddity". Haunting falsetto and acoustic guitar ring through regret on "The House That Isn’t Mine". "Coattails" picks the pace up again with a little ditty about those people who just can’t seem to achieve anything for themselves. "Wilted Rose" closes up shop with a simple, lo-fi chorus about a worthless girl’s quest for love.

The group will be on tour for a while, but you can grab their EP on Bandcamp.

R.I.P. Solomon Burke – The King of Rock & Soul

Posted on:

Philly’s King of Rock & Soul, Solomon Burke, passed away of natural causes yesterday after arriving at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam for a sold out show at The Paradiso. He was 70 years old. Burke was responsible for many 1960’s classics including "Cry to Me" (later featured in the movie Dirty Dancing), "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" (one of our all-time favorites from The Blues Brothers), and "You Can Make It If You Try". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and has influenced a number of rock ‘n’ roll legends like The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, who recorded his songs. Burke had released an album in April called Nothing’s Impossible, and his last album Hold On Tight is scheduled for release later this month. Below is a video from his performance on the U.K.’s Top of the Pops in 2003 of "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love". Enjoy.  – The Deli Staff

Spotlight: Otis Grove’s “The Runk” (CD Release 10/15 @ Lizard Lounge)

Posted on:

What do you get when you start with funk-soul grooves, throw in some jazz stylings, add jam band sensibilities, layer on the heavy guitar and organ riffage, and finish it off with prog-rock wackiness? Oh yeah… and remove the vocals for an all-instrumental delivery. Given that mish-mash I would have guessed you’d get a train wreck. Thank God my guess would have been wrong. Otis Grove’s newest release, The Runk, is an instant classic.

The Runk opens with “Monark” and a dual barrage of guitar and organ straight out of the Deep Purple songbook. About a minute in, it takes a hard left turn into Emerson, Lake and Palmer territory with a crazy time signature shift and a Keith Emerson-style key solo. Then the tune suddenly comes back together with a meandering Santana-esque guitar solo before swinging back to the Deep Purple riffs to end the song. That’s a lot of ground covered in a single track and I knew I was in for a treat.

The next two tracks, “The Bunk” and “Basket Case," stick to a more traditional funk/jazz style, reminiscent of Fishbone mixed with Medeski, Martin and Wood. Both songs pay homage to a retro-soul sound while remaining thoroughly modern in their delivery. The album continues on this cycle through seven more tracks, alternating between heavy jam band rock-influenced tracks and classic funk/soul/jazz.

Late in the album, “I Won’t Forget” brings me back to my youth in the ’70s. During my summers in New Hampshire I would frequently go roller skating at an old rink on Lake Winnipesaukee. Instead of playing Top 40 hits they instead had reel-to-reel tapes of old organ music, like some ancient form of Muzak. Listening to the keys on “I Won’t Forget” suddenly turned me into a 10 year-old klutz, circling the rink and trying desperately to look cool in a velour shirt and homemade plaid pants.

The Runk closes with “Fausto." The track highlights their drumming chops, opening with a short drum solo. Those drums remain the driving feature of the six and a half minute track and end this amazing album on a simmering groove.
